ID REQUEST (amanita muscaria?)
    #26336353 - 11/21/19 04:33 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

I picked Amanita Muscaria the other day and had 4 positive ID's https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26327656

I went back to the same location today and picked three more caps. I am hoping to get a few more positive ID's to be sure that what I have here is indeed Amanita Muscaria.

As far as I know, up here, in the Pacific Northwest, which I see from your last post you are also from, there are no lookalike species for red Amanita muscaria - you see a red Amanita, you've got A. muscaria. I've seen a photo of a red Russula masquerading as one... but it was a bad pic of a badly smashed mushroom - under close examination it should be difficult to mistake the two..... There are a few closely related species which can be yellow or orange, but most of those are still going to be A. muscaria.

The only ones you really need to be particularly careful about are yellow and white- if you see a yellow-ish  (usually more of a yellowy-green or tawny shade than bright yellow) one with no warts and are wondering - gee is that a muscaria - beware it could possibly be Amanita phalloides which is deadly poison, but they really do look quite different - they have a sac type volva and no warts -  and are an uncommon introduced species here. White Amanita muscaria are, from my experience pretty rare - You should be able to ID them and tell them apart Fromm poisonous Amanita species with a good examination, but IMHO why bother messing about with them, when there are usually plenty around that have colored caps.

Disclaimer - I'm just a hobbyist and cannot absolutely guarantee any ID offered. I'm most familiar with the species found in the Pacific Northwest - those found in other parts of the world may vary considerably, so always do your own research to find out what grows in your area and what lookalikes you need to be aware of. Understand that many mushroom species cannot be 100% reliably identified by photographs alone, even by an expert, so it may not be possible to go beyond suggesting a probable genus.
