Any Other Classic/Retro Gamers on Shroomery? * 1
    #26251100 - 10/14/19 05:06 AM (4 years, 3 months ago)

Plenty of discussion on newer stuff; how about classic stuff like NES, SNES, Genesis, etc? Who else grew up in the 90's with this stuff, and still enjoys it from time to time? I got my NES working and have been playing tons of Legend of Zelda. Shit is timeless.

I love retro games. Though for me the ultimate are the PS1 final fantasy and also snes rpgs are awesome. I prolly like retro games (of that era at least) more than most modern stuff.

When i remember a good, old dos game, like Jazz Jackrabbit comes to mind, i will dl and dosbox it.

Theres this awesome cult classic comedy rpg called Kingdom O Magic and you really can only play it on dos (i did manage to make it work in small screen on dosbox, and someone made a remake demo with like the first part of the game thatll work on modern windows).

Its the best. Pulp fiction jokes and a semi open world its just freakin amazing. You also pick your protagonist, a lizard or this medieval chick, and there are like 4 diff adventures (kinda like RE2 and the 4 diff campaigns)

The PS1 is excellent. I just refurbished on a friend gave me that was all beat up. Works great! I just need controllers, games, etc. now.

I've got mostly NES and Genesis stuff at the moment.

I mostly just use my laptop pc with emulators and an xbox 360 controller. Works really well for almost all consoles!

Def esp ps1 rpgs like FF7, FF8, FF9, Persona, Xenogears, etc etc
And soooo many snes rpgs, and a couple of genesis

Yes sir! TJ&E was my favorite Genesis game, especially the second one. I grew up with that big time! Castlevania is one of my most cherished series. I have Crystalis for the GBC! Link's Adventure, Zelda II, correct? Classic! The other three are must haves as well. The first two I've actually never played much of!

Currently bouncing between the OG Zelda on the NES and A Link to the Past - my favorite game of all time - on the SNES (emulated).

I really like the modern Zelda game actually, for switch. As much as i like old school stuff. Its really hard to top Link to the Past and IMO Links Awakening is sick too. Actually the new one is like a mix of Zelda 2 (nes) and Skyrim IMO

But two of my fav "defunct" systems: dreamcast and gamecube, which btw i do find to be similar. DC was way ahead of its time. Ive played most of the DC games. I remember when they had Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament, online play with no lag on a console with 56k modem. Freakin amazing. I remember how fun it was doing team dm with real people for the first time on a console. If you wanted to play Doom, Command and Conquer or Hexen online youd need an individual IP and all that back then

Not to mention gems like shenmue 1+2, Maken X, Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure, Grandia II, skies of arcadia (those two i miss most, gotta revisit, just playing too many rpgs at once

FF7 and FF15 on PS4, FF9 on switch. Also playing Tactics.  FF12 on queue, Kingdom Hearts 1+2 collection (never finished either) And also slowly going through RDR2 when i have time.

But i also enjoy oldies like Diablo 1 and 2, Age of Empires..and if anyone here uses dosbox to play Kingdom O Magic you wont regret it (its also ahead of its time and unique for a 1996 game), it plays like open world Monkey Island with rpg elements, and a hell of a sense of humor. Theres even a black prince that thinks hes samuel L jackson and quotes pulp fiction

Basic style of the gameplay

But this game is no lucasarts ScummVM, if anything its a satire of those. Also you can fight anyone and you have levels and hp. And the humor still hasnt been topped IMO

OLD games i like: warcraft 2/starcraft, xcom series, diablo 1, gabriel knight series, all the chrono trigger era snes rpgs (ALOT of more obscure ones like Terranigma), all the genesis phantasy star and shining force games, and sometimes ill just play straight up MUDs and get sucked into MMO text adventure (the more popular free ones have like 300+ players at a time, Aardwolf is the most simple to start with)

WC1 was cool but i found the GUI to be pretty annoying. WC2 got the controls down pretty well

Whats so funny about Kingdom o Magic? Its a sick fucking game. I was listing a whole lot of classics i enjoy, and that one is near/at the top due to both nostalgic value and just a real fun adventure. Kinda like a playable Monty Python rpg/adventure from 1996

Yeah, the classics are pretty much the only games I play. It's about more than just the game though, it's also the whole nostalgia thing. Playing old games takes me back to when I was a teenager or a kid, it's a good feeling.

