Hello,
I'm pretty sure these are a Panaeolus type.
I understand it is difficult to identify the difference between P. Olivaceus or P. Cinctilus.
Any help is appreciated.
Note: These samples where only found in wood chips. I could not find any of these growing in grass. Some of these can get pretty big too.
Please let me know if there is any additional information I could provide to help ID these. There are thousands of these growing in my son elementary school. 
Habitat:
Growing in wood chips under trees. King County, Washington.
Gills:
Grey purple to jet black with age.
Stem:
White to tan. Thin but not flimsy
Cap:
Convex and conical, .5 to 1.5 inches, tan to dark brown with age. Some turning grayish with age
Spore print color:
Black with possible purple tint. Look for yourself.
Bruising:
Some graying to cap but No color change stem when bruised

Psathyrella species. Panaeolus doesn't grow in that kind of substrates.

Not Panaeolus, these are a Psathyrella species.

Pans (and other actives) will have much beefier stems, which will not fray like mozzarella. There's also more meat to them.
Psathyrella grow where other mushrooms typically don't, so although the habitat may appear acceptable, it very likely isn't.

Hahaha, yep, once you think you've figured them out there's always some way to surprise you. Things that don't work well with mycology are 1) assumptions, and 2) absolutes.
Regarding your pic, I see stuff like that a lot in between suitable habs. Like, a patch will be popping with azures and cyans, have a little break area where psathyrella grow, and then start growing again a little ways away. My best guess is its the patches migrating from suitable to unsuitable, and they pass over where the psathyrella grow. Occasionally I'll find one or two on the outskirts of psathyrellacae, but rarely do they get more than a few feet away from each other.
Your mileage, habitats and experiences will likely vary.
