What is your go to Substrate Recipe * 1
    #26250458 - 10/13/19 07:07 PM (4 years, 3 months ago)

There are a a lot of  recipes, and variations of those recipes, on these boards. I don’t know if it could ever be agreed that any one recipe is “The Best”, but what is your go to substrate recipe for cubes? Specifically for the standard shoebox tek?

If you're first starting out i would suggest just coir and verm (650g of dry coco coir and 2qts of verm) "pasteurized" using the boiling water bucket tek. (7-7.5liters of boiling water added to dry material s in bucket. Stir add lid. Wait 6-8hrs to cool to use. Other than that you can supplement with straw coffee manure etc you pick but proper pasteurization teks should be learned to increase success if you use supplements in your substrate.

Coir. And thats it get it up to field capacity and good to go, some coir iv used did seem to hold a little more or a little less water so its good to just grab a random handful and squeeze it see how much h2o comes out just to make sure you are neither wmto wet/dry.

Thanks for the responses. This is more a curiosity question.  What is the specific recipe you personally use the most ?

7 - 7.5 liters of water thats insane i just did the bucket tek and 4 liters was more than enough to get up to field capacity 7.5 liters would be way to much water

I've been putting a bunch of coir in the cooler and adding one kettle of boiling water at a time till it gets where I want it. I use the 5kg bricks ATM and I'd say I do about 12-15 kettles full. Wich is about 4 qts per KG give or take. I like mine a bit drier in the prep stage then I mist it as I am spawning tubs to get it just right. It's a hell of a lot easier to add water than to squeeze it out.

Just coir, for every brick one teaspoon dehydrated lime and a tablespoon of gypsum. I add it to a pc with your water boiling and then turn off the heat and put on the lid. Just try to keep it as close to120f for an hour. Could even put an oven at 120 and put it in there with the lid off.

What does the dehydrated lime do? Does it help raise or lower PH levels and is it necessary for a particular type of mushroom?

Not sure why it's added but lime will raise the pH

I do 650g coir, 4L water, 3 quarts verm, 1 cup gypsum.

Ive tried coir only but CVG seemed a little better.

I see Slinkk uses dehydrated lime.  I looked that up and all I found was

Must mean hydrated lime!  I'm trying that right now AAMOF.  I found some on eBay for cheap.  It arrived looking like a suspicious white powder in a non-branded impulse sealed bag.

I tried assessing ph of my substrate by pressing ph papers hard against the wet CVG.  I think it was about 5.75, now with a little CaOH2 it's about one point higher.

I read here that it doesn't help anything but I also read that 7 is cubensis favourite ph.

Coir and verm.  Tried and true.  Follow Daimon's bucket tek with the addition of the a blanket for the bucket.

Always did 1 brick of coir and 2tsp of gypsum to 4 quarts water. I just dumped the brick into my pc, add gypsum, pour boiling water in and close the lid. Never failed but I’ve been out of commission for a while, so what do I know...

1 brick coir
1qt vermiculite
3qt water.

I use boiling water, some use tap water. I think the tap water takes longer to fully saturate the mixture but not 100% sure

I haven’t laughed so hard in a while. Yeah hydrated lime for the pH. I add verm if there’s too much moisture

Field aged Horse shit + tap water. It works for me.

I've done coir & hay too but this is usually my go to.

Hehe, JR is a cheeky motherfucker aint he.

1000g coir
5qts verm
5.5qts water
Bucket tek

I run 100qt tubs.
It'd be nice to swap the verm for horse shit or black kow. We'll see.
