about drying mushrooms. ive heard of people just putting fresh mushrooms on a few peices of fresh paper to dry them. does this work very well? what about a paper bag? without fans/dessicants (or what about using dry perlite instead of dessicant? would that work?)

Paper, newspaper, a plate all work, they just take more time than using a dehydrator or des.

I notice that just about everyone fan dries their shrooms for a day before drying with dessicant; could you just put the shrooms right into the dessicant chamber after harvesting?

Dont do it, fresh shrooms rot real quick in a closed air enviroment...also you put alot of water into the dessicant if you dont fan dry, thus lowering its drying potential...

I always put fresh shrooms directly into the dessicant chamber and never had a problem. Maybe because it was pretty small, it sucked out the moisture quickly enough to prevent rotting.

I always do the same thing, fresh shrooms right in my chamber, the only problem i have seen is that the dessicant gets used up pretty quick this way.Its not a problem now because i use real Dessicant,so i just dry it in the oven and reuse it, but when i used damprid I use to have to change it every time i did a new batch of shrooms, because such a large amount of moisture was drawn out.Damprid gets expensive if your drying alot this way.

how much drierite do use per x amount of shrooms? how long b4 u have to recharge it if using directly on fresh shrooms? how many times, per batch, is it exchanged (and whats the absorbtion times for each interval)? I don't want to use dehydrator anymore. But, although it can be recharged, I wish to have bought enough so that there is new drierite in chamber while the old is drying. I'm also asking because I don't plan on buying the indicator variety. ~ These questions is for those who put (OR HAVE) shrooms IMMEADIATELY into drying chamber using DRIERITE. THXS

could one just dry out some mushrooms...by laying them on a wire screen with a fan blowing directly over em... leaving them bone dry. could this leave a cracker dry product or is desicant really neccesary for ultradryness?

I think u got to use something else one top of that or they'll rot, maybe if the humidty is exremely low. but remember, heat degrades them. dessicant gets it done throughly, quickly, & preserves much more of the good stuff.

Hey, just got a bit of silica ge(army surplus store)l. so if info above could be included for that as well it would be great. Though I plan to use drierite SOON because of the safety issues presented by shroomgod's report.

I agree with berto if your that worried about it, just buy some dessicant, If not I just take .25in screen and make a little tray to fit inside a shoe box and even for big shrooms it only take 3 to 4 day tops for fairly dry mushrooms, and if you don't tuch them a lot they stay nicely colored.

get some dissicant when you can. unless u want funky brown shrooms w/a reduced alkaloid content. Hell, even a dehydrator is better than air dry. But if it has a setting set it on the lowest one. Heat(not just time) degrades the "good stuff" too. You can see the difference too. My friend just picked some and this time I didn't get him my dehydrator until a day & half later. They were nothing like the last time. Use what u can but try to do better

then into drying chamber (easiest thing in the world to make, costs like $5. even if you don't have any spare wire or screen it's very cheap to make a set up like this the drying chamber has changed to a better design since this pic:
now the order of layers is top shrooms wire damp rid paper towel wire floor this is easy and stealthy as hell, my foaf says he can't get much more than an ounce into that little container, though so he told me he just got a bunch of shrooms cracker dry in front of the fan, b/c he doesn't have enough time to make more chambers so i guess whatever works better for you...

I use the damp rite on the shrooms in a large igloo cooler, lid cracked & ceiling fan on for air circulation. They're completely crisp in 1/2 to 1 day that way but I always air dry them first...on newspaper, under a dark cloth for 1-2 days.

Try placing in a vacuum container with dessicant in it - liek a foodsaver container. The lack of air/moisture and pressure causes the water to leave the little shroomie much more quickly. So I've heard.

split the realy big daddys into 4 from top to bottom so you are left with 4 skinny stems and caps if you havent got any dessecant this cuts the dryin time by 4 (i gues)
