...YET.

We don't know what the future holds for him.  If this were 2001, we could say the same thing about me, "Enlil dropped out of his theatre major and never finished any degrees."

I think that would be a fair criticism for you in 2001, then.

I refuse to judge people based on their future accomplishments, no matter how great those accomplishments might be. Mostly because, you know, they haven't actually accomplished them yet.

Only insofar as it's a fair criticism at all.  Do you really believe that dropping out of a theatre program says anything at all about a person's competence?  While I was a theatre major dropout, I taught university courses in theatre.

Cool.  Did you drop out because your grades sucked causing you to lose financial aid?

I didn't get financial aid.  I dropped out of a community college.  My grades were pretty bad, though.  I had to retake several failed classes when I went back to school later in life.  In fairness, however, the failed classes were because I dropped out.

Not by happenstance that alot dramas happen around a courthouse. Past all the legalese, I gather acting/presentation/demeanor is just as important.

Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.”

Acting being the key word, and the courtroom is your stage. I can see how those classes would benefit you a great deal.

If I was to compare two people, and the only things I knew about them was that one completed a theater major while the other dropped out, I would say the one that completed it was more competent overall.

Given additional information, I may change that assessment. For example, when it comes to nuclear engineering, I would say both are equally incompetent and the degree means very little.

Of course, for something that's a little less intensive yet still unrelated, like administrative jobs, I'd still say the one who completed the degree program is more competent. While they may not have a relevant degree, a degree also demonstrates the ability to sit still for four~ish years and absorb information well enough to pass a bunch of tests.

Yeah, I don't think we're going to agree on that at all. I don't think a degree says anything about a person's competence, work ethic, intelligence, or anything really.

Are you insinuating that anyone without a degree is a layman?

Given the specific conditions I laid out above, in which the only knowledge provided is the presence or lack of degree, yes.

I grant that some people may, through demonstrated excellence, be considered an authority and not a layman without a degree. Similarly, I grant that some people may, through sheer ineptitude, be considered a layman despite possessing a degree. However, both of those scenarios are outside of the scope of my argument.

Fundamentally, possession of a degree from an accredited University *is* a demonstration of excellence in a specific field, and should be treated as such until evidence to the contrary is provided.

The fancy piece of paper is largely worthless. However, that fancy piece of paper represents the trust and acceptance of demonstrated experts in the field. As such, a degree speaks to the knowledge and character of the person that possesses it. It means that someone was judged by their peers and found worthy in their eyes. That is the difference between a layman and an authority.

For now, I will avoid the specific differences between different kinds of degrees, which fall under the finer points of international law, as well as the problem of fraudulent or otherwise unaccredited universities. These may sow doubt about specific degrees from specific places, but not the concept of the degree as a whole.

A degree is in no way a demonstration of excellence. In fact, by definition, a degree indicates that someone has passed a curriculum of courses. At best, it indicates an average level of performance in those classes. In some cases, a below average performance counts as passing.

And this is significantly more than what a lack of degree entails. A below average performance among one's peers does not make one below average among the general population.

If we are to distinguish the types of degrees, the highest recognized form of degree, a doctorate, which I believe is the 19th level of education recognized by international law, places the holder of the degree as the absolute world authority on their very specific subject.
