Making CHONKER cakes out of three-wick Bath and Body Works candle jars!

Not long ago, I got bored and ran out of jars, so I made some CHONKER brf cakes out of three-wick bath and body works candles. They hold 2 pints of substrate a piece!

First, I popped the spent candles in the freezer for a few hours, which shrinks the wax away from the glass, so you can just pop it out with a smack against the palm. Then I just cleaned up the glass on the inside with a razor, and used goo-gone on the outside to remove the label residue.

This isn't strictly a BRF cake, as you can see there's some oats in there. The recipe I used was:
1-3/4 cup home made BRF 2 cup pre-boiled and dried whole oats 4 cup fine verm 1-1/4 cup water
Now you may think that's pretty dry, and when I loaded them, it seemed that way. But I knew that during the PC process, the oats would sweat a bit into the surrounding mixture and make it "just right."
I prepared the metal lids of the jars by nailing 6 inoculation ports. One in the middle, five around the edges in a pentacle shape. The lids also had a plastic ring that provide a pretty good seal, but I was worried that they might melt. And one did.

I felt the lid jiggle loosely immediately upon taking off the foil. So, since the verm layer was intact (but sunk a bit during PCing) I removed the melted ring and put the lid back on, all in my SAB.
Unfortunately one showed a spot of green a couple weeks into it... but the other is fine! GIF time!

It's about a week or two away from full colonization, no premature pins yet. I'll update this weird little adventure soon!

Can't say I've ever seen a quart-size BRF cake, let alone a hybrid BRF/oat one.

My CHONKER ~2 pint BRF/WO cake has been birthed, dunked, and will be ready to hit the fruiting chamber tomorrow!

And she's sitting purdy in a humidity chamber. Here she is next to a regular half pint cake:

Alright, fruit time!

I let it go for a bit too long, check out those veils.
First flush:
From inoculation to fruit:
- 53 days @ constant 65 degrees
- 76 grams wet
- Stems on these are really fuckin solid. Not a bit of hollowness from butt to cap, haven't had that before!
- Even after consolidating for a week, there were maybe two premature pins on the whole thing. Again, unusual for me. Most of my cakes start pinning in the jar.
- Has a couple aborts and a much higher rate of mutants than my other jars did. There's a few "harelipped" ones on the other side, and one had a normal looking cap with a hole in the middle.
The other chonker cake that had a spot of green, ended up being fine. When I checked on it, the green spot was completely overtaken with myc, so it's also pumped out a flush of 76 grams- though it has a less vital, more "sickly" look than the one I posted above.
Fun experiment overall, I look forward to seeing what comes out of the second flush.

Round 2: Fight!

Oddly enough, the sicklier cake on the right seems to be pushing flushes faster. Bonus BRF cake shredded to coir in a chinese takeout container for second flush in the background because I can't just be normal.

I'm glad you like it.
I finished the second flush a few days ago and shredded them both, mixed into some coir and packed it into a glass bowl, stuffed into a humidity chamber. Why? Because a weird cake deserves a weird end.
Cake 1
First flush: 76 grams wet Second flush: 67 grams wet 48 days from inoculation to first flush
Cake 2 (that almost got tossed due to green mold spot):
First flush: 76 grams wet Second flush: 72 grams wet 54 days from inoculation to first flush
So far the most interesting thing about it is as I mentioned, the stems on these are the most solid I have ever grown. Both cakes across both flushes showed this property.

Thick stipes are not as common as I expected them to be when I started growing, you have a good culture there!
Also, I bet you'll get at least one more flush from your "super spawn" (I think that's what people used to call it), of just mashing up spent cakes and coir. It'll give it a bit more vigor! Post some pictures

Yo, it's been a while! I had to go out of town for a couple weeks, and finally came home to this:

They're not very big, each cap is about the size of a quarter. But they're trying their best dammit!
