2019 Arctic Sea Ice Minimum Tied for Second Lowest On Record

Where do you post this but here?

Id say politics is central to why this is happening.  So take heart.  Climate change is the biggest event in human history, and it's only going to get ever more and more intense.

All the sons of bitches are placing themselves firmly on the wrong side of this inevitable reckoning the human race is in for.  All the free marketeers a la Koch brothers S.O.B.s, the overindulgent out of touch so-called elite class gang of usurers, the shrieking religious right, the Donald Trumps, the Ted Cruz's, the Stephen Harpers, the Doug Fords...all of 'em.

Like the inevitable rising sun, a new dawn surely must come.  A new enlightenment.  People will look back on our time as a dark age.

Shit's gonna get real once 135F heatwaves start appearing, or the oceans start to die off massively, when they have to start a new category 6 classification of hurricane and that blows into town, people are going to get very scared and then they will wake up and change.

We are looking at perhaps 8F average warming by the end of this century if we stay on the present course, the course many of our present leaders are determined to take, and it just keeps going and going from there, until it is inevitably dealt with.

The world is in for a change that has never been seen before.  Issues are going to be forced.  Deeply held delusions are going to be dragged out into the light.  This is the biggest event in human history, universal in it's reach, and perhaps it won't be resolved in any of our lifetimes, but surely before the end of the next it will be, because there isn't much more time.

A couple hundred years goes by pretty quick.

Global warming could otherwise be described as "too much energy" in the system. Aren't we running out of energy though (oil and gas)?

I remain optimistic. With the development of technologies such as artificial intelligence for example, humanity could potentially harness this extra energy in the system, develop plastic eating bacteria for the oceans....etc etc. We could even use storms as an energy source (think tidal power X1000).

As with all things, balance is key. Denying climate change is a huge problem, and the emerging eco-fascist greens movement is also a problem.
As mycologists we have some responsibility for earths future I do believe. A big green movement is what we need (not the kind we have which is a power play and nothing to do with the environment)

OP used the phrase "until it is inevitably dealt with". There is really only one way this can happen, which is when the human race is wiped out or nearly so. Then the earth can very slowly start getting better.

My argument isn't against climate change. It's against hysteria-driven weather-based apocalyptical models used as narratives for political swing. According to Al Gore we were supposed to be under water years ago. It's not a surprise less and less people give a shit at this point. Are you surprised people are cynical, non-caring, and anti-activist on this topic, even with newer data? Have experts cried wolf one too many times?

But you're all for the hysteria-driven economic-based apocalyptical models used as narratives for political swing I bet. You know the ones where a carbon tax sends the world into recession because the fossil fuel industry's profits drop slightly.

Maybe the Arctic could borrow a couple feet of land ice from Montana.
They're going to have a little extra this weekend.

No. We have enough fossil fuels to power the planet for like 10 thousand years. Just in natural gas alone the US has enough to power itself for the next thousand years. Alternative forms of energy obviously need to be found, but currently solar and wind simply aren't enough to meet demands.

If they stopped the extreme rhetoric and had an honest conversation I'd listen. But it's always "the planet is dying" "you question climate science, therefore you're evil and a heretic." The Greta Thunbergs of the world will throw us in prison the first chance they get. The under 30 crowd has been, IMO, MK Ultrad.

Based on everything I've read it's likely we'll see a trend toward a cooling ice age (right now we're in a warming interglacial period) in the next few hundred years. What is happening is pretty much par for the course of cyclical climate change. While the North Pole's ice is melting, Antarctica's ice is growing. Unfortunately, we don't know enough about the climate to give definitive answers as to what is natural and unnatural climate change. And the worst part is "climate change" is being treated as if it is ALWAYS unnatural, which is obviously untrue.

Yes. You can't compare the ebbs and flows of a few hundred years to a few hundred million. The Earth has seen far worse in terms of climate change than what is currently being observed. And as humans we have enjoyed a cool and stable climate.

