What are your favorite sets, eras, and models?
Do you still have all your LEGOs from childhood?
I just got a small set to occupy some down time between clients on slow days, and holy shit do I miss these from childhood. Get high and build shit! Share your LEGO legacy, Shroomery!

Nah I haven't touched a lego in like 2 decades. I enjoyed them a lot as a kid though.
There's too much emphasis on sets though that tell you what to build and it's themed so there's really no imagination to it at all anymore.
Just read the instructions and follow them.
I can get the exact same feeling and process out of buying a couch from Ikea and building it at home. At least then I'd have a couch.
Lego's are dope though for sure. What a simple and great idea to get filthy fucking rich.

Dude I totally agree and that's why I'm only into the LEGO CLASSIC line, which is just a big box of random colored blocks, and you just go. No set models, just free-jazz LEGO building! It's the only way. I should have mentioned that in my opening post lol.

Get high and build shit!

Some of the stuff they build is truly remarkable from the little blocks. Oh I forgot to add the punchline to that couch analogy; The fucked up thing is, the couch and the lego set cost about the same price.

I know, people build some crazy shit. I was huge into KNEX as a kid in the 90's, as well. I had the roller coaster LOL. I had way more of those than LEGOs.

Ye I remember knex as well. Used to be all sorts of different building materials back then. Little similar and slightly similar pieces that could be assembled into something different were very popular in the 90's it seems.
One of the most badass toys were Transformers though. Fuck I used to have one that was so complicated like 20-30$ badass one that I lost the directions on how to change him into his other form that he just stayed half assembled for the rest of his days

I always wished I kept my Legos from when I was a kid. I had a ton. My son loves them though, we've bought him 3-4 boxes of those just random pieces. He builds all kinds of shit but every now and then I step on the legos and that's just no beuno

I have a five year old son. I build LEGO every. single. day.
We get him sets, he likes LEGO City the most, but we also get him boxes of just hundreds of assorted LEGO to encourage creative play. He comes up with some really interesting shit.
Years before he was born, when my fiancee’s older son was like 7, I gave him all my old LEGO shit from the early 90s and late 80s. Back then sets were simpler, and I was into the pirate sets and castles as a kid. I could probably rebuild some of that stuff with the pieces we still have. A few years ago I rebuilt the witch’s castle, it was cool.

That set in mint condition is probably worth an early 90's used Honda Civic

That’s a cool set. Love the giant tiki head thing.
One thing about LEGO sets- they’ve gotten flashier and more “real” looking, but they’ve also gotten easier to build. I think I posted about this within the past couple years. 25+ years ago, the instructions were like a little scavenger hunt. You had to examine each diagram and carefully determine what had been added, and where. These days, sets have a little inset drawing on each page that shows exactly what pieces are added in that step. It makes building it easier, removes some of the frustration of having skipped a piece only to find out about it later and having to backtrack, but it also diminishes the feeling of accomplishment you’d get when you’d finish a whole set accurately. I like the new style instructions for my son at age 5, it really helps him, but I think the old style would be better when he gets older. Maybe when he’s like 9 I can sharpie out the little inset on each page, lol. “BUILD AS I DID, CHILD!” I’ll exclaim as he whines over his now much more frustrating LEGO set.

I completely understand what you're saying and I agree. It's like the only thing they don't do now with models and video games is put it together/play it for you, lol.
Remember trying to build models you didn't have...by picture from magazines and shit? Old school bootLEGOing!!!

Or you can do what my dad did and moved me up to those model car sets and stuff that you use super glue and shit to put together. Damn I actually forgot about those. I spent a lot of time doing those when I was younger. Good times.

Totally did "real" models, as well. I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the ease of pick up and go/finish with LEGO and KNEX, though.

Oh ya they're completely different vibes for sure. I don't recall really playing with toys that much after like 9-10 years old though. I was always more interested in pc gaming. Thinking back I don't really recall having a lot of "toys" or any really by the time I was in like 5th 6th grade.

Ye I grew up in the valley of Alaska and had dirtbikes and a 4 wheeler. You could just ride them wherever out there so it was like having a car at that age. That was before everyone cared a ton as well so I'd regularly ride the 5-10 miles to my best friends house for the day and shit. No cell phone or anything lol. Then we'd all ride off and build forts in the woods and shit lol. Good times.

Nice dude I've always wanted to visit Alaska! I grew up outside of Boston, throughout the entirety of the 90's. The only rule was "come home when the street lights come on". Those days were absolutely MAGIC. Those are the closest to a natural high/enthrallment outside of psychs for me.

