Newly found...

I found a little group of shrooms growin right outside my back door that I think are psychedelic... I picked a couple to see if they'd go blue at all, thus confirming psychoactive ingredients... A couple questions first, though... Are there any toxic shrooms that also contain the bluing (psilocilin?) chemical in them? Here's the pic..

I have a very real answer for you. "Thus confirming psychoactive ingredients"...WRONG. You cannot assume that just because a mushroom blues that it is psychoactive and definately not good to assume it is good to eat.

Bluing wasn't going to make my decision on whether to eat it or not... I was just thinking that might help in identification... These shrooms DO have gills, and the colour of the cap is beige-ish brown-ish golden-ish... Any more help or questions for identifying? Oh yeah, I live in southern Ontario (in Canada, above new york) if that helps...

I'm not aware of any mushrooms that are poisonous that also contain psilocybin or psilocin.

There are many mushrooms that bruise bluish or greenish that are poisonous. A spore print will help to separate most of those from the active species. The majority of poisonous, blue staining mushrooms are boletes. They are easy to separate because they have tubes instead of gills.

The mushroom in your photo looks like a species of Coprinus. A few species from that genus are edible, many are mildly poisonous. As a group they are often called Inky Caps because of the tendency of many species to degenerate into inklike slime.

Happy mushrooming!

Hmm... That 'inky cap' nickname seems to suit the ones I found quite well... There's a strong black residue in the gills... Wasn't sure if it was just mud... I think they were growing on some kind of shit or fertilizer though
