I really doubt it's the lids unless the poly is quite loose. Poly is fine and works as good as any other lid, lids upside down (seal side up) are fine.  Is your PC accurately reading pressure? Boog had similar issues and it turned out his pressure gauge was off and he couldn't tell because he has quarters weighing down his rocker to keep it from hissing.

How would you know/test this? I have quarters on my rocker, but it seems to be fine. It's less than 6 months old, so it'd have to be a manufacture problem if it is.

I would take the quarters off n see if it rocks at 15psi

Assuming its a Presto 23 Qt….With 3 quarters on the rocker, mine starts to rock about 17.5psi. Between 15-17psi it vents some, but doesn't rock it.

If yours does the same, then your gauge works.

Mine doesn't "rock" but it def gets to a point around 17 psi where I can hear steam escaping. I have 2 quarters on mine because that got it to where I don't hear it when I turn the stove down and it stays over 15psi.

I'll take the quarters off and test it next time

So, I'm cross posting from another thread where I was trying to isolate my contam problems and was looking at grains:

First off, it wasn't just bacteria that was coming through on my oats... lots of aspergillius too. Here's the results of a bit over two months of waiting. Around 8/12/19 I PC'd 6 jars worth of oats. I also left two others un-PC'd as a control jars just to see what would happen to those.

So, above are the 4 out of 6 jars that contaminated. It looks like I have two different kinds of aspergillis in there (yellow and green/gray), as well as bacteria. Here's some close ups:

2 out of four of my jars seem totally fine:

The process involved using standard lids inverted with poly-fill GE filters covered in aluminum foil. I PC'd 2 hours at 15+ psi, with proper venting and cool down times. The jars were unloaded from the PC and screwed tight, and stored in my "lab" (the closet with my FH that I keep cleaner than the rest of my place) for a bit over two months. I never even took off the aluminum foil:

Last time I checked was about 2-3 weeks ago and there was nothing going with the oats, all looked good. I was starting to feel like I had made an idiot of myself. Then I went to finally just empty them out last weekend and WOWZA look at that shit!

So, you may be wondering, couldn't I have just had some problems with contam from the outside? Yes, possible, however I kept these jars from below in my kitchen as "control" jars:

Quote:

ShaperDreaming said:
Nonetheless I went back to look at the jars that had been sitting almost completely undisturbed for 4 days. They looked like this:

Here's what they look like now:

They've been sporing black since they started to show non-bacterial contams. This makes me think that the contams in my apartment air are different than what happened in the PC'd jars.

Is this definitive science? No. But does it support that my problems were coming from my oats, and I 100% recommend that other people create some test jars for their grains!

I think this may just have been my most recent bag of oats that I was using, but it's enough to scare me away from the grain completely. Makes me feel like I've been  :idigit:

My grains have been going green if I don’t inoculate straight away

Is it part of the time of year perhaps?

hey there yall.. so i think i have like 13 receivers left from the plate these tubs came from, and im a bit worried that they are seriously bacterial... If anyone would lke to answer, i have 2 questions:
How common is it for pinning to occur before full colonization of coir?
Could that white mass just be mycelium? Alot of the water from the sides have been dripping down onto that one big spot, is it possible that it's just getting heavily hydrating and causing the myc to thrive? Im obviously reaching with that one, and i've already removerd the tub in question from the lab and set it in my room so i can monitor it a little closer. The first tub looks fine other than the fact there is almost NO surface colonization and it's already pinnning... no weird colors or smells or ugly looking mycelium.. Thanks in advance for any answers, here they are

Also to the person above me: nah if your filters and sterilization process is on point you shouldnt be seeing mold before inoculation. Thats either a filter or PC problem  or even more unlikely, a grain prep problem but thats pretty far fetched as the PC should level everything to the same degree of sterility no matter how it was prepped.

You need to pressure cook your grains.
Use a filter or no mod lids

If you used a top layer of coir it can be common as it acts like a casing layer.
What I do is keep about a half inch of liner above the substrate and will fold this away from the walls toward the sub so condensation runs behind the substrate and not on it

Yeah these two tubs are just coir and verm. Thats definitely bacteria, if not mold, in the first pic right? I didnt actually think that extra water in one spot would cause it to thrive in that one spot, i guess i assumed the mycelium would absorb and diffuse it to the rest of the organism? Im going to harvest it if it doesnt abort first but i wont be cloning or printing any of them, this was going to be the last generation of this culture anyways (this specific culture is on f3 now with no reversion back to spores so i assume it's on it's last leg)

Yes that's mold, bacteria is not much of a threat to a bulk sub.

Gotcha thank you. Last question i promise:

Is it possible that the mold was exacerbated by excess water on the tub walls? OBviously my spawn wasnt completely clean and in no way am i blaming the moisture, but excess water doesnt help right? Also is it possible to be white and sporulating? I moved it pretty swiftly and now im bugging about the spores being everywhere... Ugh i spoke too soon on my contam rate...

Who's this directed at? Pretty sure no one is trying to steam grains, so I'm confused.

Early pinning (before full colonization) is a pretty solid indicator of contam coming if it also includes pinning that won't produce an even flush. So, if you're getting a few spotty/patchy pins with new ones every few days, you're in for contam.

If you used a casing layer, as stated by cronicr, it can happen more often depending on the variety, but I've seen it a few times.

It can help mold along, yes. Any environmental condition that is outside of the range of what cubes like best is likely better for something else that can exploit it, like mold. But the mold itself came from your spawn.

And, don't even fret about the spores. I "cut out" the mold on bins that have solid pinsets that will flush (which yours looks like it will). It doesn't do much but buy you time. I also put that bin in a different room. You'll be fine.

If you have pins already just pour a little isopropyl  over it and isolate it from your work area, sometimes you can still squeeze a meager flush out of it. Don’t get overly worried about spore load in the house I’ve had a couple bad trich explosions, garden lits and hve a bunch of dogs and dirty hippies in my house all the time and I can pull off a grow just fine still. Its only really an issue if youre using unmodified lids or if your spawn is always iffy/weak from bacteria etc. just clean your work space and house thoroughly on a regular basis(mostly because its disgusting if you dont) and relax knowing your clean spawn will be resistant to it.

Just too a closer look, its turning green :frown: aghhhh this is what i get for trying to use tap water coir... I know everyone says pastuerization is redundant for just coir, but i have a solid feeling that if i pastuerized i would have gotten a couple more days before it showed. Im nearly positive my spawn was questionable. I wouldnt really care if it werent so early, i dont think these pins are even going to mature :frown: would peroxide afford me a couple more days so i can get at least something off this tub?

It's obviously not the end of the world and i wouldnt be hurt about throwing it out, i just would really like to be able to get at least 1 harvest off of each of the 6 tubs i have that have all pinned already, not even 14 days from spawning... I think its been 10 days since spawning.

Also shaper, yeah i moved it to my bedroom. I dont think it will affect the other tubs, as none of them are showing any signs of odd or discolored myc, just early pinning.

Thanks for the advice shaper, cron, and ayeplus!! ill be posting some canopies and rustywhytes here ina  few daysd as long as the rest of the tubs dont tam out.

  • Take a cup/jar/bowl/whatever that's slightly larger than the mold contam.
  • Put it over the mold contam and push down to the bottom, then twist.
  • Pull up the full coir all the way down that contains the green monster.
  • Throw out the "core sample" of mold, preferably directly outside.

This will get you to first flush. You can pour peroxide over it before the above steps to help too. Just get it out of there until your flush, then toss the sub.

How are we looking today? First grow, anxiously awaiting pins. A bit worried about the green spot in the big tub, should I excise that?
