The best winter clothing

What do you wear for trekking around I. The snow for long periods of time? What keeps you warm and dry?

I am pretty dead set on trying some wool pants. To deflect water and such.

But I wonder if wool is better than synthetic?

I would go with wool. Wool holds in heat even when wet.

I like wool for upper body, synthetic for lower body.  Wool keeps you warm when wet but holds way more water than synthetic. Synthetic gets stinky and uncomfortable fast though.
