blacklights
    #2626699 - 05/01/04 05:45 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Has anyone tried or read any studies of using a blacklight in any stage of the production of mushrooms? I know that they like light in the near blue region and I was just wondering if adding a blacklight might have some effect on growth. I also believe that you can use a blacklight to see if you have contams in a jar. I have a jar that I am fairly confident is contamed, I believe there is some sort of bacterial contam in the bottom of the jar. This jar was innoculated with others and the rest have completed, but this one has stalled at the bottom and it appears to be a bit wet looking. Most of the slime-type substance I believe is starch that wasn't removed in the processing of the cracked corn. I took my blacklight and observed the cakes and this one has some spots in the bottom that appear dark green when the blacklight is on it, however in normal light it doesnt appear at all. I believe that these spots to be some sort of bacterial contam.

Do a search. I think the verdict is that UV causes mutations at least during the fruiting stage

if you give it UV and it mutates... is there a chance of getting uber potent shrooms out of it?? or at least the children of the mutants?? if so thats my goal in life

Hehe, we should be so lucky.  UV light is an ionizing radiation so it's going to cause point mutations in the DNA (i.e. a cytosine will be changed to guanine).  These types of mutations for the most part will only inactivate genes.  If you're lucky you might mutate a trancriptional control element, in which case the mushroom might upregulate the production of the enzymes needed to generate psilocybin, but this is so improbable you'd have to grow shrooms for centuries to get decent odds.  All we really need is a molecular biologist to splice the necessary genes into E. coli or yeast or something and then we'd have psil producing yeast.  Imagine using this yeast to make magic blue beer!
