KNEX always felt more architecturally accurate, even as a kid. You could essentially build frames for things. LEGOs were a task for larger, more functional models. Both were great in their own ways, but I definitely had more KNEX than LEGO back in the day.

Just got my LEGO package from Amazon! It came last night but was hiding out in the bushes, because the delivery driver is dense LOL.

I still have all of my legos, lol.  Brought them all out recently when my nephew was coming over a lot, and they're still just as fun to mess around with.
My brother, and I had all of these sets...plus a lot more.

Yup, all of those are classic early/mid 90's kits! I had a couple of those pictured . I had a buddy whom always had new LEGO, his parents were also into it so we always felt he was super duper lucky.

I'll admit even just fooling with this small set (I put together all three models in 5 minutes), I'm already addicted to the feeling of snapping pieces into place and completing models. LEGO knows what they're doing.

My little brother and I made a game out of LEGOs. We each made a car with a person inside, then sat about 6 feet apart and 1,2,3 LAUNCHED them violently at each other. We did this over and over until one person's vehicle was shattered enough that their LEGO man came out of the cockpit.

Rules were something like:

1. Vehicle has to be able to roll. (needs wheels)
2. A full LEGO man must fit inside.
3. You are not allowed to put any pieces back on.
4. If the wheels come off, it is up to the other person if they allow them to repair and continue.

It actually got super competitive where essentially we ended up with giant 3+ lb wheeled battering ram monstrosities, braced along the entire vehicle, made out of the thin lego parts for strength.

It wasn't unusual to have a champion that lasted for a week or two while the other person kept having to go back to the drawing board and figuring out better bracing or a better ram cross-section.

I forgot about that until now. That was so much fun!

Really nice LEGO sets there, 1234go.  Especially liking the pirate ship and the castle.  I had a big ship once, but I think it wasn’t pirates.  Tbh, I believe it was a British imperial ship.  LEGO colonizers, lol.

They’ve released a lego time travel DeLorean set, based on the one in Back to the Future.  I hella want that one, but I don’t want to spend 200$ on a lego set just to build it and then have my son dismantle it in a day and lose the parts.  He’s five and won’t understand that something like that gets built and then just sits around, looking cool.  There are also LEGO versions of the Tron motorcycles that I want for similar reasons as the DeLorean.  It’s tough to explain to a little kid that my toys are not playthings, though.

Was it this one by chance?

Having a lego DeLorean would be a pretty cool display piece. but I hear you on the child situation.  He'd be bugging you all day, and promising he'll be careful...and then break it within 5 minutes.  I'm still sour about my nephew breaking my xenomorph's head off...he had to pull on that shit, it wasn't a fragile toy....little shithead.

There have been quite a few lego releases that I've wanted to buy as an adult (lord of the rings), but just couldn't justify spending the money.  The last one I got was a mini LOTR set...lol.  It's in the attic with the rest of the legos now.

Yep, I can do it for hours....very addicting, and hard to put down.  A friend of mine has two large Star Wars sets...tie fighter, and millennium falcon I think. But they're still sealed, and he just displays the boxes...it bothers the hell outta me.

I do get to build some of the sets my nephew gets.  So that's cool...

Dude some of those classic Star Wars model sets go for $600-$800! I remember my buddy having the Millennium Falcon back in the day. Amazing model.

And I'd understand if he had the old classics.  I wouldn't open those either.....but he just has brand new Lego sets still in their boxes.

Right? There are collectors, then there are collectors. My buddy and I were just talking about this. We both prefer to purchase old games and actually play them, and have the collecting aspect be a secondary nostalgia thing. We own it, but we use it primarily. That's how we derive joy from it. Others need to have it on the shelf...forever. Doesn't make sense to me, but to each their own!

From the last Lego thread (https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/25729888/fpart/1/vc/1):

I have done a few Lego City sets with my kid, most recently the Forest Tractor one. Also a car with a camper trailer and an airplane. And a couple bins of bulk pieces from Walmart in the mix.

I had some cool sets as a kid. A Lego Castle set in the 80s, and in the 90s a train set with an electrified rail and and early Mindstorms robot set. Would like to find that stuff again in my parents' garage and/or get a more recent Mindstorms set. Also just some Technic style pieces in general, extra beams and connectors and gears etc. The forest Tractor set had a few special pieces like that.

Had a friend as a kid who was homeschooled and was way into the pirate and castle sets. He has a medieval history PhD now I think. His parents were both teachers already before the homeschooling so I guess they knew what they were doing.

I found some pretty cool Lego at the thrift store this week. At least 5 different sets mixed together. The biggest one is the Fire Nation ship from Last Airbender. It's huge, a foot and a half long. Lego has the instructions on their site but unfortunately the scans are not great and it's hard to see what's going on with any black bricks.

I got another score from Value Village last week that I thought I posted about, but I guess not.

The Lego Mindstorms set I got as a Christmas gift one year as a teenager turned up in my parents garage so I picked that up last weekend. The infrared thing to program it is missing though.

Also found a couple important bits from the train set I had. But not the tracks.

I think I'm more bothered by the fact that he thinks a lego set is going to be of any value any time soon.  Collect the figurines, posters, light sabers, etc...but fuckin' Legos??!!
Come on, bro...those are gonna be produced for a long time to come.  Cut your losses, and let's build that damn tie fighter.  I'm gonna give him a hard time about it again when I see him this friday...lol.

Agreed on the old games....gotta play those.  Unless I had something like the original legend of zelda still sealed....I don't think I could open that.

Lol this is true about LEGO! How much have they really changed in the last 30+ years? Other than the old boxes and artwork, nothing.

Let me know if you convince your friend to build that bitch.

Are you talking about new sets in the boxes that he just bought and doesn't want to make? Or has he had them a few years?

Both.  New sets in boxes that he either bought or had gifted to him, and he's had them for a couple years now.

Did you guys have a local Toys R Us that had those big displays that were behind ‘glass’ of all the different LEGO kits they had?

I was just thinking that would be a pretty cool day at work building those for the store display.