It's the same reason I enjoy anime: it reminds me of all my teenage years, really takes me back and makes me feel young again, and lets me lightly relive my teenage years. Same with games.

Its def not just you, look at all the many many modern games now using HD pixel dos-like graphics. And yes i miss that. Was playing Jazz Jackrabbit the other day and realized its prob more fun than Sonic!

Emulation. I have every console ever! Lol. With a controller its basically the same. I would never have been able to afford the real neogeo (was insanely priced and games too, since it was all based on arcade tech). But neo geo emu is Awesome! Press 5 to insert coin and away you go on your retro journey. Nebula is a great one because it can emulate CPS2 as well as neo geo. And i have a namco emulator where arcade tekken 2 works perfectly

My two fav consoles to emulate tho have to be snes and ps1 (both mainly for the rpgs)
Playing forgotten Dreamcast gems is awesome too

I actually dont. My friend has one of those blackmarket xbox things with every system on there as well and basically every rom. Besides taking care of cartridges and cd's, it literally is the exact same thing assuming it works at 100% (and these days, thats not an issue for like a 3mb snes rom)

Though myself im good with just a laptop and 360 controller.

Sure its nostlagic to whip out a decades old SNES, but getting the games and stuff together, making sure they all still work, i really am very content with emulation on a strong processor. Also, if youre one of those people that likes to collect comics and keep them in the original package, i can see why "it wouldnt be the same" but thats a perspective thing, the games play just as well

The only thing that can detract is if youre not using a good controller. i feel a typical x360 controller works well for every system ive emu'd so far, including arcade.

And btw, THAT might be the one thing where the experience at a real arcade is better. Other than that, really, whats the difference?

To me emulators are a way to keep gaming history alive and modern. Is it any better when nintendo releases Earthbound again for $5-10 (which btw i bought for on the go) and its still the same game youd emulate? In fact it is emulated

I can see that being true maybe with like n64, for example Goldeneye split screen games, but thats partially because N64 had a unique type of controller. Nintendo added personality to their systems, and yeah i mean, dreamcast was sleek and nice, but realistically, most people's consoles break down over time as they get more and more outdated, you lose games, etc.

I guess if you care for your games, like i said, like comics. But i know allllll these freakin games for all systems, bought em at some point, or at least played them, and when you can have a whole emu library to keep em alive, i think thats a great thing.

The day i discovered emu it was mostly for snes and gba, and dammnnn i was so happy to play FF6, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, tried to get into Pokemon. But man i was so happy you could just download and play all those games, i still kinda feel that way

Who is into retro (at this point, like up to ps1, even ps2, but way before also) rpgs?

What do you mean by mini systems? Do you mean like third party dreamcasts and such? Or what

About companies other than sega that decide to literally emulate the hardware of saturn, dreamcast, gamecube, whatever, i think thats a good alternative since its hard to find some of those systems now and they work like the originals from the couple that i tried. Cause otherwise thered be no new retro consoles being made

The ones that actually play the same games, same controllers, etc. thats i guess hardware emulation rather than software

Edit: oh you mean the same thing but tiny versions made by the real companies. Never tried one. Probably a lot more expensive than a third party. Those unofficial ones run perfectly from what ive seen so it seems like a cash grab.

Also how many times will they re-release FF7 and all the Zelda games, again banking on emulation

I still have every one of my old systems and they are all in working order. I also have emulators BUT I find when I have the urge to say play a snes game ill just break out my system over the computer

oh yeah its cool. I dont need them as I have the originals but if I didnt have the originals I 100% would own the minis.

My first gaming system was an atari... Or maybe it was calecovision.

