I have a couple of other stones, but these are my favorite ones

The first one is a Labradorite gem that was given to me by someone and has sentimental value to me. It goes everywhere with me and has the prettiest colors when the sun hits it from the right angle.

The second one is an unidentified stone that I found when I went on holiday in Namibia. I saw the unique pattern on it and decided it would be the perfect thing to remind me of the trip I went on.

Nice collection madmuncher. I'm in Missouri I only have limited resources here.

Is that fire agate pass? It's a nice piece love it

Metric what is that? That's a cool stone you found on your trip. Nice find  I thought that labradorite was opal at first. Idk much about labradorite

That's cool. How big is the spear head?

My parents found a rock that had been obviously shaped, bout the size of a fist with one flattened end, I'm almost certain it was used as a handaxe. These things are everywhere really. Not surprising when you consider toolmakers lived here for more than 10,000 years and one person would have had many tools. Better our climate and vegetation seems to offer alot of protection from the elements and then occasional rains and snowmelt washes them out of their niches.

All the arrowheads I've found so far are quartzine. And they're larger than the arrowhead most folk typically display.

I imagine being made of a stronger stone and with a longer point it would have been better at taking down big game. Or possibly maybe as a weapon of war. Or maybe spearing fish. I don't know. But pondering it interests me.

I mostly collect quartz crystals though. My office is by some veins and all that construction dug alot up to the surface. A park nearby has them wash out of hills.

People used to walk/drive by and as if I was okay as I hunched over looking for crystals. Sometimes I'd explain what I was doing. Most were like "oh... okay..." but lately I've seen alot of other people doing it. I'm torn between being slightly jealous that they might find the good stuff and super happy that other people are taking the time and risking looking weird to enjoy the little details of the world around them. I'm more leaning toward that mindset because it's super cool.

Other than that I find alot of coal. Only really turned out useful that time when I thought it'd be cute to give everyone coal for christmas.

Hey everyone. New to this part of the site.. I got a recurve bow recently so I’ve been in the woods a lot more often. Ostensibly to stump shoot and practice distances but I often end up in the stream looking for fossils and just exploring. It’s really fun : )

I’ve found a million things back there but these are my only “whole” finds. 3 clam type critters and one like a scallop. Then there are the strange brown stick like things. I have no clue what they are but you can just tell they’re super old.

The hilly woods behind my house are actually sediment piles from when the area was under water off and on 5-23 million years ago. Crazy. I’m hoping for a megalodon tooth one day but I may have to look elsewhere.

Thanks man. I like the bottles too. I found an old milk bottle with George Washington face on it once too. It was really cool but I can’t find it now.

I also found a cool ceramic bottle with a neat fitting lid but that’s lost. One day I’m going to actually put my knee high rubber boots on and take a lil hand shovel. All these I just find laying in the stream. The heavy rains always expose new stuff and the woods are basically hell on earth in the summer so around October it’s like a whole new unexplored stream.

Oh just because it’s so hot and humid and the woods are super thick. Spider webs, ticks, insane briars, and poison ivy everywhere.

You can get down there to the stream and walk freely with boots but it’s just a serious pain in the summer so I mostly give it over to the bugs until October.

I’m in Maryland near the Chesapeake bay.

most spear points are a lot smaller than people imagine

jt was perfectly balanced it spun like a top on both sides.
i gently set it down on a granite counter top when i was a teenager and it cracked in half

they really are everywhere. i found a red jasper arrowhead on top of a mountain last summer and a whole bunch of knappings and tools around old campsites in the desert not sure if i have pics of them..

bet theres all kinds of cool stuff in and around those quartz deposits cookie. those are cool points they look really old. bows and arrows were used more recently those might be spear points

should dig around those quartz deposits bet theres gold, silver, copper, galena, maybe some cool jems too

I’m not sure what they are, they just looked pretty in the stream so I grabbed them up. They get a little crusty looking when they’re dry but look cool wet.

The big chunky rock is real chaotic up close and the little pink one has a couple white things inside or something.

I haven’t ever messed around in the bigger water but I’m sure you could find all kinds of crazy things if you knew how to look.

haha no dude that's some fines and small nuggets i mined. if you want to find jars full of gold get a small sluice box, pan, good boots, flathead shovel, camo jacket (multi-toned and reversible preferably) and some good maps and work the old timers tailing piles probably your best bet. what area you in?

**Personal use and commercial obsidian mining is under a temporary moratorium for the 2020 season (https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/modoc/news-events/?cid=FSEPRD697609).**

The volcanic deposits found in the Warner Mountains come in many forms. From the light weight pumice sometimes called “floating rocks” to the dense, glass-like obsidian, the colors and diversity are amazing. The Warner Mountains are famous for the variety of obsidian and for the 4 mines where the public can, with a permit, collect it. The four mines, Pink Lady, Lassen Creek Rainbow, Needles and Middle fork Davis Creek are all located within a few miles of US Hwy 3 95 near the Oregon border. The colors of obsidian range from jet black, to grey, to pink. Rainbow obsidian, found at the Rainbow mine and Middle Fork Davis Creek is sought after for its colorful sheen. Pink obsidian from Pink Lady and the bundles of obsidian needles from the Needles mine are most popular.

Obsidian is dense volcanic glass, usually rhyolite in composition and typically black in color. Obsidian is often formed in rhyolite lava flows where the lava cools so fast that crystals do not have time to grow. Glass, unlike crystals, has no regular structure and therefore fractures in smooth, curved shapes. The intersections of these fractures can form edges sharper than the finest steel blades. For this reason, obsidian was used by many native cultures to make arrowheads and blades.

On the Modoc National Forest, obsidian excavation may be done during the open season (May-October depending on weather and road conditions) under a Free Use Authorization at any of the four designated common use areas: Lassen Creek Rainbow Mine, Needles Mine, Middle Fork Davis Creek Mine, Pink Lady Mine. Excavation is allowed at these locations only. The Free Use Authorization allows a visitor to collect a predetermined amount per year of obsidian for their own personal use. This obsidian may not be sold or traded. Collection for resale is a violation of the Free Use Authorization permit.

Lol. That’s a cool stash.

I’m near Annapolis MD. I’ve never heard of any kind of gold being found in the area but admittedly I know nothing of geology and proper rock hunting. I just started realizing how much cool stuff is just hanging out in the ground.

I really want to find some amber. There is some in the state I read but it’s up a ways from me.
