Joining the European Union...
    #2622099 - 04/30/04 02:48 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

Hi!

So I turned on the TV and saw all these "Welcome to the EU!" parties going on everywhere and stuff... Then I remembered - my country is becoming a member of the EU on the 1st of May (and it's like in 12 minutes).  :handth:

So, ehm, welcome me to the EU!

I remeber that I voted against in the referendum last fall (I'm eurosceptic actually) and that the results were like 66.9% in favor to joining the EU. Not so much, really...

I also know that Norway and Switzerland are still not members of the EU. I'd like to hear any opinions as well from Swiss/Norwegian guys as from people from EU member countries. What do You think of all this? Is this any good? Bad? Why? Are we going towards the USE (United States of Europe)? :crazy2:

I think the EU has  a fair amount of issues to work out, especially over the Euro in comparrison to the dollar, but i think the U.S. needs a good competitor.. and the EU and China both seems like good contenders in the future...

oh and congrats to your country

I didn't celebrate it, our leaders talked about it for 10 years and I have more then enough of it. Since I live on the border with Italy I will benefit when the border is gone, but it will remain there for at least 3 more years. My town hosted one of the main celebrations and the security measures were so tight that it was better to stay at home. Polititians are afraid for their asses, even if Al-quaeda wasn't invited.

So Croatia is trying to enter it too. Are you pro or contra?

BTW. Tonight I'm going to a Goran Bregovic concert.

I'm in the UK and am generally warm to the idea of further integration, although I think that might make me outspoken over here.  I like the idea that I can move to one of the other member states with little trouble if I wanted to.  I also like the idea that so many diverse countries can group together to form a union, it reminds me a little of the US.

Congrats, I hope your country benefits from this.  :goodluck:

The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

I remember  So, that is pretty practical thing for you.

In the moment when people are completely politically illiterate, it is very dangerous thing to enter integrations that will remove the last feeling of will for fighting for the future on the political level. I hope we will realize movement of the political catharsis soon enough, before we get asimilated as cheap cattle.

Very nice. Have a good time

Huh, so you consider ceding all your sovereignty as state to an overpowering economic bully a cause for celebration? Strange world.

I also like the idea of the world without borders and I voted for EU. But current situation is still far from ideal. Xenophobia is rising in entire Europe and that worries me. I saw the headlines in UK yellow press about thousands of immigrants from newly joined countries and the result of that is that you can move to Slovenia but I can't move in UK.
Not to mention the new walls on the outside EU borders and concentration camps for illegal immigrants.

You have the most beautiful sea in Europe. You shouldn't keep it only for yourself.