But yeah, was pretty much born a gamer lol

I remember being blown away by the graphics on the NES when it came out, if I could go back in time and show me what kinda shit we got goin on now, I'm pretty sure it would melt my face right off.

One game that really sticks out in my memory to this day was E.T. For atari... I fucking hated it so bad, but I'd play it anyway, hoping some day I'd actually figure out wtf was going on, seriously one of the worst games ever made to this day.

And pilotwings for snes, omfg I loved that game... I would do the skydiving shit for hours.

Then mortal kombat and street fighter 2 hit the arcades, my mom would go to the bar and drink every night with her boyfriend at the pub witch happened to be in the mall, the arcade was pretty much right next door, they'd just throw me 20's to keep me busy lol, the amount of qaurters I put in those two machines would prolly equal a small fortune.

Hey I finally found a thread that will allow my oldness to function as an asset!  Woohoo!  I play zero games (haven't since like... PS2... and then only like three times and before that not since like... SNES...  I remember cracking the NES box when it came out in 1988 or whatever and thinking I'd seen all the things.  Lately I have the alarmingly strong desire to play FFIII and Chrono Trigger.  Someone is going back to the future when he gets some cash...    :awegroove:

I found a working Calecovision system abandoned in a trailer I was paid to clean out maybe 10 years ago.  Had the steering wheel control.  Gave it to the guy I hired to help and am still kicking myself.

I recently was replaying FFIII (the snes FF6 in US, since theres also the only recently released nes "acual FF3" which was made into a 3D remake. Its on all mobile platforms, prolly nintendo consoles and im sure others. But im talking about what is actually FF6). Was playing it and got past the whole world shift and basically 90% to the end, but i couldnt figure out where to go next. It was on an ipad and taking up alot of space so i ended up deleting it and losing my save game. Playing Final Fantasy Tactics and Baldurs Gate on mobile currently. Revisiting FF7 8 and 9.

Anybody get into Xenogears for ps1? Id say one of the best rpgs ever.

the best modern rpg ive seen for a while would have to be Persona 5. I consider it near-masterpiece level and its not a ripoff of anything. Its like a life sim plus dungeon crawler, where you cant even beat the dungeon in 1 or 2 tries, theres a calender of like 10-20 days by which you have to beat each boss. Make your way to checkpoints, then retreat back to town, stock up on items which are restocked like once a week

The first console i played was also Atari. I didnt own one but my neighbor downstairs when i was like 6 did. Then i got my NES and Super Mario Bros 3, that was the start of my gaming

My first PC was a 486 with windows 3.1 and a 50mb hard drive, which was enough at the time, most progs were prob below 1mb. The most intensive stuff at the time would have been Doom, i dont think a .wad is more than like 1-2mb

Oh shit ya, me too... I didn't own one but my buddy did, Mario 64 is still one of my favorite games of all time, that shit was crazy seeing it the first time, even though I was somewhat desensitized to the crazy 3d graphics from owning a ps1

I remember how insane the graphics on starfox for SNES was, those polygons were absolutely jaw dropping at the time... I recently got to play it at my my buddies house after like 20+ years while on mushrooms, I was gobsmacked by how far we've come lol.. Those were like cutting edge graphics at the time.

You wanna play something while tripping thats still just a regular game that goes full on psychedelic?

Turn on GTA San Andreas. Dose acid, mesc, or best of all 2ce. (Shrooms work too but at more visual doses its hard to play videogames, imo, this was always done with 2ce for me, because youre still clear-headed, and my friends discovered this little trick)

Now get on a bike, and keep driving down the highway.

You will see what happens. Dont crash the bike, just keep driving down the highway until its hyperspace. Full speed, no stops

A very different trippy fav of mine was mario sunshine. Just to bask in the beauty. But usually once i fully come up, if its a tryptamine, videogames become hard to play.

