Yeast ok to spawn?
    #26335612 - 11/21/19 10:18 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

I've found some threads here that seem to confirm that what I have is yeast - little pinkish pinprick dots on the grain that don't seem to stop the mycelium from growing...

If the jars fully colonize over the yeast (which so far seems likely) is it ok to spawn? Is there any danger to trying?

I know some moulds can be nasty, so I want to make sure I'm not doing something risky!

Sometimes yeast really hampers growth and creates conditions for other contaminates to flourish (it'll raise temps in your jar, for sure), and sometimes the myceliium does ok...  If you are dead-set on spawning, make damn sure you do so in a completely separate area that you know damn well won't becmoe interactive with your primary grow area.  IME yeast-infected jars get put in the garden to continue life outside (and they almost always produce a small flush outside, as with any other contaminated jars...).  Yeast produces alcohol as a byproduct, so it's not friendly in a variety of ways.  If you must, separate it now, and see how the mycelium does in competition.  You'll see soon enough rather you're fighting a losing battle or not.  Update this and keep us posted, but do not risk your other projects by fiddling with that in the same area.  Best of luck.

I'd trash those and start over. Especially the second one with the black specks.

The black specs are coffee (which Ive found actually slows it down!)

I might toss it and start over as suggested

Thanks!

I had a bunch of those white specs in some grain of mine and spawned it. I got a few ounces out of it. Just see how it finishes colonizing and spawn it and start fresh again. I don’t think it would hurt anything unless it got noticeably nasty, or if you are worried about space or extra supplies, then trash it. my :twocents:
