Death cap in PNW? ID help please.
    #26237756 - 10/08/19 02:09 PM (1 year, 4 months ago)

Habitat:
City park in Bellingham, WA growing in bark in a small grouping.

I'm suspecting an Amanita sp, but I'm new at mushroom hunting.

Thanks!

I believe you are quite correct. Amanita phalloides

They aren’t native so you usually find them in urban/suburban areas where they might come in with landscaping materials

Disclaimer - I'm just a hobbyist and cannot absolutely guarantee any ID offered. I'm most familiar with the species found in the Pacific Northwest - those found in other parts of the world may vary considerably, so always do your own research to find out what grows in your area and what lookalikes you need to aware of. Understand that many mushroom species cannot be 100% reliably identified by photographs alone, even by an expert, so it may not be possible to go beyond suggesting a probable genus.

The chunk looks like picking damage..... I’ll bet the other munch marks are from slugs. As far as I know, they can eat things that are poisonous to humans without any problems.