Its a fucking great one. Probably the best Zelda game tho i also love Link's Awakening and Ocarina in 3D. If you like that btw, ever check out the (original) Alundra for PS1? Its a spiritual successor to Landstalker (Gen) but plays just like a more mature zelda with some real tough puzzles and more adult content. I know they made Alundra 2 but it looked so different i never gave it a chance

ALTTP is my favorite Zelda title, hands down. Certainly a bias, won't deny lol. I actually really, really enjoy the original as well. Same with Zelda II on the NES; very unique title regardless of the franchise it belongs to. That one took some time to yield its magic.

Ocarina used to be my favorite. Link's Awakening is great. I actually think I prefer Oracle of Seasons the best on the GameBoy Color as far as those ones go. Minish Cap was AWESOME on the GBA! I'm totally a Zelda fan boi.

I love zelda. And i LOVE Zelda II: Link's Adventure, which is way underrated cause of the 2d thing. But i really suggest for you to also check out Alundra. Youd prolly love it. I know i did, precisely because of A Link To The Past. This game works very well with epsxe if you dont have a ps1

And the original, Landstalker, for genesis (not pictured) youd prolly like too

Thats part of the town in Alundra. It has one main town center like Diablo and the rest of the world is unexplored and is gradually opened up as you get items like shit that can lift boulders, etc. ya know, same type of thing as Link to the Past. But theres more murder and mystery and id say its a more difficult game, in a good way. Some real mindfucking puzzles. I had to whip out a walkthrough for one part that i was stuck on for like a month (i really try not to)

Master System was just before my time; I never had any relatives, neighbors, or school mates that had one! Everyone still had the NES, and the obvious SNES and Genesis by the time I was coming to, lol. I got my first home console, the model 2 Sega Genesis, in early 1994.

Before that I just played everyone else's! :sunny:

I DID however get a Sega Saturn for Christmas '96. Everyone had Playstation. I wanted the Saturn. Had some of the same games, plus SEGA exclusives, which I was a fanboi for. I'm so glad I went with the Saturn, because PS1 shit is so much easier to find/more affordable than the Saturn shit these days!

This is where the retro gamers be at. Hi everyone

I fucking love retro.

I just finished The Legend of Zelda the Oracle of Ages again. I know it's not the most popular game in the series but it's my personal favourite, closely followed by Link's Awakening. God the new remake for Switch makes me want to buy a Switch!

Alundra is on my todo list right now too. It's in my rom library but i have so many roms too, some i know are good games and want to replay and many i want to play for the first time. I still haven't gotten around to Alundra yet.
Heres a long video that talks about hw fucking awesome it really is. If you don't have a lot of time, just watch a little. That's what i did. It'll show how cool (and frustrating) this game may be.

I'm super keen for it (when i'm in the right mood).
If you ever begin playing it, it'd be cool to start playing it too so we could talk about it and stuff. No rush though, i have a million other games i want to play too. If you don't want to, that's cool too man, no pressure, games are about enjoyment, so if you wouldn't enjoy that setting i'd understand.

Classic Reload is cool. I need to get Kingdom O Magic (96 Dos game that satires pulp fiction and all sorts of cool shit, with a big open world, many characters, just an awesome adventure) to work again. Out of ALL the old dos games that’s the one I really want to play. Though in 96 it could have come out for windows. It’s notoriously hard to get working, was even harder with older versions of windows. I got Dosbox to run it in small screen once after like an hour of trying commands and different ways of mounting the cd etc. on the other hand, many games work real easily with dosbox. Gonna give it another shot

PS: when it comes to Dos, I care! I truly love playing the classics. I even play MUDs, don’t know any irl friends who are even into those in 2019. To them, classic is WoW Lich King. Which also is fun to play on private servers but nowadays there are so many copycats anyway

And I love Chrono Trigger. I actually really liked Chrono Cross too but obv it’s not of the same caliber. I think someone was making a true CT snes rom-hack sequel but were told to cease and desist.

As far as Alundra I feel like im gonna play through it again after many many years and maybe gonna give Alundra 2 a shot. And the frustrating parts in Alundra1 are most definitely the puzzles midway through the game, they’re really tough sometimes. I got to a point where it was essentially impossible without a walkthrough during my initial play through long ago (I try to not cheat, but was absolutely stuck)

I never got to play Cross sadly. Been meaning to buy a copy because for some reason its a pretty weird one to get all things working correctly when emulated.

