Because China's power comes mostly from coal, electric cars take far longer to reach emissions offsets than countries with more balanced energy sources.

Unless the grid gets a massive overhaul, mass public transit is a thing, etc....we ain't gonna do shit because I have yet to see anything substantial, in most states.
In China you can buy a decent electric car for around $12,000, think electric car tariffs here are around 30%... innovation and modernization takes time, but it seems at best, this is lip service and the impetus is smokescreen.
It's not even possible for electric cars to replace gas powered vehicles. There's not enough lithium in the world.
Never heard that. But If true, I am sure innovation could replace lithium with something else or tap into unknown sources of lithium, no way that we have it all mined. Although I admire and work on combustion engines, they cannot be the pinnacle of tech transport.

Yeah, my bad... What I meant was that mining enough lithium to make electric cars a viable alternative is such a monumental task that it's nearly impossible, without utterly trashing the planet.
We can speculate about future technologies that might replace lithium batteries. I don't think lithium is a very palatable option, though.
Quote:
Ritchie’s estimations, based on data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), show that an electrified economy in 2030 will likely need anywhere from 250,000 to 450,000 tonnes of lithium. In 2021, the world produced only 105—not 105,000—tonnes. With the average lithium mine taking at least a few years to get up and running, we need to figure out how to get at this lithium quick.
This brings us to maybe the greatest challenge of the EV revolution: how to quickly mine lithium (to start the green tech revolution our planet desperately needs) while not leaving behind a litany of ecological disasters and human rights abuses in our wake.
Lithium mines use a lot of water—many thousands of gallons per minute, according to The New York Times—and groundwater contamination with antimony and arsenic are a real and persistent threat. Other side effects of lithium mines include biodiversity loss, soil erosion, and air quality degradation—and that doesn’t even include what moving mining operations to the ocean floor could do.

Not to mention wrong. The number he quotes, 105 tons is wrong on its face, as that wouldn't even cover Tesla's battery production (42000 tons in 21 by one account I've read)
Quote:
In 2021, the world produced only 105—not 105,000—tonnes.
This is what I mean when I say certain individuals here never even critically read what they quote. They find something that confirms their biases or comes from a favorite source, usually a peddler of garbage misinformation they have been suckered by. With any critical thinking skills at all, one easily realizes a global production of 105 tons of lithium is absurdly small for everything we use lithium for.

If that is not was meant, why was that what was written? You are the one who quoted it, so please explain how his written words are "not what he meant".

Kind of ironic, you're talking about my confirmation bias, while your confirmation bias is causing you to misunderstand what he was saying.
My quotation was messed up. My [ quote ]'s were in the wrong place.

Wait, so you are saying that you fucked up your quotes, and therefore you wrote that
Quote:
In 2021, the world produced only 105—not 105,000—tonnes.
?
If that is the case, you are completely wrong. How does that have anything to do with my "confirmation bias"? Learn to post intelligibly

You're both confused:

His original post had the wrong posters listed in the quotes. That's what I meant by his quotes were all fucked up. You pointed out that, on top of that, his information quoted is wrong. He thought you were misunderstanding my post about his quotes being fucked up. Now, you're misunderstanding his misunderstanding.

Ok fellas... Prediction time. I know it's early, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and just say that, unless they actually manage to keep Trump off the ballot in a few states for the general election, there's no way in HELL Biden is going to be re-elected. The Democrats may swap Newsom, or someone else in for Biden at the last minute, though... And maaaybe they have a shot.
I'm curious what Vegas has to say about it these days..
If Democrats lose to Trump TWICE... They really need to re-work their strategy. How fucking embarrassing.

Trump doesn't get embarrassed. The man has no shame.

Hmm... I dunno. I don't think they're embarrassed... Just angry. They certainly ought to be, if they lose to Biden.
I guess the point is.. This whole election is embarrassing.. for America. The real loser.

Eh. I'm 50/50. Biden is.. old. But I dunno that any Biden voters are looking back and thinking they made a mistake voting against Trump. There's a lot of noise about Israel/Palestine on the left right now.. but I dunno that most folks will remember that in 10 months.. Trump has a vocal base.. But I don't think his public perception has gotten better over time.
Domestically, I don't think Biden has made any big splashy moves that makes folks feel like their lives have gotten better. But things definitely feel more stable than our last memories of Trump in 2020.. and a big majority of folks look at the republicans and think "these dickheads took my right to an abortion away"
