Hi guys,
I'm curious which psychoactive species of mushroom have been found in the Wellington region of New Zealand. I know Psilocybe subaeruginosa is around. What else exists in Wellington area?
Thanks!

This is all correct apart from Panaeolus cyanescens, it's a tropical species which has never been collected here, there are no records of it in any NZ fungal herbariums.

What are your thoughts of the anecdotal reports of people finding "blue meanies" in cow poop around Taranaki? I think I can remember reading a post from John Allen about it

Ages ago I know for sure someone found pan cyans in horse poo in west auckland. I saw them and everything, they also had a photo they posted on here. Would be probably very difficult to find. Pretty sure it was a one off

Without photos or any actual verified herbarium collections in PDD there just is no proof that it is here, I'll believe it when I see it.

Yes, this is certainly not Panaeolus, it's either Psilocybe fimetaria or P. alutacea which is what I always suspected the mushroom was that has been reported from the Taranaki region as Panaeolus cyanescens or what they called Blue Meanies.
Those tropical Panaeolus species just don't occur here.
Thanks xthrx for the links

Hi guys, thanks for the info so far. I'm really curious about Wellington specifically since New Zealand varies so greatly in terms of climate and environment.

That's an interesting collection for sure. I would assume horse shit and NZ would be Psilocybe alutacea.
Psilocybe fimetaria, that's a new one I ain't ever heard of... Might have to start scanning horse shit for alutacea.

Yo inski, has Psilocybe fimetaria been confirmed to occur in NZ? Quickly looked it up and it looks just like a big version of alutacea.
What general months/season is alutacea generally found in NZ? Do you just have to go to a horses hood and scan the shit? Any expert advice on how to potentially find some for myself.

I'll chuck up the full list of all the psilocybin/potential psilocybin mushrooms that occur in NZ (AFAIK). After I cook/eat then smoke a cone of white rhino that is. I have the motherfucking master list laying around.

PSILOCYBIN MUSHROOMS OF NEW ZEALAND
- Gymnopilus luteofolius - Gymnopilus purpuratus - Gymnopilus sp. (Not much is known about the psilocybin containing Gymnopilus mushrooms in NZ, they are not well enough documented to say for certain. Gymnopilus junonius is here, but does not contain psilocybin apparently. All the blue/green staining Gymnopilus finds in NZ would have to be sent to someone up there like Alan Rockefeller to do DNA analysis on and determine the exact species for certain.)
- Inocybe calamistratoides (Probably contains psilocybin, but being Incoybe, may also probably poison you!)
- Panaeolopsis nirimbii
- Panaeolus cinctulus
- Pluteus velutinornatus
- Psilocybe alutacea - Psilocybe angluospora - Psilocybe aucklandiae - Psilocybe makarorae - Psilocybe semilanceata - Psilocybe subaeruginosa (Other members of section Cyanescens, such as Psilocybe cyanescens and Psilocybe allenii have also been reported to occur here apparently!) - Psilocybe 'subsecotioides' - Psilocybe tasmaniana - Psilocybe weraroa
Am I missing any?

Holly shit wow! You learn something new everyday!
How do I distinguish alutacea and fimetaria? Quite similar marcoscopically I take it?
The two horse shit loving species of NZ huh.

Yes, gone into a way more interesting topic than a mundane inquire of what else can I find other than subs in woodchips in Wellington. We have extended your question to New Zealand wide magic mushrooms, which is more interesting and broad if I say so myself.
Do you have any photo of Psilocybe fimetaria growing in New Zealand inski? I can't seem to find any collection images of that species in NZ.

Sorry if that came off cunty! But you really got to put in a bit of your own effort... I'm from Auckland so I don't care too much about what grows in Wellington, but I'll spoon-feed it to ya anyway since I'm stoned and it's late and I kinda have nothing better to do!
Okay, so in Wellington, other than Psilocybe subaeruginosa in specific, I would be on the look out for Psilocybe 'subsecotioides'. They share the same tan-bark woodchip substrate. Same habitat. You might find them fruiting alongside each other even!
Heaps of collections of Psilocybe weraroa seem to come from Wellington so that's another one. Psilocybe semilanceata is in Wellington, another! Please check this out for an old post of a user from Wellington finding Psilocybe semilanceata and Psilocybe weraroa! https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/8383415#8383415 I found this from USING THE FUCKING SEARCH ENGINE! We tell noobs UTFSE for a reason.
And I would highly expect Psilocybe angluospora and Psilocybe tasmaniana to be in Wellington most likely, I would honestly put money on them being in Wellington. Hint. Their substrate is brown-bark woodchip, Psilocybe subaeruginosa and Psilocybe 'subsecotioides' substrate is tan-bark woodchip.
That's a basic overview, probably a couple other species on my NZ list will also be in hiding in Wellington. Obviously.
