Casing Question for a Dummy
    #2629034 - 05/02/04 07:42 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

I started preparing a nice big ass casing tonight and when i went to get my verm well it just wasnt there at all ...I threw out 2 nice brand new bags i had just bought  when i cleaned up last time. Anyway i am pasturizing Aqua Coir from the Depot w/a small amt of hydrated lime and just mixing perlite in place of my verm....I think it will work ok but if can give me any help/tips ie:Loki,Auto,Shirley,Maga? It will be appreciated.. I put my two new bags of verm in a old horse feed bag all nice n neat and then i must have chunked the whole mess... damnit Verm is hard to find in the big bags anymore so what i did throw away were just 2 small bags :nonono:

I would jusrt use the coir/lime if i were you.Ive cased several times with 100% coir and had good results.Just use the perlite for the bottom layer.Unless its already in the mix.

I hope when you buffered w/ lime u checked the pH. I have expericed a couple burns w/o testing it properly. And isnt perlite naturaly alkoloid? Make sure you test a a batch of the casing material (after water added of course). Unless u have substrait to burn, I know I didnt. As for aqua coir...

I have heard many good things, why not just case it strait w/ the coir?

And finally, the best verm I ever used came from:
Sun Gro Horticulture
PO BOX 8029 Pine Bluff, AR 870-536-3453 (Mon-Fri 8am-4pm)
PO BOX 140 Seneca, IL 815-375-6001 (hrs?)
800-255-9057

18 lbs bag lasted me 2 years.

Ahh, is good to B back.

The stuff im using is called Aqua Coir potting soil mix from Depot and it has a small amt of perlite allready....Fuck it i have it all ready now so im gonna just use it mixed with the perlite...
I have been doing casings with a perlite base using Aquacoir/verm as the casing layer for awhile now so it will work...I just wanted some pointers from Maga or one the other good growers just in case...Fuck being a know it all it dont bother me to ask for advice from anybody here even if they are a newwbieeee :smile:I dont give a shit if it contamms after the first flush anyway because i dont like keeping a casing around just so i can get a few more...if ya do it right and induce pinning at the right time you dont get much from a second flush anyway....

Why use perlite at all? It does the exact oposite as verm. Coco Coir holds water almost as good.

Perlite is used sometimes in casings as the bottom layer, under the substrate. It promotes drainage and works very well, several teks use to suggest this.It was the way to do it back in the day.thats what i started with.Thats what i meant.

If its already in the siol mix you have then thats cool,i didnt understand that.I dont see it making a differance.
Next time use squash and bisquits.

I am the one who first tryed the perlite base and found that i was getting better flushes because of the wicking effect of perlite...someone might have done it before me so im not saying i invented it but it does work well....I use corn a lot and you have to make shure you dont have any hidden green when you case or you wont even get 1 flush....heres ya sum bisquits dudeck ya ratings

Y a it works real well.I saw the pictures of that grow i reemember. My first 3 casings were with a perlite bottom. They did great. It does help prevent ontams.
People just stopped using it for some reason.Same way they stopped using things like the Ramsey seal,ect..my first pf jars had the ramsey seal.
You did bring it back though,i give ya credit for that.
People need to start realizing it can be done and it works well.I like it better than verm for a bottom layer.
Fry that up and spread it on some bisquits.

Actually you can get contams easily from a perlite base but i think it wicks so much moisture to the mycellial network that you get just about all your gonna get with a 1st n 2nd flush so contam isnt a factor...I have problems with green being present in an allready fully colonised jar but that has been with corn only and never happens with wbs...I just made a 6 qt spawned corn casing so i hope it will do ok...

Ive never tried it with anything but either PF cakes or rye berries, and gone 3+ flushes no contamsevery time except once.and that time was my own fault because the rye i used was questionable to begin with, maybe it is the corn then, since its never happened when you used WBS.

I used to dig the corn out with a knife so i was cutting open areas that contammed quickly....I use gloves and am a lot gentler removing the colonised corn so that might help...I still have some jars that have green in places in the jars but that crapp goes in the garden

ive never used corn, thats my next project.i am going to try corn invitro.I am not concerned about yield,i grow because its interesting and fun,i dont like eating shrooms much anymore, too dark.So i try alot of experiments. Not that corn invitro is an experiment, hippie has been doing it a while, its just my first corn grow.

Your gonna have no problem with the coir. Hell I just put 25% verm in myself and that is when I have a 30 LB bag of it around. Damn, I'm so fucken lazy I just use it as a bottom layer too. I use to use perlite but hated preparing different stuff for bottom layer and top. (just me folks like I said I'm lazy). There is a company called SJMann out of Europe somewhere that started the perlite in the bottom thing.

Dont even try an invitro with corn...i incubate corn in full light and havent ever seen even a small pin...i use the lights for the heat source when incubating..just use BRF ...i did some in Corona beer bottles last x-mas and gave a few away as presents

Please post your results with the aqua coir. I have a bag of it and it would be great if it turns out to be good for casing.

You need to pasturize it because it is a soil mix
