Warning, don't buy cheap agar from ali express.
It is more likely gelatin. Gelss at lower temperature, stays stretchy and doesn't adhere well to glass/plastic petri

was just about to post this, I got the 500g from Aliexpress for $34.76 dunedinite linked in the original post. ~15 g to 500 mL of water has made a gloopy soft agar, hopefully it still works. When sliding the cooled petris I only slightly jerked them and the agar splashed up onto the lid

The china sourced gelatin listed as agar is rubbish for this hobbie. I still have my 500g of gelatin purchased on ebay lying around somewhere. Mycelium grows into the media and breaks it down causing colonized sections to liquefy. This food grade agar from the UK has proven to be of high quality. At 15g/l it'll set very firm.

I did some tests of the 'agar' from China. It is not agar and does not contain agarose beacause;
- It dissolves and gels well below 90°C
- It does not smell like seaweed (even lab grade stuff does), smells like animal.
I reckon its gelatin, or similar peptide mess. Sets like jelly. . .
Working on getting a refund from ali express. Wish me luck. . .

Yes I knew it wasn't agar when I opened it. Experimenting with it as a substitute wasn't worth the effort. Good luck with the refund.

At that price, we're better off buying telephone agar locally. . .
1.5% seems pretty firm with telephone. Is the stuff you linked to firmer?

I use Telephone, 20g/L.
I usually make 500ml batches, 10g agar, 5g light malt extract and I use distilled water, that way I always have a consistent pH.

Harvested a 60g shroom today, immediately made 6 agar clones
will see how the clones do in time!

Seems changeable. . . I read this wrong in the past and made 1.5% for both gel & nute. Which seems fine. Will try lowering to nute a little. . . Can’t hurt. . . Or can it?

I recently lowered my nutes in my last transfer, altough only slightly 8g lme to 500ml Distilled water, I haven't noticed much differece, so perhaps I'll lower it a little more too.

Anyone got a suggestion for coco coir? Nervous about buying bulk from the growshop in case it is buffered. Bunnings/Mitre10 is generally overpriced.
Anyone use peat instead? Stuff is cheap as chips here.

I’ve been buying from bunnings for $3.50ish for 650g
Found this works out less than $3/kg worth a look. I don’t need 25kg yet 😳

It appears that you ‘can’ use the aliexpress not agar-agar agar for cult. . .
Crazy
These are tissue clones from stipes. . .
Not going to use further though. . .
Aliexpress gave me my money back. . . Goooo ali!

Last month, just before going overseas for 3.5 weeks, I prepped a couple of bulk coir/manure tubs hoping they'd colonise and be ready to start fruiting by the time I came back. While I was away, there was no intervention whatsoever besides a thermostat regulating the temperature. This is what I discovered when I came back:
