South Florida Small stringy red mushroom...turning blue?
    #26336189 - 11/21/19 03:26 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

These were found in a wooded area, highly undisturbed. They were found growing under pine trees and their decaying needles, possibly from wood as well.

They are small, thin, stringy stemmed red mushrooms - gilled, and held up fine when in a plastic baggie.

Upon taking them out the next day, as well as shrinking over the days time, they turned blue upon the entirety of their stems, as well as along the outer ring, if you will, of the caps.

Not active.

Looks to be a Marasmius sp.

:whathesaid:

They very much look like they are in the Marasmius plicatulus complex of species.

They do not appear to be bluing to me.... they are just darkening to a deeper maroon as they dry out.

Disclaimer - I'm just a hobbyist and cannot absolutely guarantee any ID offered. I'm most familiar with the species found in the Pacific Northwest - those found in other parts of the world may vary considerably, so always do your own research to find out what grows in your area and what lookalikes you need to be aware of. Understand that many mushroom species cannot be 100% reliably identified by photographs alone, even by an expert, so it may not be possible to go beyond suggesting a probable genus.
