EAT'S UNBUCKET T3K 1.0 ™(NOT REALLY) * 10
    #26216702 - 09/28/19 08:04 PM (1 year, 2 months ago)

:chief:Eat's UnBucket T3K 1.0 :chief:

Brought to you by THE TRIBE

Hello Shroomery!  :hi:

:vibin:

This TEK involves a bucket, bowl, large pot or anything with enough volume to mix substrate in. But it isn't like the bucket TEK because there isn't much TEK involved. Hence, UNBUCKET T3K 1.0™ . It is different in that you don’t boil water.

Bucket tek is a thing of the past because you don't need to boil water to treat coir to get good results. Just add some warm water to expand it and you are done. Don't measure any temperature, don't spend 20 plus minutes boiling water, don't spend time thinking about it. Pour some water on coir to expand it in a bucket, a bowl, a large pot, DONE.

The warmth in the water is simply to expand the coir faster than using cool or room temperature tap water. It isn’t necessary to boil the water to treat the coir. You can get results using cool or room temperature tap water but the subs colonize and fruit a little slower than if you heat treated. Then spawn your bulk as per your usual method.

UNBUCKET T3K 1.0™ (NOT REALLY)

Supplies for one Tote:
  • 1 Small Brick Coir(Eco Earth is what I am using here)
as it holds the volume of your substrate.

  • Bucket, Large Metal Pot, Giant Bowl for mixing the substrate in. It does not matter what you use as long as it has enough volume for your substrate and a lid.

  • 3 Quarts Vermiculite

  • 4.5 Quarts Warm Tapwater

  • 5 Colonized Quarts of your finest clean spawn

  • this recipe may vary depending on type and size of coir brick used or fine and coarse grade vermiculite. See notes below about testing for field capacity moisture content. We all use different variables so there is a lot of flexibility in volume. It may take a test run to achieve your perfect ratio. No one recipe is better or worse, it is all about having the proper moisture content of your substrate.

Summary:

There are 3 steps involved.

1. You can do this one of two ways:

A. Turn on your faucet to the highest temperature setting. let it run 1-3 minutes until the water is as warm as it gets. Then measure 4.5 quarts of water.

B. Measure out 4.5 quarts of water to 1 small brick of eco earth coir.(volume may vary depending on the size of brick or coir you are using).  Heat up water in a pot but don’t heat it up more than 5 minutes. Going full boil isn’t necessary. It is time consuming. Just bring the temp up enough to expand the coir.

2. Dump the water and your coir brick into an UNBUCKET T3K 1.0™ (NOT REALLY). Put the lid on whatever you are using.  Let it expand for 30 minutes to an hour depending on when you want to spawn. More recently I’ve been spawning faster than 30 minutes. The time required to wait is more about expanding the brick than the actual temperature. Last night I spawned after ten minutes.

Recently I’ve seen discussion about eco earth coir bricks being smaller and expanding much less than before. Even taking half as much water than in the past. A good rule of thumb is to add some water, test field capacity with a squeeze of the substrate so that a steady drop of water flows between your fingers. To be safe put 4 quarts in first let it expand, if it can take the other half quart of water after you mix your substrate, then add it as needed. If you over pour water volume you can always make up by adding more vermiculite. I have some old bricks so this is not the case but a friend mentioned he’s putting in half the volume of water he used to. It’s easier to add less at first then add more water as needed.

A note about the field capacity Test: to achieve the perfect moisture content for substrate or casing use the field capacity test. Grab a handful of substrate and use a light squeeze between your hand. If a steady drip of water comes out between your fingers, it is at Field capacity. If you squeeze hard you will see a steady drip.

This is what my field capacity looks like after the substrate is mixed. With a hard squeeze its a steady flow of water. With a light squeeze it would have a steady drip.

If it’s a heavy flow of water with a light squeeze you have too much water. Then you would add vermiculite to adjust down to field capacity. Depending on the coir or vermiculite you use(ie coarse or fine vermiculite) this May determine your final volume of vermiculite and overall ratio. If you squeeze and no water comes out, add a little more water to get to field capacity. Make sure to record the amount of water you put in, so that next time you can use that volume to initially expand the coir and get your recipe perfect.

3. Once the coir is expanded. Add 3 quarts of fine vermulite. Mix it up nice and even. Then spawn. Done. I generally mix using plastic gloves(the same pair for 10 plus years) so that I don't get my hands too dirty.

Fruiting is up to you but I generally mix spawn nice and even with gloved hands. Top layer 1/4” of substrate on top of the mix.

4. Easy Peasy

Pasty, do you still sterilize your coir?

glad I saw this, poured agar last night for first time, a practice 10 plates from unsterile sleeve and about to get our first grow on in this next week. will be using this coupled with bodhi's unmodified monotub once I get the MS cleaned up and narrowed down.

definitely deserves a spot on the easyAF and noob series, thanks for posting it! :mushroomtwirl:

Not anymore, actually haven’t in a long time it just took too long. I do think that it colonizes a bit better with it sterilized but not enough to offset the effort to do so. Strength and vigor of the spawn is more important imo anyway. Cron pulled off an unpasteurized manure sub recently. It did alright which just goes to show that speed and recovery are super important.