I had LEGOs, that and I think it was Erector Sets or some sort of knock off of them with the wrenches and all that. I made a dragster. The best ones I had were, the lego airport and then a dirtbike which kicked massive amounts of ass. The one that got away was the space ship, I wanted that space ship but never got it..
I was going to post photos but it looks like they’ve changed. They don’t look like how I remember them..
This is the dirt bike I had, the pistons in the engine moved etc.. pretty epic.

This is cool, I forgot about Technic..

I really like the Technic stuff as well. Would like to get more of those sorts of pieces. On the Lego site you can order individual parts. Some are an alright deal.
I have a bunch of Lego from my childhood and my kid has a bunch too. Snagged some cool sets from thrift stores as well. The biggest one was a ship from Last Airbender.

This just blew my mind, because I just checked it out. Everything so far is like, 0.15 a piece, which is really cool! That's so damn convenient if you come up with an idea and know what you'd need! LEGO is winning back my heart, three decades later.

I believe we still have a box of legos. It was mostly odd's and ends from the early days. I had a fire fighter boat and maybe an airport. The bulk I have no idea what it came from. I think the early days you could just buy bulk lego parts. They didn't have the sets as much.
I also had a battery and some lights, I do remember that.
Lego's and sandbox was 'my thing'.

Since thinking about LEGOs now I feel like I remember reading about how bootleg LEGOs are a real big problem, like lego sets a record for one of the most counterfeit things out there. There’s something else about them too... I feel like I read an ‘Interesting thing about legos’ coffee table book somewhere in my past.
Is this ringing a bell with anyone else?

IIRC their patent ran out so bootleg Legos is just kind of a thing. You can buy knockoffs for a fraction of the price that are identical . I buy the actual Lego anyway though

Maybe that’s it.. there’s something going on with them that I can’t quite remember.
As far as a gig goes that’s got to be awesome because there’s only so many forms of the blocks so you could slam out a ton for cheap and if I remember correctly the kits sell for pretty high dollar. I should start my own lego company and make more specialized kits.. I can’t think of what yet, a giant shroom or something.

IME any Lego knockoff type stuff like Mega Blox is just nowhere near the level of quality. If bootleggers can make a convincing fake then more power to them.

Yeah that doesn’t surprise me, they bootleg everything over there. Every now and then you can find a counterfeit that’s better than the original but more often than not it’s wack..

Yah no this is like knock off legos not shitty ass mega blocks. You can get like knock offs of rare kits and figurines I just checked they have the Bugatti up there for $160 ( the legit one I think is like close to $500).
You just have to know what to look for.

I bet you could even get it cheaper that's just the first one that came up. Plus u can haggle with these people most times. Just dont complain to me when all the pieces dont show up. Complain to them.

If the pieces really are indistinguishable then they have made a product that is as good as the real thing I guess. Collectibility of mass produced items is kind of a bullshit thing to begin with.

Theres some actually rare legos go for semi big money. Usually like yah this was a mistake back in the 70s so it's rare af or like they only made 100 of these for some obscure toy convention and they're super dank kinda stuff. I mean u can get them knocked off from china but they're not like worth anything except ppl come over and go omg u have this stupid really cool rare lego thing and you go yah. Then smart ppl will be like so u bought it from china? And you go yah.

Lincoln logs were the shit. They were expencive tho. For alot of years we just played with an oatmeal canister filled with left over popsicle sticks. You could make alot cooler designs with the popsicle sticks honestly. But I guess now u can order like 10000 piece Lincoln log set from china for like $100 so whatever

LEGO being counterfit makes tons of sense. Even on Amazon there are off-brand sets. It's kind of crazy that people actually buy them TBH. To each their own.
I just found my massive tote FULL of K'NEX. Like, thousands of pieces, lol.

Yeah I'm honestly surprised that rubber tubing has held up since Christmas '96, lol. I think the entire roller coaster's worth of tubing is right there. I misplaced the plans for that one, but I know you can download them online somewhere. That thing was legit 8 feet long; it took up our entire finished basement living room at the time!

KNEX always felt more architecturally accurate, even as a kid. You could essentially build frames for things. LEGOs were a task for larger, more functional models. Both were great in their own ways, but I definitely had more KNEX than LEGO back in the day.

Yup, all of those are classic early/mid 90's kits! I had a couple of those pictured . I had a buddy whom always had new LEGO, his parents were also into it so we always felt he was super duper lucky.
I'll admit even just fooling with this small set (I put together all three models in 5 minutes), I'm already addicted to the feeling of snapping pieces into place and completing models. LEGO knows what they're doing.