And the cease and desist game was called Chrono Resurrection. full 3D remake. I followed that from beginning to end and I am STILL so pissed about it

KI was fun at the time. When I revisit it I find it’s basically a mortal kombat clone. But as with GTA now, MK back then was often cloned. Games like Primal Rage come to mind. I miss the Simpsons Arcade Game! For a while they weren’t making any beat em up games like Simpsons or Golden Axe. Luckily that’s changed now with games like Yakuza and Sleeping Dogs, both open world beat em ups. So the genre has not just revived but advanced.

Mostly I’m into rpgs, particularly jrpgs of the ps1 era (snes as well). I think besides the FF games, I find the best rpg for ps1 to be Xenogears. Also criminally underrated. Huge, long game with great story, gigantic world map, anime, and a combat system that plays a like a turn based fighting game. Another one that gets forgotten at times is Star Ocean. I also love Persona which actually has gotten more popular lately with 5 and the 3DS releases

Apparently was always popular in Japan. I blame the first game’s Americanization, changing the whole environment to better fit the US.

Parasite Eve was a great one too, so many amazing ps1 rpgs

I also do love the western OG rpgs. Morrowind, Baldur, Planescape Torment, Fallout 2, tons of em

Yes everything was indeed an MK clone, but that's because that shit moved units! It only makes sense. Some of those games were god awful; ClayFighter 63 1/2 LOL. Primal Rage was ok on  the Saturn from my memory. What was that other one that had fatalities on the N64, War Gods I think (Kabuki Joe or some shit LOL). Simpson's arcade ruled! I enjoyed Tekken and Virtua Fighter a bit, but nowhere near as much as MK 1-UMK3.

The PS1 was a MONSTER for RPGs! Arguably the single-best console for them. I refurbished a beat up, tarnished PS1 this past summer and I just need a controller and memory card. Those are easy enough to find these days. Never owned Xenogears but I need to play it!

Ever play Ogre Battle on SNES/PS1, Fractal420?

oh shit Clayfighters! I remember even just loving the snes original. That was like the “Saint’s Row 3” of MK. Absurd and lots of fun

The N64 one was good too.

I played Tactics Ogre, if that’s at all the same thing (Japanese rename?}. Are those different games? I like the whole Tactical RPG genre. Vandal Hearts was a great one that is easily forgotten it seems. I like that one more than FF Tactics prolly or at least on par.

And the Genesis Shining series would fall under that category too

Anyone remember the old arcade fighting game.. Fuck what was it now... Had something to do with time..

But basically you could hack off peoples limbs and decapitate them mid match, it was cool because even if you just lost an arm you could keep fighting.. Came out around the same time as the mortal kombat/street fighter 2 hey day.

Ah yes, 'time killers'... Had to do a bit of googlemancy for that one lol

But ya, 12 year old me thought it was absolutely insane.. Which it kind of was I guess

I would always pick the mohawk guy with the chainsaw.

Kirby’s Dreamland for NES, SNES and Gameboy also Kirby Crystal Shards for N64

SNES Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose

The original Golden Sun for GBA

Street Fighter Alpha III At the arcade I beat M. Bison but not the two fighter which appear simultaneously on same stage right after him.  But credits did roll

For PC, Croc 2: Legend of the Gobbos

PC - Goosebumps: Escape from Horrorland (1996)
Used to rock this joint with my cousin being chased through town through the park with the bushes blurring by then just the puddles of that pale red blood and getting trapped in a maze having to escape from being chased again by what? You guessed it!? A giant werewolf and it is especially bloodthirsty.  Figuring out what happened to the towns people isn’t an easy mystery.  Not sure if there was a giant rat, but definitely a werewolf and you can see that beast around the corner with those big feet that big smiling head and those gigantic hands with nails on those fingertips

Speaking of older, awesome fighting games, I wish they made more games like Power Stone for DC, that was just fucking amazing! IMO that whole console was just so ahead of its time (and competing with ps1 and n64, so it was way, way, more powerful). Hell it allowed for Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament online multiplayer, on a 56k modem! And there was magically almost Zero lag, I couldn’t believe it.

