Jars not looking promising
    #2627922 - 05/02/04 02:39 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Question:

How long is the maximum it usually takes for jars to show signs of mycelium growth after initial innoculation?

Why I ask:

This is the second time I have innoculated jars in my life, and today (Sunday) is day 3 after the initial innoculation with only one out of ten jars showing signs of mycellium growth.  I used 1 quart jars with 2/3 cup verm, 1/4 cup BRF, and 1/4 distilled water ratios of substrate. I didn't follow a guide when preparing these jars because I have done this once already and the only thing I used the guide for was the ratios for the substrate.

My procedure was as follows:

I lysoled my mixing bowl and work area, then I prepared the substrate in a large bowl mixing 4 cups of verm with 1 and 1/2 cup of BRF with 1 and a half cups of water.  I filled the 1 quart jars as loosely as possible with the substrate and filled the final 1/2 inch of each jar with dry vermiculite. The jars sat for 24 - 36 hours (depending on the batch) sealed and then holes were poked in the top to the jars with a nail, alluminum was put around the top of the jars and they were sterilized by boiling water 1/4 the way up the jars in a pan with a lid for 1+ hour each batch.  I then innoculated the jars after 3-6 hours from sterilizing (depending on the batch). Since then, the jars have been sitting in a dark room on a heating pad on the low setting witch initially sat under the jars, but today I moved it to under the jar box because the jars seemed too hot.

I guess my real question is did I mess up my mushies

Any advice or critiques of my procedure will be greatly appreciated.

If it's only day 3, there's no need to panic yet. Give it a couple days.

Also check for verm:brf ratios. I don't use brf, so I'm not sure, I thought it was 2:1.

Your using quart jars for BRF? Must take forever. May want to look into grains my quart jars finish in 6 to 9 days from spore. Also a good mix for BRF is 2 parts verm, 1 part brf, 1 part water.

Good luck.

AFOAF used grain and his jars showed mycelium growth within 5-6days from innoculation.
You should be good to go,just be patient my friend.
Peace,
PF~

That's the problem, he's using BRF in quart jars not grain. Hey, but if it works more power to him. I wish him luck.
