Who uses an Alcahol soaked rag over pc in cooldown?
    #2627077 - 05/01/04 08:55 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I read in one of the teks that its important to put an alcahol saoked rag over the PC inlets when the pc is cooling down and sucking in. How many of you guys practice this? Cant the fumes be bad for growh? Ive been doing it anyways i just want to see if i should continue doing this or if theres a better way to do it.

I think its over kill.

Also i pull the weight right away, when the PC isnt really sucking anything in...I find if i let a vacuum form, the lid gets stuck...

I beleive if your pc creates a vacuum (the ones with the stopcock) then dirty air will be sucked into the pressure cooker. the alcohol(not alcahol) soaked rag over the vent would prevent any contaminated particles from entering when pressure returns to 1 psi. I hope this helped!

I can see the reasoning behind it,but really there is no need.Ive done many jars and many batches and never done this and I have never had a problem.

This is mentioned in GGMM. I do this sometimes, but not always. Actually, you want your PC to form a vacuum. During the whole cooling process (after pressure has dropped), air from outside the PC is getting sucked in. When you have a PC that can form a vacuum, the huge pressure fluctuation will kill any endospores that do get sucked in or survive the cooking process (at least that's what it says in GGMM).

Mine does not form a vacuum, so I sometimes place an alcohol rag over the ball, but it usually evaporates before it cools anyway...

My PC is the bobble weight type, it just has 2 valves that pop down and allows the air to bleed in. I normally take the PC and put it into the sink and fill the sink with cold water, this speeds up cooldown but does this allow for possible contams making it past the polyfill filter and foil? Now that i have my PC I havent had any contams. And i just made my first batch without using a soaked rag. Im just trying to see how sterile or slightly unsterile everything can and should be.

So your PC creates a sealed off vaccuum? When you open it does all the air rush into your PC, and jars quickly. Or is there a release valve you bleed off with so you can open it? If so then You could put a filter on the inlet valve if its adaptable. This should give you a 100% sterile PC without any extra work besides installing the filter unit.

Dont use cold water to cool it down ...this will drop the temp and can cause a vacumn drawing in possible contams...
For every temp increase there is a pressure increase and vica versa...basic heat theory 101

True, some could see this as over complication. But then again most of us take steps to maximize our potential, and minimize our risk. I am sure lots of people get away with open air grain transfers and agar work and consider a laminar flow hood unnecessary. Some people don't even use a pressure cooker and have nearly 100% success, even with grains, (a friend of mine is one). Over complication = insurance in my eyes.

Your results are not indicative of another person?s fate...

nope, nor are yours.I am simply stating my results and my opinion.I do use a flowhood,i dont think thats over complicating anything,i think thats a wise precaution. The pressure cooker idea that is being discusses,i can see the reasoningg behind it,but IMO its overkill.I put 2 layers of foil over my jar lids,so if a contam did get sucked through the PC,it would also have to make its way through 2 layers of foil, and if i am doing PF jars, also tape, and then finnally the dry verm layer.I think that is more than enough protection.
thats just in my experiance though.

I like doing the cool water cooldown because i can cooldown and refill my pc much faster. Then i drain my sink unload the jars into the sink and fill with new cool water with a 20 pieces of ice. I didnt time it but it cools them to room temp in about 1-2 hours with a shake or two to get the core temp out.

Exactly what I mean. Some people would think that you are over complicating things by placing two layers of foil on your jars. That is not to say that it is unnecessary (I sort of do the same thing, fold one layer in half, creating two). It is insurance just like the alcohol rag and the filter idea that grower posted...

Anything that would minimize your risks of contamination is not overkill, it is insurance...
