"Most powerful" ever methane seep discovered in Arctic Ocean * 1

Here comes the positive feedback, I guess.

Oh boy, Earth 2100 is all I can think about these days.  It's going to be here before you know it.  People will be saying "How could they have been so stupid 100 years ago?"

How, indeed.  The stupid factor is insignificant compared to the propaganda machine designed to convince people it's not happening.

I often think of David Koch, who is credited as being one of the prime driving factors of climate change denial.  I believe in the afterlife, Tibetan book of the dead stuff, pretty sure he was hoping none of that was true.

violent bubbles seemed to make the water “boil” over an area of 50 square feet.

Quote:

Currently, the Arctic Ocean accounts for less than one ten-thousandth of methane emissions, so even a hundred-fold increase would be barely noticeable. Land-based Arctic permafrost is currently a much bigger source.

Moreover, it is possible methane fountains have always been a feature of the Arctic Ocean, caused by local phenomena. Having studied the area so poorly until recently we lack a good baseline to know what is normal.

And it burns clean, ironically enough.
This powerful greenhouse gas could be harnessed - with the right technology - and burned cleanly. Maybe we are just not that advanced a species after all.

This is what's been expected to emerge and is a likely sign of things to come.  It's the exact kind of thing to except from a rapidly warming arctic.  There is a lot of methane frozen underwater.

If more and more of these things start springing up, there's no telling where it could end maybe.

The concentrations of methane are increasing in the arctic specifically.  Something is certainly going on which can be plainly seen in the melting tundra in Siberia where the smell of decomposing animals which were frozen in it for however long have recently unthawed after 1000's of years.

The deepfreeze is unplugged now, which is another feedback because of the ever-lessening white ice cap.

As for burning it, that would be a poetically just source for a transition fuel, should there be such a thing.  Quit fossil fuel extraction and burn the methane being released en masse, which would lower it's climate change impact in the short to medium term.

Maybe someone will tell me that would actually be worse...

just thaw and suck it up floating energy farms!

Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
