ID request please. Honey, but which species?
    #26326466 - 11/17/19 12:09 PM (1 year, 5 months ago)

Hi guys,

I found these in our lawn, growing out of railroad ties. California (Central Valley)
I know they are honeys but not sure on the species, anyone has a clue?

Thank you

Compare to armillaria mellea.armillaria ostoyae could also be a possibility.

Just a caution in case you are thinking of eating them.... if that's a real tie and was ever treated, it would likely be best to leave them alone... I'm pretty sure mushrooms can take up whatever nastiness the wood was coated/soaked in.

Disclaimer - I'm just a hobbyist and cannot absolutely guarantee any ID offered. I'm most familiar with the species found in the Pacific Northwest - those found in other parts of the world may vary considerably, so always do your own research to find out what grows in your area and what lookalikes you need to aware of. Understand that many mushroom species cannot be 100% reliably identified by photographs alone, even by an expert, so it may not be possible to go beyond suggesting a probable genus.

Yeah I'm not planning eating them for the exact reasons you've mentioned
I'm gonna try to transfer them to some fresh almond logs in the future.