There is certainly not nearly enough fossil fuels for 10 thousand years of human expansion.  That just big oil lies.

I don't, for the life of me, know why we have to disagree about this. Anyone who has seen the science knows it's happening. It's exactly like "believing" or "not believing" in evolution. Same thing.

There are thousands and thousands of projections of what happens when we die.  One thing I do know is that religion is wrong.  In the dream world, you make your own rules.  There is no governing body.

So your fears, your myths, your hopes and desires all play a roll.

But we are not dead, we are living.  So let's not let myth and rumor Govern our decisions.

Hypothetical? Countless examples of the current detrimental changes due to climate change. They're worse than predicted and are a deeply troubling indication of what is to come. How could you be that uneducated about the effects?

In France businesses are offered incentives to frow trees and gardens on the roofs of big buildings. There are things we can do if we don’t just ignore it and slash the EPA by 80%

Climate is changing drastically all across the world, as a result of burning fossil fuels at an all time high.

Don't take my word for it, take NASA's:

https://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/

I would love to know how you could read this and still be in such denial?

More SOB's now.

What does dumping a new substance into the atmosphere on a planetary scale, enough to cool the earth,  sound like to you?  Wanna do that?  The technology is not far from being ready and it’s affordable, but it could cause massive changes in regional weather patterns and eradicate blue sky.

Here is a representative of the so-called elite pushing just that, while saying Fossil fuel divestment has ‘zero’ climate impact, says Bill Gates. Remarkable thing to say, you sure get an on-message headline with that.

Let me guess.  This enterprise would be something that is to be privately owned and profited off of.  The stock market would gain.  Only communists on the left hate that kind of success.  Besides, the real solution called the green new deal has windmills that cause cancer, and you can't watch TV unless the wind blows.  Zing.

How come you exhibit this extreme nonchalance towards human-caused climate change but not towards human migration?

I'm sure you have a good reason for this glaring contradiction, but on the surface it kinda looks like you are not participating with good faith in this discussion on climate change.

The weather in the US has been business as usual, I don't see the need to get hysterical about it.

Migration is a different story entirely, I don't want my homeland invaded by illegals from the third world. I just want the existing immigration laws enforced.

Where is the contradiction?

I honestly think that part of the GOPs reluctance to talk about dealing with climate change is that a lot of them are End-Times evangelical protestants, and it's literally a death cult.

They want shit to get as bad as possible, because their book of Bronze Age fairy tales says that's what needs to happen before their magical friend Jesus can come back.

The climate is always changing
Man has little effect on it.

You don't see a connection between mass migration and climate change?
Didn't you just argue that climate change might not be a net negative because some places might benefit?  Isn't the other side of that coin an admission that other places will see negative effects?  Wouldn't negative climate change effects be a serious impetus to move one's ass somewhere more habitable?

Seems like it to me, but I'm interested to see why you don't think so.

I know that climate change is used as a justification for migrants flooding into the EU, but that doesn't necessarily make it the case.

The UN stated that the reason why the vast majority of migrants flooded into the EU was for economic reasons or seeking a higher standard of living.  They wanted better wages, housing, education and future for their children.  That isn't at all correlated with climate change.

Africa had a massive population explosion and they couldn't manage it very well, that's why many want to get the hell out of there. Again, that's not related to climate change.

If climate change affects a certain area, that does NOT mean a person flees 1000-3000 miles away from their original location. So if climate change affects a certain part of Africa, that's Africa's problem, not the EU which is far removed from it.

Climate change impacts all regions of earth - some more than others. As climate change increase, so will migration. Is is thought that by 2050, 1 billion people will be displaced.

https://unu.edu/media-relations/media-coverage/climate-migrants-might-reach-one-billion-by-2050.html

It seems like you would be a big proponent of preventing the worst effects of climate change given your distaste towards migration

Migration can occur for a variety of reasons and climate change doesn't give illegal immigration into Western nations anymore validity.

Every region of the globe will have to deal with their own issues, it certainly doesn't justify some sort of global migration free for all.

