A swell day for morel hunting in Washington. (PICS)
    #2627121 - 05/01/04 09:30 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Today I met up with Psilygirl and @cro for some morel hunting in the area around Cle Elum, WA.  We didn't hit the motherload, but definately scored enough for a prime dinner.  The weather today was spectacular, high around 80 without a cloud in the sky.  Here goes...

I've started a tradition of photographing my first find of the day.  Today's came out really nice.  In fact, it's one of my favorite pics of all time.  Here is a beautiful fully ripe specimen of Morchella elata...

Here is a neat photo of a shroom @cro found.  Some kind of false morel...

This is a river near our hunting spot.  See the cottonwood trees in the distance.  They provided good shade...The shade was key to our hunt.  The area was dry and without a substantial amount of shade, we would have came home empty handed.

Here is another nice shot of a morel growing next to a rock.

At the end of the day, I wanted to get a couple shots of the day's haul...Of course Psily and @cro found triple the amount of shrooms as me

My bag...

Psily and @cro's bag...

Overall it was a great day for hunting.  We struck out at a few locations after finding these but what the heck, you'll never find the ultimate patch without a little exploring.

And I finish with a word of warning for anyone planning on hunting in the forests of Washington.  1.  Wear a long sleeved shirt and long pants.  Even if it's 100 degrees out.  We made the mistake of wearing shorts and the shrubs and bushwhacking were very unpleasant.  Came home with many unwanted scratches.  2.  Bring bug spray if you attract mosquitos.  They were very hungry this morning and fortunately I had enough left to supply Psily and myself.  It would have been miserable without it.

Cheers all!

those are some nice morels dude, but i notice that they don't look like the morchella elata's we find in michigan.those have dark ridges and yellow pits they look cool as hell though.up here they have dark ridges with only slightly lighter color pits, not so yellow like that.some are tanish to brown.anyway nice find man happy hunting.i'll have pics of our morels up later today so you can see the difference.

Those are the most incredible pictures I have seen.

We had a great time picking, it's supposed to rain all this week...

Well here was our dinner last night, Morels a la DH, our first time cooking them, maybe a little overdone but they were great.

Peace - @cro

Leave it to Toxic to find the bug. I didn't even see that the first time I looked.

i had also never eaten them before, so cooking them up was sooo tasty!! (thanks DH!)

haha, yeah dude, the skeeters are relentless up there, bug spray is definitely a must.  ticks can be pretty bad sometimes too if you're hunting brushy spots, but I haven't had any for the past couple years.  that false morel almost looks like a young Gyromitra gigas to me, the cap is kind of weird for that species though and I can't really see the stem, could be something else.  Nice pics!

good to hear you guys liked the morel hunting, a bit different than the other ones eh  ?  It's nice to just get outta the city and wander through the woods up there aimlessly for a while though, especially on days like yesterday.  And if you can score some morels for eats when ya get back, it's hard to beat .  Yeh, the forecast is looking good too, I think a nice flush is on the way

Ohh man nice pics there stymee!! I really want some fresh morels again its been 2 years since i have seen any of those babies. Times were simpler back then....crashing through the underbrush along the yakima in the spring is not a bad way to be. Anyhow glad to see you guys are having fun down there picking away. Anyone ever catch them fruiting down here in the lowlands of the western slopes?
