Caps' Quick Coir * 2

Caps' Quick Coir
(bucket tek variant)

Again, Just another step in my process, not exactly innovation here, but this is how I do it!I have been prepping 1-4 bricks at a time in a 52qt insulated cooler...

I only use 2qts water for each brick, placed into a pot large enough to hold it, and turn the heat on high... Using a wide chef's knife, I pry the brick(s) into 3 layers horizontally, making it much easier to break up by hand... Breaking up the bricks isn't completely necessary, but helps prevent chunks of dry coir making their ways into your subs, and gives you something to do whilst you wait for water to boil...

Usually the water is at a rapid boil by the time I get the brick(s) busted into pieces no larger than 1/2" ... Turn the heat off, and pour the boiling water over the loosened coir slowly, covering as much of the footprint as possible: this will make for a more even hydration without the need to mix initially... I do like to fluff it once it expands because (with 2-4 bricks especially) the bottom of the mass can become compacted by expansion under the weight of the rest of the pile and either not hydrate evenly, or actually trap moisture underneath, preventing the top from hydrating at all ... Just digging to the bottom down both sides and through the center once should suffice, and allows you to close the cooler quicker; Losing less heat and  "cooking" it a little more effectively... I prep coir 24, 36, and 48 hours in advance, giving it plenty of time to cool before use (12 hours for each brick to be hydrated, upto 48 hrs (good for 3 or 4)) My cooler is just Large enough to prep 4 bricks at once... I like using my gallon pitcher to measure EVERYTHING, so usually prep either 2, or 4 bricks... Lately, I've been mixing coir 1:1 to black kow compost straight from the bag for my SOS's(tek coming), so each brick is good for roughly 2 subs, with a little extra (usually)

I check feild capacity before using, but it's typically on the drier side... I've got a fairly decent grip strength, and when I can squeeze a handful, and see water without losing any, I know it's spot on... Grip strength (like most things) varies from one individual to the next, so take note of yours and it's effect on the coir at this level of hydration... Keep notes as to whether or not you had early shrinkage, needed to mist, pour off pooling, bottom water midflush etc... This will make it much easier to adjust to your climate and such, much faster, for a more "set and forget" experience...

The Idea Behind IT All

I postulate, that excess moisture present initially takes up too much volume within the substrate, and leaves it much more prone to early shrinking. Shrinking prior to pinset development is a major contributor to side and bottom pins, as the slight gap creates the perfect microclimate for pinning. By mixing the coir on the drier side, you reserve this lost volume for additional solid mass, and lose a great deal of potential to shrink. Once shrinking starts to occur, it seems to take a runaway, snowball effect, becoming more and more difficult to rectify, or maintain surface conditions/hydration levels... I find it much easier to hydrate a substrate that's remained a bit too dry, than have been hydrated and dried out; almost as if the coir loses absorbency after wicking dry, but will absorb additional water if spawned drier, and hydrated later (after full colonization) (ONLY) if needed... I've had much more luck avoiding contamination for subsequent flushes going this route as well... Granted, correlation is not necessarily causation, but an interesting observation none the less... I've opted to spawn drier, and administer a bottom water after full colonization/before the final push (last 24-48 hours prior to harvest) ONLY if/when necessary... I've only had 2 tubs of dozens that required additional hydration to carry the pinsets through maturation... Monitoring the color of the coir just below the surface (visually) will help you decipher (with experience) when to hydrate, and when to hold off until after harvest, which I try to do... My goal is to have boxes which require no maintainenance through first flush harvest, and very little to get  decent subsequent flushes...

I also suspect that the presence of excess moisture inhibits growth in a number of ways:
- Waterlogged substrates will have difficulty using oxygen efficiently
-Evaporation, though it occurs, has no/limited effect on the microclimate, and effectively creates nearly anaerobic conditions, which many species of bacteria thrive in... this seeming lack of evaporation often delays pinning, or stalls the culture all together
-Once bacteria is growing, I postulate the culture's immune system response allows easier access for more sinister contaminants, such as our green friend, trichoderma, to gain a foot hold, eventually taking over
-Though a "dry" sub isn't Ideal for cubensis, it IS much more hospitable to cubensis than to bacteria, often times (IME) giving bacterial spawn the edge it needs to triumph through at least one flush... I'd almost bet it's been the only reason some of my jars have made it to fruition, and would recommend it as a starting point, then dialing field capicity up from there... The goal is to maximize hydration without raising risk, or creating less than Ideal conditions for the intended organism's healthy growth

If you just leave your coir alone for a while after you dump the water on, doesn't it wick it's way through, eliminating the need to bust it up?

I hate doing that.

What brand of coir do you use? Not that it really matters, but some People would probably like to know, for consistencies sake. Say one brand consistently sells heavy coir bricks, and the brand your using consistently hydrates perfectly at 2qts of water.

It’s nice to see teks advocating for less than field capacity coir. I’m convinced most of the issues I’ve run into (small fruits, uneven pinset, slow pinning, etc.) are mostly due to poor surface conditions caused by sub that’s too wet. For example, my surface would bead up nicely, but never evaporate no matter how much FAE I was giving it.

