New Grower Needs Advice and Answers

Hello Shroomery
Well this is my first post on the board sorry it?s gotta be a ?can you help me? one :]
Right so I bought my first ever mushroom kit about 3 / 4 weeks ago, I used the instructions for the kit that the website suggested which was, Get a plastic box fill it 2 inches full or perlite add ? pints of water, Keep the temp above 75f and air it once a day. Now I?ve been doing all this and growth has happened but the shrooms seem to grow tall or short and then just stay like that, Most of the caps seem to shrivel up a little bit and not open. Here are a few pictures of what they look like now.
So my first questions are why are the caps not opening up? Is this normal? And does it really matter that they aint opening? Is there anything more I can do to help the growth this far into it? Or is it just best to leave it to do its own thing now.
And the shrooms don?t seem to be growing as fully as I thought they would, they just seem to be dotted around the kit, whether this is because of my bad growing skills or I just bought a bad kit I don?t know. And one last question that I gotta ask. Are the shrooms meant to have the black discoloration when you slice them in half sounds silly but then I?ve only ever seem them dried before. Picture below.
Well thanks for all your time and help. :]
Easy now. ~Miysis

Yes......lots of aborts there, be sure to pick them and don't let them rot, but to answer your question there's any number of reasons why that would happen including the spores themselves, that's what makes the hobby so much fun.

Is it a black color or dark blue? That last pic looks dark blue to me and if that is the case it would be quite potent judging from the staining.

Ok so I don't know the level of humidity. The temp is always over 75f, I'm not misting (Don't even know what misting is). I just doing what the website told me to do and that was, box, 2 inches perlite, keep above 75f and air once a day. That is all I've done.

Could be your humidity is way low and/or your temp is too high.
How much over 75 does it get?

I would not worry about those-some people say the aborts/pins are more potent than the full grown specimens and judgeing from that pic I would say they are close to the truth. As long as you see no contams I would eat them-but if you suspect anything other than mycelium I wouldnt eat them. If your humidity is very low,It could cause them to shrivel and abort-Are there any condensation water bubbles on the interior of your fruiting chamber? The humidity needs to be around 90-100%rh

Thats a little high - IMO-its good for mycelium growth but not that great for fruiting, but they should survive, could be part of your problem

I dont know then-try fanning more and try to get the temp down-frozen water bottles work good for that. You may have just gotten a bad kit, spores, strain it could be anything,I was just touching on the basics and I hope I helped. Oh btw, very nice grow!
