I too thought the exact same thing as you, so my first attempt at growing mushrooms I tried this tek. Everything went exactly as planned, and I managed to produce some nice sized shrooms. The only downfall to the system that I've noticed so far is harvesting. The Jars get many aborts in them and get looking messy real quick, and, I cant fit my hand in the jar to clean them up. Also, I had one jar that was full of large mushrooms, and I couldn't even get tweezers or a knife or ANYTHING into the jar to get em out. It was quite an ordeal. Also, it can be quite hard to tell when the viel begins to tear away cause you cant see into the jar all that well.I used this method twice now, but am not all that experienced of a mushroom grower. I've got a terrerium setup now for the 1st time and am trying that method next as it seems to be more popular and I figured there must be reasoning behind that. Anyone else want to comment? Cause I'm fairly new to this as well.

I don't really consider the Quart-Jar method one for beginners. Although if you follow the instructions (as with any TEK) you can succeed. The Quart-Jar method is GREAT if you are looking to case. It provides you with plenty of substrate that can be case. This method also has its drawbacks, mainly since there is so much more substrate to colonize, contams tend to be more of a problem. Hope that helps.

My dog used this tek the first time he tried growing shrooms. It works in that it's simple to do and hard to screw up. My dog says that don't bother trying to grow shrooms in the jar. He tried this and ended up with cobweb mold. He thinks the jars are too small to provide the right environment for consistent success rates. He eventually extracated the cake from the jars and just cased them. He got loads of shrooms doing this. I wouldn't worry about contams during colonization. Just make sure that you don't open the jars while they are upright, turn them upside down to vent the CO2 if you think they need it. My dog says make sure you put them in a dark place with the temp around 85F or you will be waiting a long time for them to colonize.------------------ -snarf

this technique is simply bad, period. Okay so you have fully colonized quart jars of rye grain and about the inchs in diameter of cropping surface, that is stupid. If you have a fully colonized quart jar of rye grain why not lay it down in a tray over the top of a one inch layer of moist vermiculite and case it? you get more cropping surface thud more shrooms.

As far and the prep method, it's pretty much what you would do if you used rye grain. When my dog did it, he didn't find it too hard to shake either. It clumped up a bit but it colonized pretty fast anyways. The beauty of not using rye is that you have a much lower chance of contamination.sean - I agree, trying to grow shooms in the jar is kinda dumb. Definitely case. lucky - You should notice white stuff in 3 to 5 days. If you follow the tek, it says to shake a couple of times I think. Definitely do this, it speeds up colonization. ------------------ -snarf
