You can steam sterilize agar without a PC, I'd say 30-45 mins should do the trick. 2 hours just seems way too long.

Just get a PC bro, like everyone says just go find a cheap one at the thrift store... I always just let that go in one ear and out the other and I bought a new huge 22qt anyways but then this last weekend I was out shopping at the thrift store and i looked out of curiosity and they seriously had maybe 10 different PCs they were smaller but still doable just would have to do a few more batches...
Anyways the big ass PC I got was still damn well worth it! I love it!
Ok so say you get away with out PCing your agar, then u get a clean culture... then what ate your gonna do with it? U plan on using grains dont u? Those NEED to be PCed... just my 2 cents
PCers are game changers...

Not true....people steam sterilize grains all the time.
A PC is certainly preferred, but to answer OP's question directly it can all be done without a PC

You are absolutely right bro. I just cant find any at the thrift stores around me. The ones i find online are either too small or way too expensive. But you are 100% correct. I do need one if i want to step up my mycology.

A 23qt Presto is budget friendly and can be found on Amazon. Works well too!

Let me refrase... if you want consistently sterile jars of grain, you need to PC...
If you want to have a bunch of jars fail consistently (with some lucky exceptions) you should definitely steam your grains...
You could also poop in a Mason jar and injoculate with MS... it CAN be done but I probably wouldn't.... if you looking for what you "should" do, not what you can do...you should get a PC... end of story

RogerRabbit ran a successful mushroom farm that used steamed grains.

Yep! Brian Callow at What the Fungus is another one that runs a farm on steam sterilization.

I admittedly am not familiar with his work... but I'm willing to bet that for that one successful story there are many more that ended in failure.
This debate will never be put to rest, but one thing that cannot be argued is that PC are more effective at killing shit....

Naw a pc is how we do it as a hobby. A steamer can be built to run 100 qts or more and steamed for 8 hours with 100% success, this would have taken over 24 hours with a pc.

I knew I was missing something.... ok but who the hell wants to steam grains for 8hrs? And how u gonna do that with out stopping and refilling the pot with water?
I'm assuming a steamer built for mushroom cultivation is made to constantly steam for those 8 hrs...

RR has a build log for a steam steriliser http://www.mushroomvideos.com/55-Gallon-Drum-Sterilizer. Also Google steam generator.
OP, yes you can, but it needs to go for a while. Pick a time to steam. Make a few controls, and leave them for a few weeks. If stuff grows on them, then you're steaming for too short.
