I don't have a freezer of that size.
But what is the two weeks freezing for?

I just get a pack of 100 baldes and switch to a new one anytime the old one starts to bend (from heating and cooling too many times). I only switch because well worn blades like to fall off during transfers and that sucks.

I just bend mine back and keep going. Use the same blade for years at a time sometimes.

If you are planning to have the grain around for awhile you may want to consider freezing it first or adding diatomaceous earth to it. I measure and bag my grains then store them in a chest freezer for two weeks before transferring the bags into 6 gallon buckets with those same gamma lids.

those arent prepped grains are they?

You dont have to use a big chest freezer I always used the small one on my fridge in batches before I got the big freezer.
It's to kill all the larvae and eggs that is already in your grain. Only needed for long term storage or already infested grains. Preppers do it to store rice, beans and other grains long term that's where I stole the idea from.
I believe bod has a tek on using diatomaceous earth though if you dont want to dick around with freezing grains in small batches.

And to kill the bugs in the freezer requires 2 weeks? Couldn't be done in 24 hours?

Less nutes or same nutes, since the bugs are feeding from the grain taking nutes from it.

No the eggs and stuff are microscopic and come in pretty much all grains including food grade the like rice you get from the store. It only becomes a problem once they sit around for a good while. This just makes sure anything in there dies and never becomes a problem. Evidently oats are pretty bad about weevils and it causes bacteria problems. Since I have to drive 2 hours to get grains I usually load up on 5 to 10 bags at a time and had to figure out a way to protect my investment. If you're only dealing with a bag or 2 at a time this step is probably not necessary.

Supposedly they cause pretty bad bacteria problems on oats. Ive read lots of people saying they had to throw grains away after a weevil infestation because no matter how long they sterilized the grains would be bacterial.

Well the living bugs would die right away but the unhatched eggs are the concern. I think one to two weeks is recommended for food prep. You can probably get away with less idk. If you stick your hand in a bag that's been frozen for awhile it doesnt feel cold because the grains are dry I feel like the lack of moisture contributes to why it takes a while.

interesting... I'll get earwigs or snails crawling on my grains if I leave them to dry outside for too long. I always just pc em. I try to pick out the big snails. but the myc seems to colonize em just fine. never had weevils tho. I wonder what it is about them that causes such a problem.

this makes me curious. I wonder if my bag of oats that I deemed as "bacterial" was just weevil infested? I still have the bag so maybe I'll try freezing some and give em another go.

Just a thought. I think a lot of things get blamed when improper sterile tek and bad inoculate are really the problem. Riddle me this, how can a sterilized weevil magically create bacteria? I know we grow magic but that doesn't mean magical things are happening along the way (other than the production of magical molecules)

Most microbial cells will die at a temperature of 100 ΒΊC. However, some bacterial spores will survive this and need temperatures around 130ΒΊC 266 f. to kill them.

Im with you on this. curious about my oats tho. never had issues with any other grains but everytime with this bag/brand in general. I attributed it to a high endospore load

I agree with this as well Ive only read about others saying this but I still dont want bug infested grains. I used freezing to kill off eggs and gamma lids to keep out rats. Im sure you can leave 5 to 10 80lb bags of grains laying around without any problem but I think i'll keep doing it this way lol.

If it is im not sure this would help the idea here is prevention if those grains are bad for some reason I dont believe freezing will help anything.
