Just did some coir prep tests: A little surprised.

I found that the longer the coir is in very warm conditions, the more water it can hold at field capacity, by quite a bit (over 2 cups) Read on if thats interesting.
I had a crazy idea to cool down coir from 140f to room temp quickly. (as per FDA guidelines) And have been hearing people bucket prepping for a little over an hour. After that hour I put a fan on the bucket overnight. (3.25q boiling water to 650g brick coir)
What I got in the morning, was coir that I could easily squeeze over 2 cups of water out of it.
Then, I put 3.25q of boiling water into 650g coir and let it sit for hours slowly cooling with a blanket around it. After three hours it was about 130f and I could barely squeeze a drop out of it.
All this seems logical, I was just surprised that after 15 hours, the short pasteurization, fast cool down held far less water than the 3 hour, long pasteurization . And a big difference at that. I'm going to pasteurize the coir longer from here on out.

Probably also explains peoples widely different experience with field capacity. I used your recipe with the same brand and it was so wet or so dry stories we always hear

I recently found this out as well by sheer accident. I was simply trying to keep my bucket temps up after reading more about pasteurization technics via Bodhi (thanks) and started putting my buckets inside my grow room where the temps were steady 70º instead of the 55ºish of my house. the higher temps kept the buckets from cooling so fast and the coir soaked up the water ALLOT better. I was amazed but hadn't though about it much further. thanks for the post! now i have science to backup what happened to my by accident! Cheers

I usually hydrate coir in the morning then go to work. Just put a whole intact brick in a pot, dump 2.5 quarts of hot water on it and put the lid on. When I get home it's fully expanded hardly even needs much mixing - capacity right where I like it. Last time I did it it was dry AF. Coir isnt that comsistent to use exact measurements every time.

I bought a 54qt igloo cooler for coir prep. Takes like 24hr to cool down.

I tell you what does vary a lot, the size of a brick. 525g? sure 800g sure.
And I've found some variance between brands, but when I weigh exact 650g of the same brand... and prep it the same... it seems to be quite consistent.

Started using coolers myself... Found three in the buy/sell/free trade group for $0.00. Givesd me more buckets to put my tools in.

Put your bucket inside another bucket. Not exactly a Yeti but it keeps things hot a lot longer.

HA! I just saw this... I live in the mountains, at 10k'. so up here 40º is warm for us. the sun is far more intense at this height than at sea level.

It doesn't seem surprising that the longer a material is in contact with hot water, the more water that material will absorb, especially a fibrous material that may need softening like coir.
Cool idea though to test that hypothesis for yourself instead of just taking it on the word of others, or just a hunch

So I have recently found that I care not for cooler coir prep, but prefer in tub prep measured out. Coir compression seems to make a difference in hydration capacity when supplied X water at Y temp. When I break the same coir up more before adding water it seems to fluff more.

For quite a while now I've been weighing 750g compressed coir to 3650g hot water in a covered stock pot, sometimes overnight depending on my workflow. Add 1 qt verm after hydration and pasteurize. There's still deviation in field capacity but not enough to make any noticeable difference in the grow.
I've also ran 8 or so monos skipping pasteurization and completed 1st flushes with no issues. 2nd flushes might have contaminated sooner.
Pasteurization Fits into my workflow so I stick by it mostly.

I'm gonna get up and prep tubs. I'm gonna measure the coir and water by mass, and verm by volume as well, but I'm definitely going to manually crumble the coir into large gravel chunks. I will still be executing in-tub prep.
I figure larger surface area=faster absorbtion=less energy loss=higher internal temperature=greater hydration.

The coir I use is sold as "planting soil" and the package only says:"add 3 liters of water to get 10L planting soil" so one time I tried exactly that, I didn't boil the water I just added room temp water and I ended up with unusable slush (no way I'd use that as either planting soil nor mushroom substrate) but the package says that's how you get planting soil
