Confused: Taking agar out of PC

hi,

I am confused about how to get my Erlenmyer out of my PC before the agar cools down too much? Can i wait until all the gauge is on zero and then open it up, or will the agar have hardened? Do i use towels as not to burn my hand?

Ya open at zero.

Use a hot pan holder or towel. Take bottle out. Pour once cool but not so cool it solidifies.

How I do it is

- once pressure drops I take out my agar and place into my SAB

- wait for agar to cool down enough to where it's cool enough that i can touch it without burning my hand (if you have a laser point thermometer thing, think theyre called infrared thermometers?, They help out ALOT)

- pour plates

When I pull it out of the PC I use those oven mitts since its still usually hot as hell but a towel would work good to :thumbup:

You've got a lot of time between when the pressure cooker reaches zero and the agar hardens.  Like A LOT of time.

That totally depends on the thermal mass of the agar. How much agar at a time?

I use Pyrex 500 mL media bottles, and my house is usually 72-74* F, when the pressure reaches zero, i pull a bottle out of the PC and it takes roughly 50 minutes to cool until it's ready to pour. So yeah, lots of time! IR thermometer makes it pretty foolproof, pour when the bottle reaches 117-120* F.