I am now a firm believer in sub field capacity. You can always add, but you can’t as easily remove. Thank you for the 2 quarts to 1 brick ratio. I will try for my next project.

How about this then? Ill only quote those questions that are answered in the tek, or with a few keystrokes in the search function... Ain't got time for that shit: I'm here to help, not hold hands

WAS going to pepper them with photos,  but a pic of a measured gallon of water? Wet coir? Nah... I tried to paragraph them so they're not so daunting, but also wanted to be thorough to avoid answering questions that seem common sense piddly shit to me...
It's not imperative to me they stay posted, or that I have the additional responsibility of maintaining the series... don't even really feel my process is revolutionary, or that I've discovered something special... just meeting a growing interest in the way I go about it specifically... The series is meant to be complete, comprehensive, and CLEAR lol... I don't suppose I can think to say everything, in every fashion, so that everyone will interpret it as I intend... sorry guys: just trying to help

Also mentioned in the tek, this is more an issue with 3 and 4 bricks, where the weight of the mass plays a role in the effectiveness of absorption... I said exactly what I meant to say my friend...

Lmmfao... oh WOW!

I'm wanting to try rye, but I'm not paying 4Γ— for it... there's a wholesale grain store somewhere near I've been meaning to check out: really boils down to "tractor supply is on the way" ... IMO, and I've only done oats, WBS,  and millet only, grain has more than enough nutrition present for the culture to run it's course and then some... which you pick is going to matter little to the mushrooms (as long as it's properly prepped)  and more a difference for you in the way of procedure and cost...

Edit: this the coir tek though?

Shrinking subs at fruiting has nothing to do with moisture it's all metabolism, your substrate is being eaten not drank.

Given the fruits exponential like growth, and hydraulic ability to lift a sizable substrate when bottom pinning, I’ve always wondered if there’s an actual compressive force exerted by the mycelium as it draws water at a faster and faster rate.

I can't see the verum's original post, but Shroomery code auto-appends Amazon links with their own affiliate code, often something like "shroomery20" or whatever. I've noticed it in several of my posts where I link shit on Amazon. I noticed another poster's was edited to add what I thought was gr0wer's affiliate code, but realized it's another used by Shroomery (theshro-20, I believe). If there was one attached to verum's, it wasn't his doing.

https://www.amazon.com/Passion-Lubes-Natural-Water-Based-Lubricant/dp/B005MR3IVO/

This is the natural amount of lube I go through as my side gig of Ron Jeremy impersonator (sans belly and hair). I pasted in the bare bones URL and it's appending the tag of linkCode=ll1&tag=theshro-20 at the end without changing the anchor text.

Apologies if that's not what you were referring to.

It'a absolutely just part of Shroomery's monetization of the site. Look at my link, it's a straight Amazon URL. But if you hover over it, you can see their affiliate ID appended to the end of it. They'd be stupid not to do that as so many folks link to Amazon on here.

I wouldn't think so since Amazon's payout % is super low and we actively encourage users to only link paid sponsors. But when it's a simple bit of code that doesn't need to be updated or maintained, they'd be fools not to have it in place. Fools, I tell you, cron!

Amazon's affiliate payout is tiered and you get bumped up based on amount of items shipped. Obviously they're going to make more from paid sponsors and direct advertising, but if I were them, I'd isolate smaller, cheap items that folks are likely to buy and advertise them through certain posts and articles on the site. For example, nearly all of us have pressure cookers, but not backup plugs (or the red ones for AA). Them shits are cheap and tons would buy one if actively encouraged. Lots of little cheap shit like that which are more likely buys than WBS and other shit. Get bumped to the higher tier on smaller items and get that pay bump, baby.

Anyway, enough sidetracking this revolutionary and easy-to-read tek. I want that 7 minute abs update next year, Caps. CAP'S INSANELY FAST COIR!

Now it makes sense why Im prob getting some of the nasty's... When I originally added hot water to my sub i ended up not using it for a few days and thought it could have gotten contam in it, so I heated up a little more water and threw it back in to kill whatever I thought could have been in there.  I guess hand squeezing everything out and transfering to the new tub prob wasnt a good way to measure field capacity lol

So Im like 11 days in from mixing my substrate with the spawn and its just been beaded water over all the growth the whole time. Every day I try to open the lid and turn it sideways and breathe for a few hours but it doesnt ever dry up the beads... is there a way to remove the excess moisture safely?

PS: Sorry for threadjacking.

Moisture levels don't aid in bacterial problems bacteria will grow just fine on something damp, wanna test that?
Swipe some bacteria onto some stiff agar see how much of a difference it makes.
I fucking wish the answer to less contams was that simple though lol.
Simple facts are clean spawn is truly key, decades have shown that field capacity is not a vector, subs shrink because of metabolism not water loss and sidepins are a personal problem.

Right, but that process results in water being pumped from the sub into the mushrooms, resulting in sub shrinkage, right? The opposite of "loss" like evaporation or something, but essentially spent elsewhere than the sub.

