Impatient me
    #26296968 - 11/03/19 09:03 PM (1 year, 3 months ago)

Ive got rye berries in the pressure cooker right now but won't get my spores for 5 days.  If i don't open the pressure cooker till the spores arrive,  do you think my berries will still be sterile?

Probably be fine not the best practice all the time but I do jars day or two ahead somtimes I only say not the best practice until your confident in your prep but even then best to use soon as you can.

They should be fine in fives days. I would remove them instead of leaving in PC. Sitting moist doesn't sound good.

Or just make brf cakes instead since you're getting spores. Spore to grain is risky, check into agar.

They're in jars with holes in the lids and a piece of tape covering the holes (my added precaution) until i inject them.  Also covering the lids is aluminum foil.  The lids are on loose cause i didn't want jars according.

Doesn't really matter... you'll have a high chance of failure going MS>grain.

Yes berries.  Got them at the health food store.  Yes jars with lids and holes.  I did this 2 years ago and had results.

Ok so grain jars with 4 holes and no fixed filter, just some mp tape.

Ok, well yea squirting syringe straight to grains is a bit outdated practice. It can be done, but contam rate is high. Also mp tape is not a very good filter. Usually you want so.e sfd, polyfil, or at least tyvek covering a single get hole.

Ive got vermiculite covering the top inch of the jar.  Does that still concern you? I really don't want contamination.

Verm makes an alright filter, but you can't shake it like a normal grain jar. But then there's still the overall concern of spore straight to grain.

It's really a neat mix n match you got goin on. I think this is the first I seen this. Are you using half pints or quarts?

Hey man I was on the same track as you until everybody here redirected me. I know it sounds like a pain in the ass but you really dont wanna use up the spore solution you paid/ waited / had high expectations for just shooting them into any kind of grains. So im thinking the more experienced people here would tell you that your best bet would be to dump the rye berries that you PC'd. Wash the jars and go with PF TEK. Save some in the syringe and shoot them onto some pastyplates: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19208976/fpart/1/vc/1
AGAR>Grain is gonna take you a little longer but much higher success rate.
This way you only lose the cost of the rye berries and not an extra 5 weeks or so of time as well.

Hope this helps

I don't know if I mentioned this,  but I have cyanecens spores coming.  By the way,  how do you folks feel about just doing a liquid culture instead of injecting jars of grain?  I mean,  I understand you feel jars of grain are not a good choice

spores>lc is worse than spores>grains. You need to do agar to make it clean.

Cyanecens are trickier and more fickle than cubes. I would recommend developing your basic skills with cubes before moving on to exotic actives that have even more demanding conditions to get fruits.

Ok,  so I found a growing kit online through (redacted) and I'm wondering what you folks think about that.  It had everything I'll need except spores.  Do you figure that's a good form of training wheels since it seems I need more experience?

Absolutely don't do it. Their products are extremely overpriced and not even close to worth it. The jars/bags will almost surly be dirty by the time you get them. I bought jars from them when I was a noob and they all contamed.

Just learn how to make your own jars, dude. It's not that hard, and it will be well worth the experience.

Also, remove the vendor name, it's against rules.

Liquid cultire is very risky, not recommended for beginners. And it's not that jars of grain are not a good choice; they are a preferred choice, actually. It's the inoculation method which raises some cause for concern. Inoculating grains with liquid culture or multispore syringe will be like taking a shot in the dark. You won't know if they are contaminated until your grains are contaminated. Agar can be intimidating, but you will know the culture is clean before they ever touch your grains.

Lc isn’t risky if you’re sterile and use clean agar.
