So, my experiences in dating women have led me to interesting crossroads where I've been told I was going to hell for not believing in whatever the hell my dates believed (I generally shut off my mind when I realize I'm in the company of closed-minded people.) Typically, it sounds something like, "if you haven't accepted Jesus as your savior, you're going to hell when you die. If you believe in another God, you will go to hell."
Here's my question: Say Bob was born on a remote island that had nothing but a few fruit trees, which was the only source for food on the island. He knew nobody growing up, and had no instruction on any religion, Christianity, Hindu, or otherwise. He grew up knowing only that the fruit from the trees keeps him alive. He views those trees as his life-source, and as a god-like entity in his life. He dies with this belief because it is all he has ever known. Would he go to hell?
I argued this with one of my brilliant dates, and she just started crying because she didn't have an answer. If she said yes, her god would be cruel and incompassionate - conform or die. If she said no, she would admit what she said was wrong, and that you don't necessarily need to accept Jesus as your savior to avoid going to hell - but then where is the line drawn between heaven and hell?
People can be so blinded by religion it's scary. Sometimes, I just want to slap them for being so ignorant, but that would make me as bad as they are. I guess I have to keep an open mind that most people in this world actually, cannot open their minds - or just don't want to. Are they scared?

I run into this crap all the time! I'm guilty of not being able to open my mind fully though. I find it very difficult to continue relationships with people like this. In a way, I'm like them for doing so, but damn - open your eyes people!

man, the problem is misunderstanding. *sigh* all i can think is DUH.
i feel sorry for that poor soul, she is that hurt by this shit that she broke down crying in fear of a god that loves her, when will people start realizing how harmful this bullshit is?

I think that sums it up perfectly. While he has no impact on my spirituality whatsoever, I do believe that jesus could have been an actual person, but I also believe his message has been extremely distorted. Too much ego has been instilled in this religion and people fail to see the essence of his teachings. Just another example of the pathless being given a distilled, if not fake truth.

Hehe, I'm actually surprised that she hadn't gotten the programmed response put into her "If they hear the message, they will burn in hell if they don't accept it; if they don't hear the message, then they will not go to hell." 
Yes, I know, that actually doesn't make any sense, but hell, neither does believe in a judgemental God, or a heaven and a hell.

From talking to Christians, my understanding is that they believe we all are sinners and deserve to go to hell, but by accepting Jesus into our hearts, we can escape it. It still sounds like bullshit to me, tho. If God loved us enough to have his son die for our sins, he would probably love us enough to save everyone from hell, regardless of what they believe.

well, when you die, you get one last chance to accept him as your savior. after you have died.
the best way i can explain it, it's like a crossroad. one way is heaven, one way is hell. you choose.
it sounds to me like your dates are the blind followers. maybe look for an educated Christian, that can sustain conversation, and can provide you answers to your skepticism.
also, for the open mind comment. there is definitely certain degrees of opening your mind. most people arn't as open minded as this forum.

You all have read my mind. I wonder - "if you hear the message, and don't accept it, you go to hell." Does the quality of that message matter? What if a group of soldiers pillaged a small town, stole all their money, raped their women and burned down all the buildings. As they were leaving, they said, "Accept Jesus as your savior and you will be saved." Not sure I would follow that message. eh eh eh.
Touche to your quality over quantity comment. I am frequently a slave to my hormones. Only one organ works at a time, and far too often the wrong one takes over. It's all down hill from there.

God puts in all of us a desire for Him, and it's up to you whether you accept it or not. Christ Yashua has revealed Himself to me without going to church,if you accept that desire for God the Son will reveal many things to you but if you deny it then you will be denied.Yashua can reveal Himself to whomever He chooses whenever He choose and doesnt need a buliding to do it in, He created you and know exactly what you need and how to bring you there, and myself was pretty much on a desert island when He showed Himself to me

What really gets me is when people try to push their religion onto you. That's cool you believe it. Even better you feel comfort in believing it. But dude, don't come selling that shit to me door-to-door! Damn.
You seem at peace with your beliefs peleg, that's cool. Aggression in religion seems like an oxymoron to me.
