They say don't knock it till you try it but I wouldn't ever bother assembling one of these bootleg contraptions.
I throw my physics arguments at it and people reply well it works
The entire purpose of a flow hood is not only the cleaned filtered air but the fact that its laminar.
Non laminar clean air is theoretically useless. You cannot sterilize the inside of the shumv bag you can't sterilize your gloves etc... So all that clean air ends up turbulent and blowing contamination around. With a hood who cares that you cannot sterilize your gloves or the outside surface a petri dish. You work with predictable flow

I think you're right about the concept of laminar flow. I think your correct we can't sterilize our gloves or outside pitris. I've never used a real flow hood but I can imagine it. Doesn't mean that's how it actually is in real life. You can imagine what it's like but you won't build one so although your science and logic is sound you don't know what it's like. It's not like a wind tunnel in there like you think. Once the bag inflates it can only vent out the holes so much at a time. So although the fan is blowing, it's pushing against the air still trapped inside which can only flow out the holes. It passes through as one mass, it's not swirling around, I almost don't feel it. I don't think I would call it laminar but I suspect it's more laminar than you think. I also have to say 'I don't know but it works for me.'
Also since nothing touches the bag it doesn't matter if it's sterile, just like a sab floor don't touch it. When I use mine I often have several things going so I turn it on and start loading it up. It prob runs for fifteen min before any real work begins. If there are contams in there blowing around then it's logical that they would eventually be ejected out the arm holes or top bc that's where the current is flowing. Idk. Never been an issue. Someday if like to have a nice setup like yours but until then I don't see me needing anything else.

Anything you can do in front of a flowhood you can do in a schmuv.
Another gem from the nook back in the day, I remember when it was posted. I think the OP's name was molester IIRC.

I cant knock it, cause ive not tryed, but seriously, 24 hours isnt long enough time to determine a test plate is clean. At least a week,IMO, yeah some will show in a day or two, But to be a 100% sure, I say 10-14 days.

It's been a month, I've been doing agar, grain, LC, LI in the shmuv. I'm using my SAB as storage and I only need it for contammed work. Haven't used it since setting up the shmuv as I have 100% success rate with the shmuv. I use mine on speed 2 of 4 because it helps maintain structure. I spray the bag down with lysol, iso or whatever and roll it up when I'm done. I like it better than the SAB because it's harder to fuck up, it's also great for pouring agar because you can leave the lid off for 30 seconds in the moving air to avoid any condensation. Saves space too.

I hate my sab but I still use it when I’m doing something quick on small scale. When I wanna inoculate 50-100 quarts in one sitting the shmuv>all. And I used to have a hood.
