Hello my friends! After a tedious set of flights from the USA, I arrived in Cusco, Peru. After only 24 hours of exploring the city, we (wife and I) traveled to the Sacred Valley, which will be our jumping off point for several days exploring Machu Pichu.
So far, I've only spotted one definite San Pedro - a beautiful specimen around 4 feet tall growing against a dilapidated, age old concrete wall in a ramshackle courtyard. As my wife is with me, there are no plans to trip on any substance - just sightseeing, picture taking, cultural education, and high altitude hiking. Will keep my eyes open for additional specimens as I hike the region, and post pix when we are back.
Be well, all!

It's spring here in Peru and the beginning of the rainy season. Flowers are starting to bloom, but way too early for seeds I'm afraid. I will have the opportunity to ask a farmer today, as my plans call for a hike in the valley where (from my observations driving in) seeds of either wheat or barley were being hand sown. I'm pretty sure customs would confiscate any cutting I take.
The corn (maise) is only about a foot tall at this time - so my impression is I'm not likely to find a San Pedro going to seed ATM. HOWEVER, I WILL nonetheless keep my eyes open and will bring a tiny jar withe me from spent hotel shampoo sample.

Neat. Peru huh. How about stopping by Ecuador on the way back. Some major rave spots in some of those places too.

I find the wifey thing hilarious
Mine also hates my tripping, but I'm afraid she has to put up with it. Even if she hates it, I actually like to have her present on my trips
Now, travelling to Peru, I would absolutely never be able to drag her there...

Ok!!! Got some San Pedro pix and "harvested" a 5 - 6 inch pup off of one. Wrapped it in a thin piece of cardboard from the hotel welcome card stock and secured with three rubber bands. Will try to get it back home and into soil tomorrow.
Will post pix in the appropriate forum.

For future reference/pro tip.
You can often find old fruits from previous years filled with seeds at the base of plants. They're dried but the seed is still viable.
Looking forward to hearing more.

Hey, Guys!
Hiking was GREAT, weather was spectacular! This is the southern hemisphere "spring", which in Peru really only means it's the rainy season. Since the temperature is much more a function of altitude and distance from the coast (i.e. Lima) they themselves talk about "dry" season and "rainy" season. Supposedly this is the start of the rainy season, although we had unremitting sunshine, and I got a pretty bad sunburn, and my ears are peeling.
My max altitude as determined by my Garmin 64s was 14,760 feet. I actually developed rhabdomyelysis from hiking too far, too fast, and too soon. My pee turned brown from muscle break down. Interesting experience.
To keep this maximally relevant, I am posting some pix of what I BELIEVE to be San Pedro and perhaps trichocereus peruvianus. I'll let the experts sort it out. Anyone care to hazard an opinion? The first picture is the pup I DID Manage to smuggle home in excellent condition. Gonna freshen up the cut, and get it growing.
All cactus were found in or around Cusco at ~11,200 feet or above. None in the Sacred Valley at 7,000 feet or at Machu Pichu at ~8,000 feet. Interested parties can refer to the pix, below.

Agapanthus with T. pachanoi in the background
Euphorbia on the left. T. peruvianus on the right.
The UV is a lot stronger at higher altitudes. Hope the ears aren't too crispy.

Thank you, TÄne Mahuta. I'm stoked that the pup I have is a T. peruvianus. I greatly appreciate your expertise in this matter.
Interesting user name (which I looked up!) and location, which I also had to Google, even though I'm a big fan of the Alien movies.

My title is Tane Mahuta. In honour of the God of the forest. According to Maori of Aoteroa or, New Zealand.
I live in Australia for now though.
My name here is, karode13. I have it in a weird colour and it often isn't seen by users. Just a floating 'M'
As for the Aliens thing, I'm glad it stumped an avid Alien fan. I'm a bit of a fan boy of those movies, comics etc. HAving the location there is an Easter Egg for people like us. Earth often feels like that place too.
The pup is a tentative identification. It's only young so I could be wrong. If one of those pictures is the mother plant, then whatever I identified it as is probably what it is. If no mother pics then we will have to wait until it matures a bit to confirm the id or not. My id is based on the specimens you posted and it has a similar look to those perus.
