Sheet mulching
    #26235906 - 10/07/19 04:02 PM (4 years, 3 months ago)

So my farm has some pretty crap soil.  Sandy clay, only decent dirt is like the first 6”.  So I’ve been looking at doing some sheet mulching to try and give the ol’ lady a good garden spot since she’s managed to grow some bell peppers and didn’t kill them like her previous cactus!  I get the whole idea behind it, my question is if I get it started now, will it be plantable come spring?  We’re in the southeast of the Carolinas if that helps anybody with an idea....thanks for the input.

I'm not sure about sheet mulching but have you considered a raised bed garden or containers?
I use both methods with some success. In the ground always does better but we have decent soil here.
I've started my first compost pile this year and hope to have a shit ton of compost ready to enrich the soil and do a little better in the containers next year.

One of the counties here actually have a big compost site, and you just bring a trailer and they load you up dirt cheap, so I’ve considered running the disc over the area for her garden and then bringing in a couple yards of compost to disc into that and build onto it from there year after year.....we started with 15.6 acres of woods, cleared an acre for the yard and I cleared out another acre for the animals.  It’s hell starting from scratch but wouldn’t have it any other way!