If it's not evaporating it is. It's ok to have water on the sub, but you want it to evaporate too. I would say you need to increase FAE a bit.

When u dunk your sub after the first flush
Back to field capacity does your sub magically grow back to size and those gaps go away?
I didn't think so, yes a bit of shrinking is due to water but it's mostly metabolism

So are you saying its not an issue to have excessive moisture in my tub like I do? I would have thought I would have seen pinning by now?

If it's not evaporating it is. It's ok to have water on the sub, but you want it to evaporate too. I would say you need to increase FAE a bit.

How should I do that? Just leave the lid off completely for a few hours? Right now I have it sitting sideways on the tub...  Or should I get a fan and start blowing it on it with the lid completely off?

Don't use a fan....just flip the lid or leave it crack all the time. As long as you got some air flow it'll be fine.

Ok, so in my tub I have both sides drilled with holes, no misting and it STILL has all this moisture...

Im gonna prob try to leave the top on sideways indefinitely till I see the water removed.

I postulate that excess water content will contribute to shrinkage upon evaporation from simple volume displacement... Undoubtedly the culture is feeding on the substrate, but wetter subs shrink too much too fast for me to bite it having NOTHING to do with it...

you can tilt the tub and drain off excess moisture, or even use a paper towel to lightly soak it up.. I'm not real sure what contraption you've got there... Seems like a bulk sub in a SGFC half taped back?

As far as bacteria, I don't think excess moisture CAUSES it, but rather gives it the more favorable conditions to cubensis, providing it with the foothold it needs to allow other contaminants to move in... I'm basing this purely on personal observation, and my eyes are shit so forgive me... just seems fair to state that bacteria will thrive easier and easier the more moisture is present, no?

I'm just looking for a deeper understanding, and clarification for the rest of us lol

ya those holes were drilled all the way around the tub... then found out its prob too much so I taped 2 long sides up, and left the 2 short sides drilled for some breathing room but still doesnt seem to be working. I was thinking of tilting and soaking up with paper towel but :

1. will the paper towel contaminate the substrate? Like, its not sterile right?
2. if I tilt will the water thats touching the yellow shit in the corner spread to the rest of the tub? or does bacteria travel through the myc only and not really through water?

Depends on how you define excess Lol, field capacity is not more favorable to bacteria then to cubensis, the line is drawn at the point where the sub starts to compact and cubes have a harder time colonizing the substrate, after colonization we can take that line further then field capacity as we have seen simply by dunking our subs after a flush in which you would imagine that beyond field capacity though I have never weighed a substrate at this point.
But to go with your point yes wetter conditions can and often will be great for bacteria but how often do we see bacteria as a problem or threat in a bulk sub unless it came from the spawn?
Nice work though caps keep it up

Absolutely, and let the record show that I 100% believe that any loss prior to first flush harvest originates with less than ideal spawn... If the spawn is clean, and the culture is otherwise healthy/strong (good genetics) it's really rather difficult not to get SOME fruit... Conditions management and prep will determine to what degree your success will be, and whether or not subsequent flushes will occur

Gotta say, this made my day, and it's only 3:33 am ...(HERE AGAIN... Seems to be a trend) BUT, also presents an expectation I intend on taking seriously sir: I HIGHLY appreciate your input! :jah:

Maybe my initial interpretation of "field capacity" was WAYYY off, and my grip strength is nowhere what I believe it to be?

OH SHIT!

I didn't think so, yes a bit of shrinking is due to water but it's mostly metabolism

Interesting. I believe it. I can see BRF cakes with a gap between the glass and sub and I don't hydrate them bitches to FC before jarring.

It's not helpful to rehash an already well understood and nearly idiot-proof part of our hobby in a less clear and informative way than earlier Teks. A new poster is worse off selecting this as their intro to coir prep than any of the other known versions.

At what point did breaking apart a brick of coir and throwing water on it become this huge bottleneck people need help with? And who voted that you be our savior to help and not hold our hands? Drop the condescending attitude, Caps.

This is not you being helpful or selfless at all. It's you ego stroking again and forcing in pointless additions to known techniques to justify your own write-up. Someone truly selfless and helpful doesn't have to constantly talk about how they're helping. They just help.

Being honest, this a rambling eyesore of a "Tek" that sounds like you blathered into voice-to-text in a one-take and called it good. If you're not even introducing something interesting or unique or new, the least you could do is make it painless to digest and not be a cock to your equals that you repeatedly treat as beneath you.

Right, but that process results in water being pumped from the sub into the mushrooms, resulting in sub shrinkage, right? The opposite of "loss" like evaporation or something, but essentially spent elsewhere than the sub.

Somewhere in my confession thread there is a dude who confessed that he used his Dad's seafood steamer to pasturize his horse shit and then only gave it a rinse before putting it back in the garage. The next time he saw it his Dad was eating some steamed crab out of it and commenting on the strange grassy taste...
:cannotunsee:

Dude... it was you mushboy. Although now I see you mentioning it, maybe I did not recall it exactly right:
