Casing question.
    #2633033 - 05/03/04 06:54 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

OK I read the teks and I just want someone to double the procedure I'm gonna follow.

I have a PF cake that had a very poor first flush mainly due to my inexperience so now I'm gonna case it.

I'm gonna spread a 1/2 inch layer of perlite on the bottom of a Pyrex Casserole pan and add 1/4 inch of water(h20 + h202). Then take my cake and crumble it over the perlite and cover with plastic wrap. Leave in dark place until myc growth continues. Then take out, cover with 1/2 inch sterile casing mix of peat/limestone/verm. Then place in air tight plastic container fanning a couple of times a day keeping the temp at 70-75F and the RH at around 90%..

Does this sound good?

sounds alright, but you should cover up the sides of the pan with duct tape or aluminum foil. Also, use vermiculite on the bottom of the pan instead of perlite.

Yeah, you're better off buying an aluminum casserole pan(couple bucks for a 3 pack) because even if you tape it up, the light will find its way down through the glass and you'll get pinning everywhere you don't want it. Also Ganhi's right about the vermiculite, use that or nothing at all.

Perlite actually works well as a bottom layer.Ive used it before ,Magash has used it,Alounacara has used it and many others. It was the way i learned to case a long time ago.Its in several teks.

From the FAQ:
Some people don't use a "bottom casing layer" per se - instead they layer the bottom of the casing container with moistened perlite. This acts to "raise" the substrate and act as a shield against any runoff or mycelial waste which may accumulate there. Adding perlite can also raise the RH (relative humidity) as it wicks water into the substrate.

Im too lazy to look for more on it,but this is the basis behind it.

Butternut squash are softer than acorn or other types of squash, which makes them easier to cut and prepare.