My little brother and I made a game out of LEGOs. We each made a car with a person inside, then sat about 6 feet apart and 1,2,3 LAUNCHED them violently at each other. We did this over and over until one person's vehicle was shattered enough that their LEGO man came out of the cockpit.
Rules were something like:
1. Vehicle has to be able to roll. (needs wheels) 2. A full LEGO man must fit inside. 3. You are not allowed to put any pieces back on. 4. If the wheels come off, it is up to the other person if they allow them to repair and continue.
It actually got super competitive where essentially we ended up with giant 3+ lb wheeled battering ram monstrosities, braced along the entire vehicle, made out of the thin lego parts for strength.
It wasn't unusual to have a champion that lasted for a week or two while the other person kept having to go back to the drawing board and figuring out better bracing or a better ram cross-section.
I forgot about that until now. That was so much fun!

Really nice LEGO sets there, 1234go. Especially liking the pirate ship and the castle. I had a big ship once, but I think it wasn’t pirates. Tbh, I believe it was a British imperial ship. LEGO colonizers, lol.
They’ve released a lego time travel DeLorean set, based on the one in Back to the Future. I hella want that one, but I don’t want to spend 200$ on a lego set just to build it and then have my son dismantle it in a day and lose the parts. He’s five and won’t understand that something like that gets built and then just sits around, looking cool. There are also LEGO versions of the Tron motorcycles that I want for similar reasons as the DeLorean. It’s tough to explain to a little kid that my toys are not playthings, though.

Was it this one by chance?

Having a lego DeLorean would be a pretty cool display piece. but I hear you on the child situation. He'd be bugging you all day, and promising he'll be careful...and then break it within 5 minutes. I'm still sour about my nephew breaking my xenomorph's head off...he had to pull on that shit, it wasn't a fragile toy....little shithead.
There have been quite a few lego releases that I've wanted to buy as an adult (lord of the rings), but just couldn't justify spending the money. The last one I got was a mini LOTR set...lol. It's in the attic with the rest of the legos now.

Yep, I can do it for hours....very addicting, and hard to put down. A friend of mine has two large Star Wars sets...tie fighter, and millennium falcon I think. But they're still sealed, and he just displays the boxes...it bothers the hell outta me.
I do get to build some of the sets my nephew gets. So that's cool...

Dude some of those classic Star Wars model sets go for $600-$800! I remember my buddy having the Millennium Falcon back in the day. Amazing model.

Right? There are collectors, then there are collectors. My buddy and I were just talking about this. We both prefer to purchase old games and actually play them, and have the collecting aspect be a secondary nostalgia thing. We own it, but we use it primarily. That's how we derive joy from it. Others need to have it on the shelf...forever. Doesn't make sense to me, but to each their own!

From the last Lego thread (https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/25729888/fpart/1/vc/1):
Quote:
psi said: I have done a few Lego City sets with my kid, most recently the Forest Tractor one. Also a car with a camper trailer and an airplane. And a couple bins of bulk pieces from Walmart in the mix.
I had some cool sets as a kid. A Lego Castle set in the 80s, and in the 90s a train set with an electrified rail and and early Mindstorms robot set. Would like to find that stuff again in my parents' garage and/or get a more recent Mindstorms set. Also just some Technic style pieces in general, extra beams and connectors and gears etc. The forest Tractor set had a few special pieces like that.
Had a friend as a kid who was homeschooled and was way into the pirate and castle sets. He has a medieval history PhD now I think. His parents were both teachers already before the homeschooling so I guess they knew what they were doing.
Quote:
psi said: I found some pretty cool Lego at the thrift store this week. At least 5 different sets mixed together. The biggest one is the Fire Nation ship from Last Airbender. It's huge, a foot and a half long. Lego has the instructions on their site but unfortunately the scans are not great and it's hard to see what's going on with any black bricks.
Quote:
psi said: I got another score from Value Village last week that I thought I posted about, but I guess not.

The Lego Mindstorms set I got as a Christmas gift one year as a teenager turned up in my parents garage so I picked that up last weekend. The infrared thing to program it is missing though.

Also found a couple important bits from the train set I had. But not the tracks.

I think I'm more bothered by the fact that he thinks a lego set is going to be of any value any time soon. Collect the figurines, posters, light sabers, etc...but fuckin' Legos??!! Come on, bro...those are gonna be produced for a long time to come. Cut your losses, and let's build that damn tie fighter. I'm gonna give him a hard time about it again when I see him this friday...lol.
Agreed on the old games....gotta play those. Unless I had something like the original legend of zelda still sealed....I don't think I could open that.