I'm just demanding that the existing immigration laws are enforced, how is that xenophobic?

Illegal immigration brings in broke third world migrants, even Bernie acknowledges the US can't afford that to happen. Illegals dilute wages and become a tax burden for US citizens. That affects ALL US citizens, either directly or indirectly. Only The Elite benefit from this scenario, we don't need that with income and wealth inequality at a 80 year high.

Doesn't matter, won't affect anything. The sea level will rise and rich people who live along the coast will have to move.

Actually it'll be a benefit overall because it'll open up new shipping routes near the north pole.

A climate scientist doesn't accept it and a paper was retracted.

I guess that constitutes an offensive.  Is that supposed to have more weight than the 1000's of studies that have withstood peer review, or the overwhelming consensus of climate scientists, which never was quite 100% anyways?  It's nothing new or particularly remarkable.

Couldn't find much on  Dr. Mototaka Nakamura other than shrieking, but comment on the retracted IPCC paper was in physics.org.

Going to get a lot worse.  Younger generations are likely done for.  My generation might survive to see the end coming.

Between the political damage Trumps done and not one thing going right in the world.  Trump gave every stupid American a voice.  The damage to international relations, the environment and the donestic agenda is epic.

Trump is Nixon in a cheap suit on a meth binge.

You can see the wall on google right where the W is in NW. Today’s work is to test the retractable portion that crosses 17th street.

Minutes after the Venetian city council voted down a resolution addressing the climate crisis Wednesday, the council chambers were filled with water for the first time in history, the result of unprecedented flooding in the city due to the highest tides in 50 years.

It’s amazing how far people will go to ignore what is happening right in front of them.

Venice is likely going to be lost. I can’t imagine there is a way to prevent permanent inundation

I live in Hawaii and the sheer number of people is astonishing on Oahu, considering the actual SPACE available here.

I just looked up sea level measurements..
https://sealevelrise.org/states/hawaii/

"The sea level around Hilo Bay, Hawaii, has risen by 10 inches since 1950. Its speed of rise has accelerated over the last ten years and it’s now rising by about 1 inch every 4 years.1 Scientists know this because the sea level is measured every 6 minutes using equipment like satellites, floating buoys off the coast, and tidal gauges to accurately measure the local sea level as it accelerates and changes."

An inch over 4 years is not bad, let's say it magnifies by 10.. TEN INCHES every four years... Still isn't going to wreck Honolulu.

Is the issue on the Mainland different than an island? I would think that a small island, such as Hawaii, would be especially fucked, fucked hard, and fucked sooner with this rising sea level stuff.

Regardless, I need to get off this rock. There are too many people here and no where to run when shit hits the fan!

The Greenland melt that happened this summer likely added 1/2 inch alone to sea levels. That’s 1/2 inch in a month.

So we either pump sea water over the ice wall or manufacture a massive sponge to soak up that 1/2 inch.

Problem solved.

It used to be normal to have a few handfuls of shrooms by the end of oct . The change in temp created enough fog drip to make them grow before the rain really became regular .

Fun fact:

We're gonna run out of oxygen before we run out of fossil fuels.

Don;t worry about coal and oil, we got plenty to burn. Using current technology, we have access to enough fossil fuels to get the atmospheric concentration of CO2 to 0.5-1%, minimum.

Which just happens to be toxic to life as we know it.

Isn't it 10-20 times that before it's fatal to humans?

Of course length of exposure affects that as well.

at 0.1%, most people complain about odors. People start feeling sleepy around 0.25%, and you can expect health effects at about 0.5%. At 1-2% concentration, people start feeling drunk.

The above numbers are based on Air Force pilot studies, so healthy young adults in great shape. Granny ain't gonna do so well. Neither is baby.

The bushfire's started burning here the second week of Autumn.
Rain forest's that usually halt the fires burned.

Sydney saw 'Catastrophic' bushfire conditions last week. Imagine no rain for months, the bush as dry as it's ever been, low humidity, and up to 100km winds.
Any fire taking hold would simply be impossible to extinguish and the embers aren't landing 1-2km in front of the fire they are landing up to 10km from the fire front.