Croc/Croc2 was pretty cool. I really like the Gex games, it was just like mario64 with nonstop movie references. Came out the same time as Croc, so I remember picking one, I went with Gex due to the more open world

But yeah, I think Link to the Past was one of the first games to really explore the open world mechanic

Anyone play anything multiplayer lately? I have PC, PS4, Switch. Hell even mobile. They made Call of Duty free to play on mobile, and I will say it’s a blast with no forced spending or wait times. Id say it’s fully functional and def worth a try.

All great games!

Anyone remember Golden Sun on the GBA? Those two titles were excellent. Always stood out to me for on the go RPGs.

Playing the shit out of Mega Man X on the SNES this morning.

I do.. But I'm on xbox... I have a tablet but it's a $40 piece of shit from wal-mart, it really fucking struggles with even the easiest apps lol, I can't even imagine trying to game on it, half the time it doesn't even register my touch, it's really a sad piece of shit

I'm thinking of maybe building a gaming rig this year tho if my budget will allow it, but so far that's lookin a little iffy, I'm so fucking far behind on rent and child support it makes me want to cry 😥

As for dreamcast, I barely remember it... My friend had one but couldn't really find games for it around our parts, once I got a ps1 we never really looked back.. I can't remember the name of the name of it but there was a sick racing game we used to play on DC, think it was 'daytona usa' or something like that, other than that one game nothing really sticks in my mind from that system... I do remember being blown away by the graphics at the time though.

Anyone remember the '3DO'?... Shit I remember when that came out my poor little 13 year old mind was blown to shreds by the graphics on that thing, too bad the games mostly sucked tho.

Lookin back to those days it'd be nice to have more competition along side the big 3 again... I remember the 'turbo graphx 16', way ahead of it's time, the 16 bits at that point was fucking amazing, had some sweet games too. Then the snes/genesis came out and it kinda just disappeared

I remember 3DO and when it came out, and it quickly went bust but I recall a ps1-like system with cd rom support, I guess they just didn’t release many games.

My fav “failed” system is prolly NeoGeo, mostly cause it was all arcade games. And it’s great to emu

I hear that at the time, a single game could be in the hundreds! And I think it was something like $600 for the system

I wonder how much a Time Crisis arcade machine would run, I prolly wouldn’t buy it, but I spent many many quarters with that game. I like the foot-controlled-duck/reload. I never really played the real PS1 version, but I’ve emulated TC and Point Blank, awesome games!

What was that arcade shooter where you had a shotgun instead of a pistol and it was horror themed? Crypt Killer or something? That was some pre-House of the Dead fun

I never had one, but I would emu it, was great, like an unlimited coin arcade machine

MAME has much wider compatibility but NeoGeo can be emulated real easy, same with capcom’s CPS2 (Marvel vs Capcom etc). I also found an emulator for namco arcade games like Tekken 2/3 and Sega arcade games as well.

NeoGeo has some real fun coop games. I also really like Samurai Showdown

I’d love a Time Crisis machine or Point Blank, they’re really fun even on psx emu

Oh dude, Samurai showdown was the tits! :awesomenod:.. Pretty sure I played it on ps1, or maybe even snes?.. But upon reading the wiki about it, couldn't have been SNES as I distinctly remember cutting people in half and shit, which was apparently censored in that version.

I didn't realize neogeo did coop stuff.. Wasn't it pretty much all fighting games?, that's all I can remember from neogeo anyway.

To be honest, I never really liked any of the megaman games, even as a kid... Mind you, I think I only played the first 3... but yeah, never cared for it much.

Same with metroid.. It was all the rage back then, but I was always just kinda 'meh' about it.. Castlevania too

NeoGeo has a pretty damn vast library, I think with the fighting games you may be thinking of CPS2? (All the X-men VS street fighter, marvel vs capcom type games)

NeoGeo actually only has a few well known fighting series, mostly Samurai Showdown and the King of Fighters series, but there are so many basically unknown fun coop games. Especially platform shooters and beat em ups. I recommend trying out some random roms, you may find some gems.

