Bingo. You'd think I would have checked that already but for some reason I'd just assumed that my new plates were clean as I've never had problems with my agar process previously.
9 out of 10 plates that were made at the same time but not inoculated are showing the mold.
So it's my plate making process that is suspect. I do no pour plates and can only think I didn't sterilise long enough as they were never opened after sterilising.
May also want to see how well the lids fit, after a while they can not fit so snug, I have had that be an issue.

Wouldn't be a sterilizing issue molds are killed very easily I would look at your filters

I have a variety of different no pour containers, some with filters, others are sterilised with loose screw-top lids and then tightened.

Molds die off at around 140 so even pasturizing kills them.

Thanks for that info. All I can try is another batch of plates I guess and maybe ensure they are cooled in a clean place.

What exactly are you seeing? Is it only mold, no bacteria, and all the same kind of mold? Are there little trails like something crawled over it? Mold colonies are usually caused by dust particles from the air. It's kind of strange you'd be getting it in different kinds of unopened dishes.

Random spots of dark color, no trails. All the same kind. I'm totally puzzled by it.

If they need to cool in clean places, something's wrong, because cool places are not clean (without equipment/FH/etc.) and you probably intend to store the plates normally anyway, right?
Since the problem occurs post-PC, it's either in the procedure or in the containers. You said you use a variety of containers, so it's probably procedure. Do you: wrap plates in foil for PC? Do anything to the plates after PC, except tightening caps before taking them out of the PC (and before removing the foil)?

I don’t wrap plates in foil and as you mention, only tighten lids if they are screw top.
Here’s a photo, the 2 plates on the right are not inoculated and haven’t been opened since PC’ing.

That's fucked up.
And it worked before.
Could those containers be losing their integrity? It's hard to inadequately sterilize agar.

Yeah, can't blame it solely on the filters because you also have screwtops. Unless there is an integrity problem with the screwtop containers, the contam seems to have happened inside the PC, right? After that, they are airtight?
Theory: as the PC was cooling off (steam condensing=negative pressure), it sucked in spore-laden air through the valve. The filters didn't work (b/c bad? wet?); the loosened lids didn't provide enough of a barrier.
So why not wrap half the containers snugly in foil and see if it makes a difference? (Tighten lids before removing the foil. Dry filters in the SAB, removing foil once in the SAB.)

Or just wrap your lids with micropore tape...or get different dishes

I’ve never been closer to investing in a laminar flow hood and doing pour agar.

You can pour petris easily and reliably in a SAB while you sort out your FH. Gonna go to the hardware store tomorrow and pick up wood and wiring for my 2x4 build. First I'm gonna pour some petris for breakfast.
