first time cultivating

i've been growing my own 3 substrate cakes using the pf tek. Everything is going fine except it's been about a month, and i'm starting to wonder about some things. two of the cakes have small little pinners, however what concerns me is that the rest of the cake isn't white. would it be better to wait until the cakes are completely white, or is it ok to birth them while there are some totally un-inhabited patches of about 1" in diameter. There doesn't appear to be any contamination. I just don't want to screw up my first batch. advice and suggestions are welcome! thanks

sorry, one more thing. I've had to grow these cakes under extremely dark conditions, but i know that they're warm. How influencial is light to the growing process, i tried finding info on it in my pf tek book, but it didn't really help me out. thanks

if you read, it is best to keep them without light during the inccubation period because light tells the cakes to start pinning...

If you birth them with substrate showing they are going to cantam in those places.

sounds like your cakes may have stalled or halted growth :frown:

You sure you have the right conditions ?? jars should be incubated at 85F.

ahhh! that could be a problem. I've been growing them in my closet, so they're not seeing any temperature above 70. would a lower temperature just make them take longer, or could it have some harmful effects to the final products? i do reiterate... i am new to this

Damn dude, with temp ever at low 70's it could take months, not only that by colonization taking longer the contams have a better chance of taking over the jar since its not colonizing as fast as it should.

Yeah, a friend in college once tried growing in a cold room with no heat at all. The temps stayed in the 60-65 degree farenheit range. Those jars were about 40% colonized after 3 months. I convinced him to let me take them home over winter break where they got a vacation to the warm temps under my water bed. They finished right on up after another week. Warm temps help a whole lot. Self made incubaters are the best and most consistent. They consist of two rubbermaid containers, water and an aquarium heater in the bottom to keep temps constant in the top for your jars. Many plans available, just use the search engine and you will find a lot of novel ideas about incubators.

I made my own incubator for 20 bucks, my jars colonized 100% after 10 days.

I incubatied my jars in 70 degree ranges - they seem almost fully colonized after just over 2 weeks - maybe I got lucky.

My question is: when the jar is fully colonized, will the top layer of dry verm be colonized too?...or will it always be exposed?...
