That's from one of the cases in the link.  It makes we wonder, why does the USA give sentences like that?  Surely after the prisoner dies, they take him out of jail and cremate or bury him, right?  Or do they leave him imprisoned until the year 3000 or whatever then sweep out his dust?

Im seriously asking.  Why does the USA give unnatural prison terms?  Do the courts anticipate re-incarnation and think the US justice system has first dibs on the workings of karma?

Do they think someone might live to be 1000 years old?

While they are at it, why not just sentence them to an ETERNITY behind bars?  Why just a little over 1000 years, like buddy got for marijuana here?

Does anybody know?

Isnt it like.... combination of life sentences for multiple crimes?

I've always just assumed I knew why they did that. I've never really tried to put it into words.

Because the US prison system is all about punishment and revenge rather than rehabilitation and reintegration. Its why we still have the death penalty; it dissuades nobody and is purely state sanctioned murderous revenge.

 that's the best I can do with those bullshit sentences. 'He was sentenced to eighteen life sentences just in case he reincarnated eighteen times'

And dont forget to dissuade others from making the same decisions. And protection of the society. The most individually unfair place you can be is in a criminal proceeding. You arent looked at as an individual so far as you are looked at as the entire society.

I read a book about a judge. Was pretty interesting the thought that goes into sentencing. Probably not the best place to bring this up though in a life sentence for pot thread heh.

It really does not keep others from breaking the law.  It actually promotes mass hysteria that increases violent crime.  More cops and innocent people being hurt.

They want to outlaw abortion and make it a murder charge WITH DEATH PENALTY in Ohio.

Which is odd, cause Republicans have no problems shooting kids in foreign counties.

Does that say there's no felony possession cannabis charge in VA?!?

If you get caught with an oz of pot in VA, you can bet they're charging you with possession with intent to distribute; that comes with a class 5 felony charge.

My wife's firm has defended people against possession with intent to distribute for as little as a quarter oz of cannabis when a scale was also found in proximity of the weed.  Doesn't matter that you're just trying to make sure your bag weighs.  They think you're automatically selling when a scale or other items like sandwich baggies and/or scales are found close by.

It's because 88 year old ladies don't know shit about street.  The jury is hand picked among voters.  They say it's a lotto but it's really not.

Especially since average dumb ass citizen things a grand jury indictment is a sign of guilt.  When everyone should know that a ham sandwich would get an indictment.

Cruel yet not so unusual punishments.

I've lost a lot of respect for this country with it's outright extreme behaviour.

America is a sick, deranged country run by pyschopaths

That guy with 999 years got caught with... 2.2 to 100 lbs.

What the fuck does that even mean? 999 years for 100 lbs or less of weed? WTF?

Possible he could have only had 2.2 lbs? I don't even know how sentences like this are upheld. Guess appealing aint even worth it in such a fucked up onesided system.