There would be few people on the east coast of Australia that haven't had a bushfire burning within 100km of their house in the last 2 months.
Former and current fire fighters say the fire seasons are definately starting earlier and are more severe.

Yet, the debate turns nasty as soon as anyone dares links the dryer conditions to climate change.
The right wing fucking-know-it-alls on Sky(Aus Fox) News just cannot stop with the climate change denial and ridicule.

And it's not even summer yet.

That's bizarre, you couldn't get 2 news reports further apart when compared with the one below. (* by the way, the Deputy P.M.'s comments regarding 'woke inner city greenies' pushed about 10 million people's buttons, whoops!)

Check this out, Chris Kenny, I found this searching through Andrew Bolt's rubbish on Sky, he's just as bad.

I did too. I assumed you had to get to a couple percent before it was dangerous. I recall one of the Apollo missions had a failure of the CO2 scrubber and levels got pretty high.

I don’t think toxic levels of CO2 are an actual threat through, and within reason increased CO2 means increased O2 output from plants. It’s pretty well established that many plants, especially trees, actually benefit from higher CO2 levels at least to around 600 ppm

Surely we'll cook long before it gets to toxic levels, right?

I think a lot of plants start dying around 2000ppm, which is a mere 0.2%.  That would be a killer.  If the plants died.

Anyways, it looks like we are going to go through the ringer here.  It's looking less and less likely that we will be able to avert this, deal with this, be responsible stewards of the earth like we are supposed to be.

No, instead we are going to wreck the planet.

I would feel slightly less bad about it if we had all got our kicks in before the whole shithouse goes up in flames, but, the destruction of the earth is being carried out for the pleasure of a very small percentage of the population, who profit from all this fossil fuel usage and are powerful members of society because of their wealth.  The rest of us got to drive back and forth to work.

Just out of curiosity, what other choice do we have?

"profit from all this fossil fuel usage"

The Elite will profit from any form of energy usage.

I really don't get why you're getting so hysteria here, there is no conspiracy to destroy the planet with using fossil fuels. Nobody if forcing the world to use cheap energy, it's economically inevitable until something better comes along.

We're talking about global commodities here, I highly doubt China or India are going to put themselves at a competitive disadvantage for climate change, not gonna happen.

The problem for people calling for the destruction of the Earth is that the vast majority of humans aren't buying into it.  They're going to need to see at least some destruction affecting the developed world, so far it's not there.

So we need to see the destruction before we do anything about it?

Nuclear weapons aren’t a problem because we’ve never been nuked.

Beside the fact that we are seeing increased destruction: worse droughts leading to crop failures and more fire fuel; worse fire seasons in many parts of the globe; stronger hurricanes and super typhoons making landfall; sea levels rising causing flood losses in what would have been normal tides just a decade ago

etc

I'm not sure if CO2 levels have any significance. Terrestrial plants can tolerate high CO2 levels but the greatest sink for atmospheric CO2 is the ocean.

LOTS of photosynthesis happening in the ocean.

However, too much co2 in the ocean leads to an acidic condition that wipes out every creature in the ocean which lives in a shell.  When shellfish collapse so does the oceanic food chain.

The know-nothing Republicans in NC actually passed legislation that makes the state legislature unable to consider real science, such as ocean level rise, when putting together and proposing new laws like oceanfront zoning, etc.

here is an article about it.

Even if I agree that all of those events are caused by using fossil fuels, I think it's enough for most people to be very concerned.

China is currently the leader in renewable energy. Believe me, they aren't the ones at a "competitive disadvantage".

Climate change won't cause "destruction" in the sense that most people see destruction. It's not going to be a bomb going off. What's gonna happen is flooding, stronger hurricanes rearranging neighborhoods, and fires toasting everybody's marshmallows. And that's all already happening. Look at Florida, simultaneously denying climate change is a thing while complaining that they're getting "500 year floods" every year. People are pissed that their housing prices are not dependent on their elevation above sea level, while not realizing there's a reason for that.

