Everything before and leadin up to my first bulk grow looked good on agar. Got some nice looking plates like the one in my sig. Not amazing contam rates, but was sitting around 85% success. Sometimes higher.
Then after harvesting my first grow I decided to change it up and look through the top of the SAB instead of the side. I didn't have my table and SAB setup for that, so it lead to a lot of bumping and shit which lead to a lot of contamed plates. So I went back to the old way. Still was getting contams And ever since the first grow my success rates on agar have dropped to probably like 60%. Even though I feel my technique has gotten better.
I'm gonna pour a sleeve and do some transfers this weekend and film it all to post to see if people can help me figure out what possibly could be happening. Thanks man!

Looking to read up on the basics from a beginners perspective prepping and materials to finish product. I've been reading grow logs and browsing through here for a bit but some aren't as detailed that leaves me wondering 'how much of this' and 'what does this acronym mean'. If anyone could point me in the direction for that it'd be much appreciated.

That's odd you probably have a bacterial contamination, all my poo tubs just smell like mushrooms. Did you use a casing layer? I've never had this smell and always use pasteurized poo in my bulk grows usually mixed with coir and other additives

For your first grow I'd recommend doing either bulk mono tub if your nervous you can just start with some shoeboxes, it is the simplest tek I've seen and it has pleasing results compared to the pf tek. I'd recommend using grains as your spawn and poo or coir as your bulk substrate. By far the most cost effective way to get into it would be to pick up a 50lb sack of wild bird seed for 10$ at walmart and go get some free horse shit from your local farmer. Then all you need is a pressure cooker and some jars. Get your spores in syringe form for your first grow try and purchase liquid culture syringes if you can find them.

I was done with it transferred already and I only have so many no pour jars so I dump to keep extra plates freed up. Reason why I ask is most all of my cultures look pristine as do my grain jars but once spawned to coir I'm getting penicillium mold outbreaks on like 100% of my subs. Is there a hidden contamination in my cultures? I wonder how resistant is coir to penicillin? Will pasteurizimg fix my problem? I don't get trich. Like ever. But penicillium I've been battling for like 4 years or however long I've been here at this house. Cultures and grains seem fine. I'm just getting started back up but I'll post pics next outbreak.

One way to trouble shoot might be to process a jar without adding coir and add vermiculite instead, to see if the mold shows up.

I've been battling a contamination in my peuw culture as of latley. It's scary too because the plates look awesome.

That plate produced moldy tubs
Anyways I'm interested in your situation brotha. This is the route I'm gonna try and see if it helps https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23860431
Or run it over brf paste too. I don't have any no pours on deck so im gonna use the black tea in a standard dish

I'll try it and see what happens do I spawn to verm(mix it) or just case with it? I'll be doing this in a shoe box.

Thanks
Ill try the brf agar. I've actually used the tea agar to clean a culture before I did a tea agar hot pour. Well tea agar with activated carbon I heard that helps also maybe I'll try it again but I just dont get how it's in all my cultures.
That's why I started thinking maybe it's something to do with the substrate. Using only coir though so does this rule out it being sub? I know coir is mold resistant but is it resistant to all molds and is proper pasteurization worth trying?
I know the sporeload is high af here. It's probably a serious health hazard but this shouldn't be effecting my grows. I'm using sterilized grains and I'm pretty confident in my SAB tek.

I can't say for certain. But I don't think it's the coir. Coir is easy to rule out.
I learned a lot about my cultures once by colonizing a bag of coir thats been sterilized and colonized invitro
If it's your coir you'll get fruits , if it's your grain spawn it'll fbe in the bag too

Hello friend, and welcome to the Shroomery! I am quite the noob myself, but I have a phenomenal teacher, and the guys here are phenomenal themselves! I recommend starting here: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24420178/fpart/1/vc/1/nt/36
This is the very first thread I started with. Every link you run into there is going to have a link to another tek that goes deeper into detail. It takes a little bit of sifting to organize it all and make sense of it, but with diligence comes reward. Also, here is a link to a glossary and lexicon: https://www.shroomery.org/13894/Glossary-and-Lexicon-of-The-Online-Mushroom-Communitys-OMC-terms-updated-May-2017
Hope some of this helps! Mush love and happy growing!

I ask cuz im wondering where the contam started. I guess you wud know if it's originating from a plated culture or shit in your grain/process. Eager to help today i guess. Not only that but i wud like to know so i can better identify when contam has blended with myc.