I like how NeoGeo arcade is easy to emu with stuff like NeoRageX, you don’t have to update roms like with mame

And you can switch from actual arcade coin mode to console mode with lives etc. it would be an awesome system to have but I recall something like $600 and $200 per game due to it basically being a mini arcade

I’m gonna check out my rom collection today prolly and recommend some good neogeo games

Btw, as far as mega man: I played 2 and 3 as a kid, eventually got most of the NES mega man games. I never beat any of them, but got far in some. I remember MM2 was really tough, and when you beat all the bosses you’d have to fight them again in some impossible End game levels.

On the other hand, I love how much fun Mega Man X and sequels are

To be honest, I never really liked any of the megaman games, even as a kid... Mind you, I think I only played the first 3... but yeah, never cared for it much.

Same with metroid.. It was all the rage back then, but I was always just kinda 'meh' about it.. Castlevania too

All I can say is you're missing a large portion of action platforming history, sir. I can also understand why many people don't willingly subject themselves to the level of challenge those classic NES titles offer; it's not something made for this modern world LOL.

Holy shit, you don’t like Mega Man, Metroid, or Castlevania? Def stay away from Symphony of the Night, one of the “worst games ever”

It uses the exact combined formula from the games that you don’t like, lol. But it’s known as a AAA classic, and I’d say it’s the best Castlevania, maybe even one of the best 2D platformers I can think of. Esp if you like rpg mechanics thrown in

Agreed! The GBA ones are good too, they follow the same MetroidVania structure, maybe even have more features. But SOTN is just fucking amazing.

Anyone ever play Salt and Sanctuary? It’s an indie ps4 game (maybe other platforms too). It’s a lot like SOTN with Dark Souls mixed together. Just a fucking amazing game, better than a lot of AAA 3D games

Dude the GBA Castlevania titles were why I got the GBA at launch, lol. Circle of The Moon, etc. Classics! I LOVE that style of gameplay. So satisfying! Super Metroid is timeless and untouchable as well IMHO!

I would never play  a modern game at all!

The only modern games that I play, are the ones made in the old 8, and 16-bit style graphics.

I pretty much only play the emulators of all the good old systems, like the PC-Engine, the Genesis, the Super NES, NES, Master System, etc.

New games just don't cut it for me, they are all about flashy graphics, but aren't any fun.

Plus, I don't like playing games where you have to use so many damn buttons!

Metroidvania, and to a lesser extent, platformers, are the only genre all even touch now days, and nothing more.

This is what I'm trying to beat now.

I'm necro bumping this thread because I don't care, I'm a veteran

But no, I did not miss out, because I played them... Just never liked them, still don't.

I find platformers to be pretty lame, Mario games are an exception... And brace yourselves, I actually liked 'Bubsy' too, the the 2d ones anyway.

Once a game goes platformer/jump puzzley though, I tend to nope out pretty quick.. It killed doom eternity for me, and far cry 3, amongst some others.

There's one that is insanely popular right now that I gave an honest chance, lots of 10/10 ratings and shit, but I hated it... I really tried to like it, but couldn't... Trying to remember the name of it, but can't remember for for the life of me, even though it's on the tip of my tongue lol

You'e a skeleton of some sort and the 2d levels are proceduraly generated.. I fucking hated it

Playing through Diablo 1 for the first time on PS1.
Do you have to restart the game with your character to get strong enough to beat the game? Im about to kill the butcher but didn't manage to find a firewall book. Just a single scroll. Think that might be enough to kill him?

I've killed butcher with some weaksauce builds on PC.  Generally if you're looking for a spell at the beginning of the game you just reload it over and over till Adria sells what you want (she resets inventory on reload and on exiting dugeon)

I love being able to Bluetooth my ps4 controller to them as well....never would have thought that would be a thing when I was a kid