People are generally idiots.

I posted last week about Sky News commentators pushing climate change denial.

An activist shareholder put Rupert Murdoch in the spot light this week with a question about the crap journalism coming from News Corp/Sky News Aus.

I doubt things will change, Andrew Bolt, Terry McCrann, Chris Kenny, Peta Credlin have created a climate denial cult and have no option than to keep doubling down on their rubbish claims

https://amp.theguardian.com/media/2019/nov/21/news-corps-rupert-murdoch-says-there-are-no-climate-change-deniers-around-here

Quote:

Rupert Murdoch says ‘there are no climate change deniers around’ News Corp

News Corp executive chairman Rupert Murdoch has said “there are no climate change deniers around I can assure you” after he was asked at the corporation’s AGM why his company gives them “so much airtime” in Australia.

Murdoch was speaking in New York on Wednesday when he received a question from a proxy for Australian activist shareholder Stephen Mayne.

Murdoch was asked about the company’s “stance on climate change”.

The questioner asked: “What do you believe is the global role of News Corp in the geopolitical climate? If you do believe in climate change, Mr Mayne is interested to hear why News Corp gives climate deniers like Andrew Bolt and Terry McCrann so much airtime in Australia?”
Murdoch responded with a promotion of his company’s corporate carbon reduction goals, saying “we have reduced our global carbon footprint by 25% six years ahead of schedule”.

Murdoch, 88, who was born in Australia, said News Corp was the first North American media company to commit to “science-based targets to limit climate change” and the company had cut its energy costs by US$18m ($26.5m) since 2014.
He also said his company was sourcing its print paper from certified sustainable sources.

Murdoch then added: “There are no climate change deniers around I can assure you.”

Bolt, a political commentator and blogger for News Corp Australia, is known for promoting the views of climate science deniers, and for his own attacks on “alarmists” and his derision of climate change science.

Bolt also has a nightly show on Sky News where he often interviews guests who reject that humans cause climate change.

Business writer McCrann is known for attacking the viability of renewable energy in his columns. In an interview on Sky News in early November, McCrann was responding to a question about a statement from 11,000 scientists warning of a climate emergency.
McCrann said: “I am sceptical of that word ‘scientist’. I think if you substitute ‘loon and hysteric’ then that is getting more accurately to the description of who these people are.”

A 2013 study of climate coverage in Australian newspapers found that one-third of coverage was sceptical and pointed to News Corp titles as the dominant factor.

At the time, News Corp said: “News Corp and its newspapers do accept the scientific consensus. There is no company edict on the line to take – editorial control rests with the editors.”

Yep this'll do thanks.

The average daytime temp across Aus pushed the record up by 0.6 degree C' last week then inialated that record by another full 1 degree 2 days later.

Doesn't matter how hot it gets, doesn't matter how dry it gets, the scientists journalists paid commentators at SKY just keep going with the climate change denial.

Wow that’s worse than we get. Funny how cold weather proves global warming isn’t real, but hot weather is never evidence of anything. He has a very amateurish, local TV news vibe to him. Stop moving your entire body with every word dude.

Sky News in Britain isn’t that bad. I assumed it would be like fox but it’s much more of a straight news outlet and not so much opinion.

SKY News Aus story recipe.

First, lay down a base of innocent reasoning.

Then, whip up some fear.

Next, go find an 'expert'

Link your expert to another 'expert's findings'  discuss.

Add in your 'alternative argument guest'... stir well then agitate, throw in some mockery and snide remarks, a fart joke will work if you're all out of snide remarks.

It doesn't matter if your story was debunked 5 years ago

even if someone like this idiot, the Minister for prostitution in The Phillipines ummm ... Nothing, mis-lead Parliament with the same ingredients, your target audience won't be able to tell the difference.

Add hubris to suit.

Handy Tip - Be sure to keep away from the ABC
