In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter, bitter," he answered;
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."

Try :

Europe '72
Without a Net
Many of the Dick's Picks are great. I recommend volumes 1,2, 8, 17 and 18. See them here:
http://www.dead.net/merchandising/music/grateful_dead/Dicks_Picks_5/index.html
Basically I suggest anyhting live but if you're interested in trying out some of their studio stuff I can make some recommendations for that too. You could just download some shows from gdlive.com too.

I agree, that Terrapin Station special set is great!!!

Well, as has already been suggested, Live Grateful Dead is where it's at... if you want to hear some studio stuff, check out the albums American Beauty, Workingman's Dead, Terrapin Station, or Blues for Allah (those are the only studio albums I listen to... and not very often  )

Some suggestions I can give is any show from May of 1977 (check out http://www.gdlive.com or http://www.archive.com for downloadable shows), or any show that has a St Stephen > Darkstar or Chinacat Sunflower > I know you rider or Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain... all three of these jams might help give you some idea about what the Dead are all about.

Or better yet, go see them on their summer tour (sans Jerry, of course :frown: ) with a healthy dose of your favorite psychedelic

be warned, though... you will get hooked!

i would suggest the album "Hundred Year Hall" which is recorded live in Fankfurt Germany 4-26-72.  I think this is a little better than Europe 72,  it's got a sweet Playing In The Band, Love light,Truckin, Comes a Time, Going Down The Road, Chinacat and a really kool part when Garcia and Weir battle over wether to play Not Fade Away or Going Down The Road! And my truly favorite is the thirty six min. Other One Jam!!
