WBS contams lesson for noobs

talking with a friend who's was wondering why his last bulk grow did 2-3 full flushes and this one went 100% bad after G2g i was explaining to him that even contams can hide themselves until given the correct conditions. Over the last 2 years of trial and error I've learned more about spotting jars with contams than anything else. Thus then, saving myself from G2g'ing the wrong jars or ruining grows with 1 bad jar...
That being said, i had some "iffy" jars and whenever i run into these i always shake and colonize a few more times than normal just to see if anything will pop up or if its simply just colonizing slower than usual (this happens too).
The jar below is a perfect example. This jar looked like it could be good though the fist 2 shakes but the top of the seed wasn't colonizing that great (this is your first big red flag) so i shook it again, on the 3 round The seed colonized better but the top was still slower than the rest, so i shoot it again. On the 4th round of colonization a tiny little spot of green showed it face. and boom there's your hidden contams.
I explained to my friend that although he may have had clean spawn the first time around, during his G2g he probably got contams that didn't show their faces inside the jars to much, or were simply in the middle of the jar where they couldnt' be seen. Once he added his substrate the conditions got better for the mold and BOOM... a bunch of dead tubs.
All in all, this process is about Patience. you really can't rush any part of it. once you have your methods of success that work for you then you'll be able to speed things up a little but all in all the tiniest of corner cutting can lead to bad things.
Be patient, and make 100% sure your spawn is CLEAN (aka do agar).
Cheers. 10k

Great post
An extra shake or two on iffy jars has saved my bacon before too. It really makes a difference in exposing anything hidden.

Yes, this should be pinned for grain noobs. Took me so long to figure out why some jars colonize everything except the top layer of grains.

Is there a specific contamination that usually pops up when a jar isn’t colonizing the top layer?
Also would being too dry prevent it from colonizing? I had one jar that I made too dry and the top of the seeds wouldn’t grow anything but all the sides had pretty thick myc after a month.

Bacteria, in my limited experience.
Dry spawn takes forever to colonize. And long colonization time leads to more drying. I guess it’s possible that, after a month, the top grains are just too dry...that said, contams are still more likely in that scenario.