Did you guys have a local Toys R Us that had those big displays that were behind ‘glass’ of all the different LEGO kits they had?
I was just thinking that would be a pretty cool day at work building those for the store display.

I mean it's a pretty lame thing to do with a gift if the person hoped you would build it. But I don't think it's all that farfetched that they could appreciate in value. If you buy it planning to keep it new in box for the long haul and hopefully really cash in, then I can see wanting to see that through.
The Last Airbender ship I posted can fetch a couple hundred bucks even opened. Of course the bulk of it is generic dark grey bricks, but there are pieces that are found in maybe one other set, or no other sets, and are no longer made.
This set was in the same thrift store haul with the ship. There are some pieces in there that were only made for that set.

I'm being facetious for the most part, man. I honestly couldn't care less about what he does with them. I will say, though, that I think it's more a matter of him just not caring enough to build them. And the box itself is open, but the little lego bags are all sealed. He's mentioned once that "it'll take too long" after asking him if he's gonna build it. Sure they'll be of some value, but that's pretty much the extent of his collection...aside from some of those bobble head figurines. So, it's not like he's got much collecting in mind. He doesn't appreciate the LEGOS!!

Guys what's the next step tho. How can we bring in new concepts and technology into things like legos or Lincoln logs. How to we bring it to the new generation. These things are stimulating in so many ways but haven't really changed in a significant way since thier conception decades ago. Let's start tossing it around brainstorming. What's the hot new shit so we can either undercut lego or sell out to them. Maybe were designing and printing our own components now, maybe were using new composites and materials to push the envelope further with what can be done, maybe were going for more intricate automation or paying more attention to artistic aesthetics and facilitating an artist's palette to serve the creatively engaged mind. Theres definitely something there that brings it to the next level. I'm not sure what that something is yet but it's there. Look at how excited people in this thread are about stupid ass plastic bricks. Imagine the money. Unbelievable.

Go, I figured it out. I saw that imperial ship you posted and knew that wasn’t it. The large ship I had was, in fact, a pirate ship called the “Black Sea Barracuda”. A smaller ship I had was a RMS type called the “Carribean Clipper”, and in my mind I kinda melded the two. That imperial ship looks dope though.
Your friend is being ridiculous. Open those fuckin legos already.

Yes. Back in my day, you had to get a paper tag for the game you wanted, and find an employee to unlock the glass and get you a copy! Did you guys have K-B Toys, or was that just a New England thing? I remember them selling NES stuff, new, in box, all the way up until about 1998 lol.

The KB Toys where I was at were always in big malls, they were never stand alone stores. The thing was that they were always more expensive so if you found something there you go and get it from Toys R Us. I don’t know how accurate my memories are but I feel like they carried video game stuff you couldn’t get other places.

Correct. We had standalone stores in MA, though. I don't remember prices being much different, and honestly thought KB would be cheaper. They did have a better selection of games. KB felt like a store, whereas ToysRUs was essentially a warehouse.

Chances are the KB’s I went to were more expensive just because they were in those big mall settings. Everything seems marked up in those malls, so a stand alone could very well be even or cheaper.

Most likely. Remember when EB was actually Electronics Boutique? They were always more pricey for the reason you mention above. Babbages was another. Nothing will ever top FuncoLand for games, though. EVER.

A smaller ship I had was a RMS type called the “Carribean Clipper”, and in my mind I kinda melded the two. That imperial ship looks dope though.
Your friend is being ridiculous. Open those fuckin legos already.
Oh, okay...I looked that black sea barracuda up, and it looks very familiar. Now I can't remember which pirate ship my brother had, lol...but I think his had black sails. That clipper ship looks pretty rad, too...and this thread is really makin' me wanna go throw away some money.
...and thank you for sympathizing with me about my heedless, and negligent friend, and his failure to even lego. what a stick in the mud.

Instruments? Dumb. Buy some music. Even better, pirate it. You drive? Idiot! Get an Ub3r. You play video games? That's what Twitch thots are for. Why do anything yourself? That's what capitalism is for. That's why, instead of watching shows or movies, I read reviews instead. Forming your own opinions is for poors and incels.

Oh yeah I forgot this one was a knockoff. I was joking that you should have got a real Bugatti instead of a Lego one.

I've been looking up tracked vehicles you can make with Lego stuff. There are videos of this thing on the imgur page.

Got my kid this for his birthday.

We have a bunch of different wheels and gears and stuff from other sets so it's fun swapping out the tracks for wheels and giving it higher gear ratios etc. I want to get more of the tank track related pieces though.

LEGO fire brigade & burning building/construction site. Never made a lego porta potty before, there’s a little toilet paper roll in there.
