We could all pitch in on some CRISPR tech and gene edit cubes by inserting bioluminescent genes (from whatever - other shrooms, algae, fireflies, jellyfish).
I joke, of course. Don’t know the first thing about gene editing. I mean apart from creating humans from half my genes, anyway.

First time I have ANY activity. Still not sure what is healthy and what is contaminated. If this looks healthy can I add some of the berries to agar?

What in the fudge knuckles is going on in that bag? You can put a grain to agar. What grows on that agar will be dependent on what's growing on the grain and how effective you agar tek is. A better idea is to go to agar before grain.

It was a bag I inoculated before realizing agar is better to start from. Judging by your reaction I should just trash it?

You got gypsum in there? My guess is he’s referring to all the sediment.

I believe it is just rye berries. It came as part of a kit before I discovered the shroomery and realized that kits are fucking stupid.

I use millet quarts for masters. If i only need 4 or 5, ill just combine water/millet and PC. if im making a case, i just dump 10 pounds into the stock pot, rinse, and flip to medium and monitor closely. Its super nice, and make for dummy fast colonization of receivers.
I might be the only one whos experienced this, but my millet jars underwent MASSIVE expansion in the PC. Like, they became more-than-qaurts, rather than the myco-quarts that i measured and put in the PC.

All that sandy and mineral looking shit is likely pelletized gypsum which is what I’m guessing verum was referring to. Looks ok to me so far.

Don't trash it. Just watch it and see what happens. Upload a picture if you see anything strange or just before making any bad decisions and we'll gladly help you. There is just a whole lot of what the fudge up in there. I could've guessed that it was from a kit but didn't want to assume.
There is a big difference between knowing not to spawn dirty grain and trashing grain before you know it's dirty/ what kind of dirty/ how dirty.... Often times you can still case it and fruit right out the dirty bag. This will at least get you some clones and new spores.

I am still trying to learn the subtleties of contaminated and healthy growth. I am just getting into this hobby so I am pretty much clueless. I guess I am surprised that it is taking as long as it has because the agar that I have worked on shows growth (good/bad) in just a few days. Because this is the first growth of any kind in any of the rye berry bags I thought it would be wise to take this opportunity to get some actual mycelium on to some plates. Do you suggest I just leave it as is and continue to watch it?

You said you've already seen growth on agar... do you not already have some myc growing on agar?
Def would not be a good idea to try and transfer myc from that bag to agar... I mean, its a possibility with a lot of transfers to clean up, but as a new grower this wouldn't be the best project to tackle. Even experienced growers wouldn't do this unless it was an absolute last resort. You'd be better off just putting some spores to agar or wait for fruits from your bag to clone

Yes, i suggest you just watch it and report back to us if anything abnormal happens or before you decide on your next move. And, as stated above, go to whatever plates you have and work on getting a clean culture. If you have none, streak some spores and get going.
