Got some "potent" ceremonial tobacco seeds in a trade here on Shroomery and this is my first time growing tobacco. I'm probably transplanting them way too early but annuals don't tend to like my usual DIY potting mix. I don't use tobacco but it's a very good bartering item to have and I know a few people who do smoke and they are very interested. This first year it just for seed production and a few leaves for someone to try. I'm surprised I didn't notice this thread sooner.
Pardon the gimped zinnas, they were in 2.25" pots far too long.

I see all the poppies and calendula. The tobacco plants in the background? Did you plant them? Best guess would be Nicotiana tabacum.

Nicotiana Rustica progress. The plants seem to have more of a "blank" smell and seem somewhat calming but other than that there is no smell to them? Very fuzzy and sticky. Hornworms have been chewing holes in the leaves and I've killed dozens of them now.
I smoked one of the cured leaves from my barn and all it gave me was a scratchy throat. I don't smoke so maybe I'm doing it wrong? In hind sight my head feels like it's trying to float upward but it may just be placebo.

Gunna harvest my this N. Rustica today. Not doing cigarette leaves yet but going to try my hand on curing some wraps. I've never done it before and since this summer wasn't as smokey I actually got some nice 3'-4' tall plants and big canoe paddle base leaves. Here's some pics of the plants. I'll drop a link to my journal if I find the energy to log that cure.

Indeed. I was going to wait until the leaves started to turn yellow but some black gnats were really sucking on the leaves and leaving specks everywhere so I also harvested everything today. Not sure what I'll do for a fermentation chamber but that can wait; the leaves won't suffer damage just sitting in the barn.
5-6 leaves per bundle w/ rubber band, split the bundle over the string.

Aw I did the same! For my fermantaion chamber I'll use a paper bag on its side since I dont have enough to make a "brick" to ferment in. Also going to add some real licorice flavoring for a good sweet flavor.
Im going to cut and cure my cigarette tobacco this weekend or the following.

Got some rustica seeds via trade just recently, looking forward to growing this coming season. Tried to grow some N. sylvestris this year but started way to late, killed most of it due to inexperience…now I know though, next year it’s on.

ye man next year is gonna be tits for sure. we have really got to build this soil up this shit sucks the life out of it. i think tobacco is one of the most water and fertilizer intensive crops there is they are worse than corn i bet they would suck the whole creek dry if you let em found some sylvestris the other day in a park and got a couple ripe seed pods so now i think i have 8 species among those 10 or 11 total cultivars in the seed bank. its a mess back there dont think most will even flower. theres a really special one i wanted to show you guys with long dark narrow sticky leaves that smells like sweaty feet but it hasnt shown itself yet and theres a few more that have been evading us in the desert hang tight
the yearling is from the old man bobby, they went feral behind his house for a few years. might be a good smoking strain i like that it doesnt get tall. been in the ground all summer its like 3.5 ft tall
